Our summer exhibition Turner and Constable: Sketching from Nature and its contemporary complement, Re-Viewing the Landscape, will give you an exciting and surprising new perspective on how leading British artists of both the Regency and of today portrayed Nature.

To gain a further insight into Nature, come and see the colourful new planting in the Grounds and inhabit artist Hilary Jack’s marvellous giant Empty Nest.

We have also expanded the Nature in our Grounds, with some beehives and bees. We’ve installed two hives which we intend to establish during 2013, along with a number of wildflowers throughout an adjacent lawn.

You can keep up to date on Grounds development by following our Head of Garden and Landscapes’ blog on our newly launched Grounds pages of our website.

On top of all this, there’s our award-winning café run by Aubrey Allen – who were recently awarded the Royal Warrant – and the exciting new ranges in our fabulous shop. So please do come and see us very soon, and experience Nature at first hand.

Works from the Tate Collection

Re-Viewing the Landscape: A Contemporary Response

Compton Verney will premiere this major exhibition which includes approximately 60 works by Turner, Constable and their contemporaries, including John Sell Cotman, John Linnell and Francis Danby. These works from the Tate collections provide a unique exploration of the art of oil sketching in the landscape rather than in the studio, which became fashionable in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

This is a rare opportunity to see extraordinary works that have not been seen together before.


This exhibition provides a contemporary response to depicting and exploring landscape. It brings together works by six diverse contemporary artists: Simon Faithfull, Julian Opie, Jo Roberts, Paul Ryan, George Shaw and Sarah Woodfine. These artists have used a variety of media – from traditional sketchbooks to digital animation – to explore the landscape around them.

Simon Faithfull, Jo Roberts and Paul Ryan have created new work for this exhibition. Jo Roberts is also our artist inresidence throughout the summer (see page 13 for details).

Work from the Tate Collection

The landscape oil sketch first appeared in British art in the 1770s and

flourished during the first two decades of the nineteenth century, pioneered

by J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. By the 1810s, the widespread habit of

painting in oil and watercolour from nature had led some British landscape

painters to aspire to create a direct naturalism of a kind unprecedented in

the history of British art, though by the 1820s the practice of taking oil paints

into the countryside had effectively disappeared. This book explores the

development, variety and innovation of this important phenomenon.

Taking oil paints into the countryside was something very new for

British art. So were the ways in which Regency artists pursued this type

of study. These departures are explored in detail here by art historians

Michael Rosenthal and Anne Lyles, alongside full-colour illustrations

of ninety oil sketches from Tate’s substantial collection.

This redisplay takes its inspiration from the colour and design of Marx’s work, making these galleries bright, vibrant and engaging. You will see Marx’s dynamic designs and discover why she is one of the foremost designers of twentieth-century Britain.

Marx was a contemporary of Eric Ravilious (1903-42) and Edward Bawden (1903-89) at the Design School of London’s Royal College of Art. During her career she was a textile designer, a printmaker, a book designer and author and illustrator of children’s books. She is well-known for her striking geometric designs and her upholstery for the London Underground.

The redisplay also includes Marco’s Design Cabinet where you can discover how Enid Marx found inspiration for her work in the objects that she collected. Open up the cabinet and explore our pattern boxes with unique wooden blocks inside.

Summer in the grounds

In the woods, a giant bird’s nest sits in a cedar tree. Empty Nest, an artwork by artist Hilary Jack, allows visitors to find a hidden, secret place which refers to themes of abandonment, migration and the families who once inhabited Compton Verney.

Climb the staircase around the tree; once inside take in the bird’s eye view of the surrounding grounds, trees and wildlife.

Artist-in-residence Jo Roberts: The Contemporary Surveyor of Compton Verney Creative Walks

Every Tuesday and Sunday 30 July – 1 September, 11.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm

Artist in residence Jo Roberts will be on site to take visitors on a creative walk around the ‘Capability’ Brown landscape, focusing on viewpoints which direct the eye towards the gallery and show off the idealistic features of the grounds.

JMW Turner pioneered the use of light and colour theory in painting. Use his knowledge to create your own colour, then give it a name and add it to our colour chart. Experiment with complementary colours and use them in our giant painting.

A full weekend of activity and craft for everyone to enjoy. Meet the Mannered Mob who will show you how to dance, play music and entertain in the Adam Hall. Make a tricorn hat or a mask to wear at a Ball.

Work with artist Michala Gytevai and let the Compton Verney landscape inspire you to experiment with your sketch books. Through careful observation of colours, forms and patterns you will develop a personal response to the environment around you. All materials will be provided.

Join Dr Steven Parissien and Professor Michael Rosenthal, curators of our Turner and Constable exhibition, to explore how British artists’ featured in the exhibition used oil paint in the open air from the 1780s onwards.

Dr Nicholas Alfrey, University of Nottingham, is the co-curator of the current exhibition Uncommon Ground: Land art in Britain organised with Haywood Touring. This talk will explore some of the ways in which the art of landscape came to be renewed from an unexpected quarter, and how traditional landscape itself began to appear in a new light.

Dr Martin Postle of Yale University, an internationally-renowned expert on the work of Sir Joshua Reynolds, examines the context and significance of one of Compton Verney’s best-loved portraits, Reynolds’ Mrs Baldwin in Eastern Dress.

This touring exhibition will explore our enduring curiosity about the animal world through the beautiful and bizarre imagery found in the rich print collections of the British Museum. The exhibition features artists including Albrecht Dürer, Francisco de Goya and George Stubbs.

Printmaker’s Studio

Leicester Print Workshop, the Midlands centre for printmaking, is creating a special resource area to accompany our autumn exhibitions. Artist-in-residence Kate Da’Casto will demonstrate printmaking processes and create new work in response to the exhibitions.

Fantastical Animal Alphabet Sat 5 October – Sun 15 December

Presenting an imaginative A-Z of new commissioned prints by artists from Leicester Print Workshop on the theme of fantastical creatures. These will be presented alongside wonderful examples of Marco’s Animal Alphabet by Enid Marx.

Children are welcome and choose from our childrens menu or child size portions from the main menu. Baby highchairs are available.
