How to use your new ComposT-Twin

Fill the first drum with your mix of organicleftovers and yard scraps. For the fastest composting, fill the chamber at least 2/3 full.See the next section for more information ongetting the right mix of materials.

Once a day, turn the handle to rotate theComposT-Twin barrel about five times. Whenthe tumbler mixes and aerates your material,it builds up a heat core for fast decomposi-tion.

You can use a thermometer (item #201101*)and a moisture meter (item #201103*) tocheck how your batch is “cooking”!

* available directly from Mantis

If you want to, add compost activator(item #201100*) to speed up the decomposi-tion process. Close the door, and do not disturb this chamber. When you have morethrowouts to compost, just begin filling thesecond drum.

Keeping the right ratio of carbon to nitrogenis an important factor in successful compost-ing. Ideally, the mix should be:

30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen

A 30:1 mixture breaks down fast (“hot” compost); a different ratio may take severalmonths to finish (“slow” composting).

Shredding or breaking up coarse materialswill also speed up decomposition. Use any of the materials on the following page forcomposting, just be sure to maintain theproper C/N ratio.

In several weeks (depending on the mix, moisture content and temperature) youshould be able to use your first batch of compost. Be sure to remove the door beforeturning the barrel and emptying the compostchamber.

Now, you can use this chamber for your dailyscraps and let the second chamber finish theprocess of decomposition.

Carbon

Carbon-rich materials aregenerally brown or yellowand dry. These include:

Fallen leavesDried plant prunings likespent annuals and perennialsWood ashesStraw or hayShredded black & white paperWood shavingsSawdust

Nitrogen

High-nitrogen “green” materials are also essential;without them, your compostwon’t heat up. Nitrogenenables the micro-organismsto break down the carbonmaterials. For nitrogen, use:

Fresh leafy prunings fromflowers, hedges and shrubsOver-ripe fruit and vegetablesFresh grass clippingsSalad scraps from the kitchenCoffee grounds & tea bagsEgg shells (rinsed & crushed)Hair trimmingsFresh farm animal manure

Do not add

Charcoal or coal ashMeat or dairy-related materi-als or shorteningsBones, fat or meatPet droppingsPesticide-treated plants andgrass clippingsPressure-treated wood scrapsand sawdustPoison sumac and poison ivyGrain-derived foods

Using your compost

No gardener ever suffered from having a surplus of compost. Well-finished compostcan be used at any time, in any season, andin any amount. Here are a few ways you’llenjoy a never-ending supply of compost:

Dig it into the top 4” of vegetable and flowerbeds in spring. This will establish a goodhumus level and mineral balance in your soiland provide the nutrients that your plantsneed. Later, in mid-season, mix compost withsoil as a side dressing along vegetable rows oralong flower plants.

In established plantings of perennials, whereyou want to condition the soil and increasefertility without uprooting the plants, workcompost liberally into the top 4” of soil.

Compost also makes a fine mulch. In spring, spread a 3” to 4” layer around trees, shrubs, perennials, fruit trees and berries. The mulchwill prevent soil moisture from evaporating, suppress weeds, and supply nutrients andhumus as it slowly works into the soil.

Lawns also benefit from compost. With aMantis Tiller, work 1” or more of compostinto the soil before seeding a new lawn (orbefore repairing a patch of old lawn). To helpsoil organisms thrive, you can top-dress anestablished lawn with up to 1/2” of compost. If you are using a spreader, be sure to screenthe compost first.

Screened compost also makes an excellentpotting soil for houseplants as well as pottedpatio plants. Mix one part compost to threeparts rich soil, and top-dress with an inch ofcompost. When you water the container, thenutrients will be carried down into the soilfrom the top-dressing.

Once you start making compost, your garden will thrive as never before!

Poor aeration

Solution

Remove and discard any impropermaterials (meats, dairy, etc.)

Turn materials, mixing in dry leaves, strawor wood chips. Check the breather caps inthe doors for proper drainage.

Not all insects in a compost pile are“pests”; the compost ecosystem includesa host of helpful invertebrates, includingmillipedes, centipedes, worms, ants - evensnails and slugs, among others.

Make sure food materials are thoroughlymixed in. Hot piles will destroy or determost insects, such as grubs and other larvae (maggots). Moisten pile ifnecessary; moist piles deter bees andwasps. Wood chips and woody materialstaken from rotted wood piles or municipalmulch piles may contain termites and/or carpenter ants.

Add grass, manure, kitchen scraps, orother natural nitrogen sources.

Add water, turn chamber, and check moisture level until pile is moist, but notwet; should feel like a sponge throughout.

Start turning and mixing materials moreoften.

Hot piles need lots of fresh oxygen; turnmaterials as pile starts to cool down. Itmight be necessary to add an additionalnitrogen source periodically.

Sometimes things go wrong - even with composting. Most composting problems stem from alack of moisture, too much moisture, a nitrogen imbalance, or poorly managed food scraps.Fortunately, all of these problems have a fairly simple solution. Below you will find a numberof commonly encountered symptoms, their causes and their cures.
