that we no longer believe in hell , and that mutes , carrying black ostrich plumes , are out of favour . The changes have been more fundamental and some of them may have affected us in ways that we do not immediately recognise . All centuries , of course , have been centuries of change ; but few would deny that in the nineteenth century <m>change was greatly accelerated ; that much was apparent to the more perceptive of those living at that time . Some felt that they were <m>hurrying into an epoch of unprecedented enlightenment , in which better education and beneficent technology would ensure wealth and leisure for all . This was Herbert Spencer 's view , namely that an <m>upward evolutionary process was inherent in the human condition . To others , including Tennyson and Arnold , it seemed as if ‘ <m>the ringing grooves of change ’ were carrying them at <m>break-neck speed into a <m>future full of uncertainty and alarm . Browning was more hopeful , but he , too , was impressed by the transiency of the <m>world , flashing past the carriage windows : ‘ Must the rose sigh ‘ Pluck — I perish ! ’ Must the eve weep ‘ Gaze — I fade ! ’ ’ The Impressionist painters <m>caught the contagion , and <m>the new race of photographers tried to <m>seize the fleeting moment and <m>make it stay . Cultures and historical periods differ greatly in their concepts of time and the continuity of life . We live in a <m>century imprinted on the present , which regards the <m> past as little more than the springboard from which we <m>were launched on our way . Ours , for better or for worse , is the century of youth . Earlier centuries , in contrast , had an appreciation of the past that embodied more than nostalgia or antiquarian interest . Age and experience were valued in the belief that <m>length of days had provided some guidance on how to live and what to expect in the life to come . For the <m> life on earth of each individual was not a finite entity , complete in itself , but <m> a transition to another <m>mode of existence ; <m> the gateway to that unknown land was death — Mors Janna Vitae , as the memorial tablets had it . This belief was fostered by the churches , the floors and walls of which were incised with the records of those who had gone before , but it was expressed positively in the family . Families cherished their forbears , whether these had lived in humble cottages or in manor houses . Sons aspired <m>to follow in their fathers ' trades or professions . The landed gentry <m> planted for their grandchildren avenues of hardwood that they themselves would never see . In the nineteenth century this leisurely <m> view of the <m>pageant of time began to speed up . <m>People became more mobile , both physically and socially ; <m> men wished to rise in the world . Young <m> men with feet on the ladder , provided by the Industrial Revolution , <m> looked askance at the old-fashioned ways of their fathers . Growing more acquisitive in the present , they prepared to <m>disown the past ; the future was to be different , both for themselves and their children , and they had to <m>run to catch up with it . Improving life expectancy gave them every hope of doing so , especially if they belonged to the <m>rising middle-class . For the middle-class was both the agent and product of these changes . <m>The rise of the middle-class was not , on the whole , predicated on an aspiration to join the aristocracy , whose way of life , especially during the Regency , <m>met with a good deal of disapprobation ; but it was determined by the resolute intention of the new men to <m>distance themselves in every possible way from the working-class , out of which so <m>many of them had raised themselves . Their rise during the Industrial Revolution was expressed in capital accumulation ; the status of the aristocracy still derived from birth and ownership of land . The new men were not aping the landed gentry ; they were <m>basing their careers upon the infrastructure provided by urban Britain . There was no coherent <m>ideology embracing the entire middle-class , but there were two ideologies that subsumed its more active sectors . The older one was that of the Evangelicals and Dissenters , of whom more will be written in chapter three . The newer ideology was that of the followers of Jeremy Bentham ( 1745–1832 ) , the so-called Utilitarians ; it was far from <m> sharing a common world view with the Evangelicals , but there were certain social issues , such as abolition of slavery , on which concerted action was possible . Metaphor and polysemyMetaphor plays a role in language evolution:

Metaphors begin their lives as novel poetic creations withmarked rhetorical effects, whose comprehension requires aspecial imaginative leap. As time goes by, they become apart of general usage, their comprehension becomes moreautomatic, and their rhetorical effect is dulled. (J. Nunberg)

Abstract

Complete natural language understanding requires identify-ing and analyzing the meanings of metaphors, which areubiquitous in text and speech. Underlying metaphors in lan-guage are conceptual metaphors, partial semantic mappingsbetween disparate conceptual domains. Though some goodresults have been achieved in identifying linguistic metaphorsover the last decade, little work has been done to date on au-tomatically identifying conceptual metaphors. This paper de-scribes research on identifying conceptual metaphors basedon corpus data. Our method uses as little background knowl-edge as possible, to ease transfer to new languages and tominimize any bias introduced by the knowledge base con-struction process. The method relies on general heuristicsfor identifying linguistic metaphors and statistical cluster-ing (guided by Wordnet) to form conceptual metaphor candi-dates. Human experiments show the system effectively findsmeaningful conceptual metaphors.

IntroductionMetaphor is ubiquitous in human language, and so iden-tifying and understanding metaphorical language is a keyfactor in understanding natural language text. Metaphori-cal expressions in language, so-called linguistic metaphors,are derived from and justified by underlying conceptualmetaphors (Lakoff and Johnson 1980), which are cognitivestructures that map aspects of one conceptual domain (thesource concept) to another, more abstract, domain (the targetconcept). A large and varied scientific literature has grownover the last few decades studying linguistic and concep-tual metaphors, in fields including linguistics (e.g., (John-son, Lakoff, and others 2002; Boers 2003)), psychology(e.g., (Gibbs Jr 1992; Allbritton, McKoon, and Gerrig 1995;Wickman et al. 1999)), cognitive science (e.g., (Rohrer2007; Thibodeau and Boroditsky 2011)), literary studies(e.g., (Goguen and Harrell 2010; Freeman 2003)), and more.

In this paper, we describe a novel system for discoveringconceptual metaphors using natural language corpus data.The system identifies linguistic metaphors and uses them tofind meaningful conceptual metaphors. A key principle isto rely as little as possible on domain and language specific

knowledge bases or ontologies, but rather more on analyz-ing statistical patterns of language use. We limit such use togeneric lexical semantics resources such as Wordnet. Such aknowledge-limited, corpus-centric approach promises to bemore cost effective in transferring to new domains and lan-guages, and to potentially perform better when the underly-ing conceptual space is not easily known in advance, as, e.g.,in the study of metaphor variation over time or in differentcultures.

The system works at three interrelated levels of metaphoranalysis (Figure 1): (i) linguistic metaphors (individualmetaphoric expressions), (ii) nominal analogies (analogi-cal mappings between specific nouns), and (iii) conceptualmetaphors (mappings between concepts). For instance, thesystem, when given a text, might recognize the expression‘open government’ as a linguistic metaphor. The system maythen find the nominal analogy “government � door” basedon that linguistic metaphor and others. Finally, by clusteringthis and other nominal analogies found in the data, the sys-tem may discover an underlying conceptual metaphor: “AnORGANIZATION is a CONNECTION”.

Related WorkThere has been a fair bit of work on identifying linguis-tic metaphors, but considerably less on finding conceptualmetaphors. Most such work relies strongly on predefined se-mantic and domain knowledge. We give a short summary ofthe most relevant previous work in this area.

Birke and Sarkar (2006) approach the problem as a clas-sical word sense disambiguation (WSD) task. They reduce

metaphorical usage cannot exist for one sense only. Then,the algorithm verifies that the noun N belongs to at leastone high-level semantic category (using the WordStat dic-tionary of semantic categories based on Wordnet1). If not,the algorithm cannot make a decision and stops. Otherwise,it identifies the n nouns most frequently collocated with A,and chooses the k most concrete nouns (using the abstract-ness scale of (Turney et al. 2011)). The high-level semanticcategories represented in this list by at least i nouns eachare selected; if N does not belong to the any of them, thephrase is labeled as metaphorical, otherwise it is labeled asnon-metaphorical.

Based on exploratory analysis of a development dataset,separate from our test set, we set n = 1000; k = 100; andi = 16.

Nominal AnalogiesOnce a set of metaphorical expressions SM = {�f, nt�}(each a pair of a facet and a target noun) is identified, weseek nominal analogies which relate two specific nouns, asource and a target. For example, if the system finds manydifferent linguistic metaphors which can be interpreted asviewing governments as doors, we may have the nominalanalogy “government � door.”

The basic idea behind the nominal analogy finding al-gorithm is that, since the metaphorical facets of a targetnoun are to be understood in reference to the source noun,we must find source/target pairs such that many of themetaphorical facets of the target are associated in literalsenses with the source (see Figure 3). The stronger and morenumerous these associations, the more likely the nominalanalogy is to be real.

It should be noted that the system will not only find fre-quent associations. Since the association strength of eachfacet-noun pairing is measured by PMI, not its raw fre-quency, infrequent pairings can (and do) pop up as signif-icant.

Candidate generation. We first find a set SC of nouns ascandidate source terms for nominal analogies. This set is theset of all nouns (in a given corpus) which have strong non-metaphoric associations with facets (adjectives or verbs) thatare used in the linguistic metaphors in SM . We start withthe set of all facets used in the linguistic metaphors in SM

which have a positive point-wise mutual information (PMI;cf. (Pantel and Lin 2002)) with some target term in the set.We then define the set SC to consist of all other (non-target)nouns (in a given large corpus) associated with each of thosefacets (in the appropriate syntactic relationships) with a pos-itive PMI. A higher threshold than 0 can also be set, thoughwe haven’t seen that increase precision, and it may reducerecall.

For example, consider finding candidate source terms forthe target term “government.” We first find all facets in lin-guistic metaphors identified by the system that are associ-ated with “government” with a positive PMI. These includesuch terms as “better”, “big”, “small”, “divided”, “open”,

“closed”, and “limited.” Each of these facets also are asso-ciated with other nouns in non-metaphorical senses. For in-stance, the terms “open” and “closed” are associated withthe words “door”, “table”, “sky”, “arms”, and “house”.

Identification. To identify which pairs of candidate sourceterms in SC and target terms are likely nominal analo-gies, we seek a measurement of the similarity of the non-metaphorical facets of each candidate with the metaphoricalfacets of each target.

To begin, we define for each facet fi and noun (source ortarget) ni the pair’s association score aij as its PMI, and thepair’s metaphoricity score, mij where mij = 1 if the pairis judged by the system to be metaphorical and mij = 0 ifit is judged to be non-metaphorical. In our current system,all metaphoricity scores are either 1 or 0, but (as describedbelow) we plan to generalize the scheme to allow differentlevels of confidence in linguistic metaphor classification.

We then define the a metaphoric facet distribution (MFT)for facets given target terms by normalizing the product ofassociation and metaphoricity scores:
