Comprehensive MRO Toxicology Testing and a Physician’s Role in the Detection, Prevention and Treatment of Substance AbuseTesting for substances of abuse, both alcohol and drugs, is now the rule rather than the exception in set-

tings as diverse as the workplace, the doctor’s office, and the school your child attends. More than 20 mil-

lion forensic drug test specimens are processed by certified laboratories every year, and the results of these

laboratory tests are reviewed and interpreted by more than 6,000 physicians acting as MROs. Drug testing is

not only a tool in the doctor’s bag for addiction medicine specialists; this tool should also be in the bag of

every physician involved in direct patient care. Proper interpretation of drug test results can help knowl-

edgeable physicians diagnose, treat, and monitor the recovery of their patients. This course provides the

basis for the understanding and interpretation of the tool of drug testing. Whether a physician is certified in

addiction medicine or in another medical specialty there is no more important and potentially life changing

role a physician can play than the properly performed role of an MRO.

MRO is a complex and rapidly evolving area thanks to technical advances, regulatory changes, new patterns

of abuse, and the huge bank of knowledge gained from past years of experience. Staying up-to-date is a

basic requirement for MROs as it is for

all physicians. Additionally, federal regu-

lations require MRO qualification and re-

qualification training followed by

certification and re-certification by a na-

tionally recognized MRO Certification

board every 5 years. ASAM’s Compre-

hensive MRO Course works in tandem

with the Medical Review Officer Certifi-

cation Council (MROCC) to offer MROCC

Certification and Re-certification Exami-

nations. This assists physicians already

involved in MRO practice as well as those new to the field to maintain the highest standards of knowledge,

practice, certification, and compliance. For the convenience of course participants, ASAM and MROCC have

coordinated their schedules to offer consecutive training and examination at selected locations.

MROCC Examination held in conjunction with ASAM Courses:

NOTE: There is a separate application and fee for the MROcertification. Certification must be obtained through theMROCC office. For eligibility requirements and to registerfor the exam, please contact MROCC at 847-631-0599.MROCC reserves the right to cancel based on enrollment.Their web site address is www.mrocc.org.
