The process of assuring that a color on
one medium remains the same
when converted to another medium. Thisis extremely difficult because different
media use different color models.
Color monitors, for example, use the RGB
model, whereas process printing usesthe CMYK( cyan, magenta, yellow, and
black) model.

A spectrophotometer is an instrument
used to measure properties of light over
a specific portion of the electromagneticspectrum, typically used in spectroscopic
analysis to identify materials.

Designed to transmit lights of narrowwavelength It does not absorb lights of all
wavelength (thats why things are ofdifferent color)
So since different compound absorbslight at different wavelength ,it can beused to distinguish compounds byanalyzing the pattern of wavelengthabsorbed by given sample.

Reflected color can be measured using
a spectrophotometerwhich takes
measurements in the visible region (anda little beyond) of a given color sample.
If the custom of taking readings at
10 nanometer increments is followed,
the visible light range of 400-700 nm willyield 31 readings.

These readings are typically used to draw the sample's spectral
reflectance curve (how much it reflects, as a function of
wavelength)the most accurate data that can be provided
regarding its characteristics.

Spectrophotometers use an opticalmechanism to break down light enteringthe instrument into it's component parts
and measuring them in an objectivemanner. To do this, light is first collected from the
external target that the user is attemptingto measure. This light is then passedthrough a set of optics that focus andproject it onto a diffraction grating.

This grating works like a prism and deflectslight of different wavelengths at different
angles. As such, the resulting pattern can beprojected onto a set of sensor that canmeasure the light at specific intervals. Aseach sensor can measure the quantity oflight in a specific area of the spectrum, this
allows the instrument to relay the exactcomponents of the light being measured tothe computer.

This process is repeated for a set of differently
colored patches and the data from each
measurement is stored.
The profiling software can then compare thecolors that the patches were supposed to be with
the colors that were actually measured.
This data is then used by the computer to
generate a color profile that can counteract themistakes produced by the display device.

The Pantone Color Matching System is
largely a standardized color reproduction
system .By standardizing the colors, different manufacturers in different
locations can all refer to the Pantone
system to make sure colors match without
direct contact with one another.

One such use is standardizing colors in
the CMYK process. The CMYK process is
a method of printing color by using fourinkscyan, magenta, yellow, and black. A
majority of the world's printed material is
produced using the CMYK process,
The Pantone system also allows for many'special' colors to be produced such as
metallic's and fluorescents

Pantone offers chip books thathelp designers see how colorslook on coated, uncoated, andmatte stock.
PANTONE Colors aredistinguished by numbers anda suffix. While the numberindicates the PANTONE Coloritself, and is standard across alltypes of stock, the suffix
indicates the media or stock, which affects how the ink isformulated to achieve thespecific color.

Computer Color Matching System (CCMS) hasgreat advantages in Textile Industry.
For Example:
Customers get the exact shade. Customers often have a choice of 10-20
formulation that will match color. By taking
costing, availability of dyes, and auxiliaries into
account, one can choose a best swatch. 3 to 300 times faster than manual color matching
system.
Limited range of stock color needed.

As color desktop publishing matures,
color matching is gaining more and more
attention. The most recent Windowsand Macintosh operating systems
include a color management system
(CMS) to assist in color matching.
