• Social change. Facebook now has accounts in the UK for over half the population

• Sexualisation of children - soft porn is available on national tv before 9pm watershed (X Factor final 2010)

• It is now commonplace for young women to have no pubic hair (Gynaecologists can tell the age of a woman by this)

• Desensitisation is leading to harder and more extreme pornography. Where will it end?

To differentiate their products in a glutted market producers have created profitable niche products such as “Teen sex”, “Torture porn” “Gonzo” in order to entice a generation of desensitised users.

The impact of the internet on society

Computer & People Support Ltd

• Many adults think of computer technology as a useful tool for shopping, banking and email

• Children need the internet to do their homework

• Computer skills are understood to be very important in today’s world of online applications for University and jobs so children are encouraged to use computers in the home

• The internet has great benefits for business in terms of efficiency (Race Online2012) – massive savings in administration would result if all UK adults had email and could fill in online forms.

Would a programme of government provision of computers to early secondary school students reduce educational disparities between rich and poor?

It didn’t in North Carolina according to the survey of secondary school children between 2000 and 2005

We’re all better off when everyone’s online, aren’t we?

Over half a million student/year observationsA link to the full report is on www.candp-s.com/familysafety

Overall conclusion of North Carolina research

•Modest (but statistically significant) negative impact on student test scores

•Universal access to home computers and internet access widens achievement gaps between rich and poor

In poorer families home computer use was associated with:

•The displacement of social activities and attendant loneliness and depression

•Exposure to inappropriate violent, sexual or commercial content

•Physical problems including increased obesity and injury to the eyes, back and wrist

“Given the evidence of negative impacts of computer technology access and use on achievement, school administrators and parents may benefit more clearly from policies and initiatives designed to inhibit unproductive uses.

Promoting the productive uses of computers may in itself be counterproductive, as students with more excuses to use the computer may have greater difficulty in avoiding the unproductive uses.”

We’re all better off so long as parents do a good job

A brief history lesson about smoking - with a short video before the break

Two year old chain-smoking in Indonesiawww.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6636857n

The Indonesian government does not educate the public on the dangers of smoking and allows tobacco companies to engage in marketing activities that have been banned elsewhere for years

Non-technical approach

•Become well-informed and take an active part in your children's online activities. Just sit and talk. Watch YouTube videos together

•Discuss the dangers of giving out personal information. Sign the “Safe Internet Use Agreement”

•Keep computer/s in family room and make sure it won’t give your child bad posture!

•Keep smart phones and laptops out of bedrooms at night or simply turn off modem router

•Monitor screen time, limit use of PS3/XBox360/Wii

1. I will only go on the internet at the agreed times.

2. I will not pretend to be doing my homework when really I am doing fun things on the internet. I will tell my parents my internet password but will not give it out to anyone else (even my best friends).

3. I will never give my personal information (or anyone else's) out to anyone on the internet without getting approval from my parents first. This includes not sending photographs.
