IntroductionIntroductionIntroductionIntroduction

The cards, both decks, had taught him (Marvin) that everything was part of the great go round, the flow of energy that cycled and circled,

taking different forms- money merely one of them. When you were attuned to the flow, then you knew your part in it:

when to receive, and when to give away. It is more blessed to give than it is to receive.

His grandmother, like everybody else’s, had tried to teach him that. But it wasn’t so;

the only thing that mattered was not blocking the flow.

--- Return of the Goddess: A Divine Comedy, by Elizabeth Cunningham

Thank you so much for purchasing Completely Random, Completely Divine: Doing Readings With Your SoulCollage® Deck. This is a topic that is near and dear to my heart because SoulCollage Readings allow me to tap into my own inner wisdom in a way that nothing else ever has. I have seen my own life move in new directions, and I have seen beautiful transformations happen in others’ lives as well, simply by asking questions of the cards and then allowing the answers to arise from our decks and into our consciousness. I love the above paragraph from Elizabeth Cunningham’s achingly wise and wonderful novel (Return of the Goddess) of growth and healing. Marvin is a high school dropout, a nomad of sorts, and a very gifted Tarot reader. He has two special decks that he carries with him everywhere he goes. As we read this book further, we discover that he is gifted at reading the Tarot cards because he possesses something more important than education and left-brained intelligence: a keen and brilliant intuition. Marvin is deeply in touch with his inner world, and he is acutely tuned in to others as well. This is exactly all that you need in order to start reading your SoulCollage deck: a sparkling desire to deepen your own intuition, and to access your wonderful, already-present inner wisdom. The more you practice reading your deck, the more your own intuition will intensify and expand, and the more meaning your Readings will take on.

The beauty of SoulCollage Readings is that you are given the opportunity to access your own inner truth in a very visceral way. I have long believed that the answers to all of our questions already lie within us. Doing SoulCollage Readings is a simple yet profound way for us to access these answers. On the outside, the cards we choose may seem completely random. But our souls know that this is not a random process… there is Divine wisdom flowing around us at all times and it flows through our SoulCollage cards and touches our souls as we do these Readings. So let’s begin. This e-book is designed to be read in any order. Look at the Table of Contents and decide where you want to begin. Then jump right in. There’s no “right way,” only your way… and the best guideline I can give you is to…

TRUST THE PROCESS! If you do, you will be more empowered to access the flow of divine wisdom as it circles around and through you in each moment.

Wishing you peace and joy on your SoulCollage journey, Anne Marie Bennett Beverly, MA April 2007

An important part of this e-book is the Tele-Playshop recording: Completely Random, Completely Divine, facilitated by SoulCollage Facilitators Anne Marie Bennett (Massachusetts, USA) and Karen Mann (Melbourne, Australia). The recording is 65 minutes long and features experienced facilitators sharing SoulCollage® Readings they have done in the past, as well as several other SoulCollagers in conversation about reading their SoulCollage cards. A highlight of this Tele-Playshop is the live reading that Anne Marie and Karen demonstrated with their own decks. You can access this recording here: http://www.KaleidoSoul.com/audio-readings-page.html The password to access the audio page is listen. You can save the recording as an mp3 file on your computer so that you can listen to it whenever you choose.

What Is A SoulCollage® Reading?What Is A SoulCollage® Reading?What Is A SoulCollage® Reading?What Is A SoulCollage® Reading?

There are many oracular forms available in our world right now, just as there were in ancient times.

There are Runes, I Ching, astrology, and others.

Some people take a book of holy scripture, open to a page, point at random to a line, and find words of direction and help.

Is this a return to superstition and magic? Is it some sort of devil worship? Not at all.

It is a return to the valuing of intuition, and also a return to a more

mystical understanding of reality.

---- Seena Frost, from the book SoulCollage

Any time that you consult the cards in your deck intentionally, you are doing a SoulCollage Reading. This can be done in many ways:

• on a daily basis, or just occasionally

• alone, or with a partner or group

• whenever you have a question about your life’s journey or when you just want affirmation for the direction you’ve already chosen

When you do a SoulCollage Reading, you use your deck to randomly choose cards that will help you to:

• answer questions about your life’s journey

• access your own inner wisdom

• help you through a difficult time

• get to know yourself better

• help you with relationship issues

Page 8: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

8

An Interpretation vs. A Reading Reading your SoulCollage cards is different from interpreting your cards. When you interpret a SoulCollage card, you are developing a relationship with that one card. You are asking it questions in order to dive deeper into the meaning of that card. When you do a SoulCollage Reading, you are randomly drawing cards from the totality of your deck in order to add depth and meaning (and maybe an answer or two!) to your life’s journey.

Tarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages on Tarot. But a Tarot card reading is not the same as a SoulCollage Reading. Tarot cards originated in the 15th century in the royal courts of Northern Italy, while SoulCollage was created by Seena Frost in 1989 in northern California. A tarot deck has 78 cards, each featuring a different symbolic image. Of the 78 cards, 22 of them are specific characters (ie: Death, The Lovers). This set is called the Major Arcana. There are also four suits of 14 cards each in every deck. These are called the Minor Arcana cards. The cards are initially created by an artist and then published for purchase. As you may already know, a SoulCollage deck doesn’t have a set number of cards. This is totally up to the creator- you! Some decks have over 100 cards, and some have 10 or 20. Others have any amount in between. There are four suggested suits , although you may add more suits as you wish. Each card is handmade by the artist using paper collage. SoulCollage decks are never for sale, trade, or barter because we make them for our own personal use, and because of the copyright issues involved. Tarot card readings are often done as a means of divination, or foretelling the future. SoulCollage Readings are experienced as a way for us to explore our own life’s journey more deeply rather than an oracle which predicts our future. You can ask a question of a Tarot deck and receive answers. A trained Tarot card reader can help you understand the answers because they have knowledge of the symbolic meanings of all of the cards with a Tarot deck. However, you don’t need special training to comprehend the answers that arise during a SoulCollage Reading, because YOU are the one who created the cards in

Page 9: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

9

your deck. All of the cards in your SoulCollage deck are personal to you and you alone… and you already have a relationship with most of them. Therefore, you don’t need a special “reader” to infer meaning from the cards that you draw. You will be able to do this intuitively because on a soul level, you already are aware of each card’s meaning.

Before You BeginBefore You BeginBefore You BeginBefore You Begin---- Creating Sacred SpaceCreating Sacred SpaceCreating Sacred SpaceCreating Sacred Space

Your sacred space is

where you can find yourself again and again.

--- Joseph Campbell This e-book shows you, step by step, how to create and experience several different kinds of SoulCollage® card readings. But there are some things you need to do first, to “set the stage” for any SoulCollage reading that you do. These things all involve creating sacred space.

What is Sacred Space? The best, simplest, and most creative definition I’ve seen yet for creating sacred space was something like this: taking useless stuff and putting it outside your door. When you create sacred space, you are drawing a circle (literally or figuratively) around your physical, emotional and spiritual self in order to signal to your inner and outer worlds that you are entering sacred time. You are sending a signal to all parts of you that says, “This is soul time for me. Everything else can wait.” Here are just a few ways to “draw that circle” and create sacred space before doing a SoulCollage Reading:

• light a candle

• lay a special scarf down under your deck

• play soft music that your soul responds to

• drape a favorite scarf or shawl around your shoulders

• say a short prayer

• close the door and turn off all phones

• put a flower or vase of flowers next to your deck

• light some incense

• sit quietly with eyes closed before you begin

• do a brief guided visualization before asking your question

• chant on your own or with a favorite CD

• anoint yourself with a special fragrant oil that you have chosen

Page 11: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

11

• play a musical instrument for a few minutes

The above list is by no means final. You are perfectly free to come up with your own ways of creating sacred space, and can add to this list at any time.

The Source Card The Source Card plays an important role in any SoulCollage Reading because it holds the space for all of the other cards in your deck. It is the “One” essence that contains all of the other essences (the “Many”) in your deck. When you do a SoulCollage Reading, it’s a good idea to lay your Source Card on the table first. It is not a card that is to be chosen randomly, because it is not a card that has a “voice” that can speak to you and answer your questions. If you would like more information about the Source Card, please read Seena Frost’s article on The One and the Many and the Source Card. If you haven’t found the right images yet for your Source Card, don’t worry! You can still do a SoulCollage reading! You may want to lay on your Reading space a special stone or shell or figurine that represents Source to you instead. Or you can simply take some conscious breaths before you begin and allow Source/The Divine to be present with you in a different way.

Why Create Sacred Space in a SoulCollage Reading? It’s important to consciously invite the sacred into your SoulCollage Reading space simply because what you are doing is a sacred thing. You are asking a question and then allowing your SoulCollage cards to draw the answers out of your soul. Any time you do soul work of any kind, it’s a good idea to consciously create sacred space. Even something as simple as slowing down first and taking a conscious breath in and out can help to center and ground you before you begin. And that’s what sacred space is all about: grounding and centering so that we are more ready and able to receive the answers to the life questions that we are asking.

Daily ReadingsDaily ReadingsDaily ReadingsDaily Readings

It was as clear a reading as he had ever done for himself. Marvin wandered through the landscape that the cards laid out for

him, nodding to the images: Yeah, I know you. How you doing?

--- Return of the Goddess: A Divine Comedy, by Elizabeth Cunningham

One of the best things I’ve ever done was begin a practice of Daily SoulCollage Readings. There are several ways to do this, and we’ll talk about them here.

One Card Daily Readings Simply draw one card every morning, randomly, from your deck. Sit with the card for a while in silence or with soft instrumental music playing in the background. You might want to close your eyes and have a conversation (in your imagination) with the entity on the card. Then spend a few minutes writing from and about the card that you drew. If you’ve never worked with the card before, spend some quality time doing a card interpretation where you ask the three basic questions, as well as any others that you want to ask. There is more information about SoulCollage Card Interpretations on this KaleidoSoul page. You will find even more suggestions and support for interpreting your cards in the e-book: How to Interpret Your SoulCollage Cards. If you have worked with this card already, you can simply write a few I Am The One Who… sentences to reacquaint yourself with this card’s meaning in your life. Then you can write a few sentences beginning with this statement:

The message that I have for you today is….

Or

What I have to say to you today is….

Page 13: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

13

Here is an example of a way to do this sort of a daily reading:

I Am The One Who winks at you with secrets and special dreams. I Am The One Who is dressed in leather and chains but who has a twinkle in my eye. I Am The One Who opens the windows and lets in the fresh air and sunshine. My message for you today is to lighten up and spend some time smiling. Stop taking yourself so seriously! Have a little fun!

Here is another example, using a card with a darker tone:

I Am The One Who is afraid that something bad is going to happen, and soon. I Am The One Who is waiting for the other shoe to drop and take away all the full abundance of my beautiful life. I Am The One Who can’t stop worrying about a bad thing/disaster that might be right around the corner. What I have to say to you is this: My energy is very present with you today. Notice how the beliefs that I carry influence your thoughts and feelings and actions. Your life is really full of bright color and joy and aliveness and love and sweetness… do not allow my old beliefs to stop you from enjoying what is right in front of you in this moment.

Page 14: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

14

Two Card Daily Readings You can follow a similar routine to that listed above, but choose two cards instead of one. Choosing two cards instead of one each day can be a very interesting process, as you can sometimes see relationships between the cards that you have chosen. Another thing you can do if you choose two cards every day is to allow the entities on each card to dialogue with each other instead of with you. You don’t need to do this every day. I do it once in a while, if I feel led to do so. This can lead to amazing insights about your inner parts and/or archetypes. For example, one day I drew these two cards in my daily reading:

NOT ENOUGH/SHAME RECEIVING

Here is what I wrote about each card individually: Not Enough/Shame (Note: I'd been working with this card for about a year. I made it intentionally after a session with my therapist where we explored the part of me who feels like I am not enough.) I Am The One Who isn't enough. I Am The One Who runs around like Dobby from the Harry Potter movies, banging my head against the wall and moaning "Bad Dobby, Bad Dobby." I Am The One Who believes I'm not enough unless I am constantly creating or producing or doing something. I Am The One Whose true self is locked away behind the

Page 15: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

15

door of achievement and perfectionism. I give you protection from your self-imposed ideas of failure. I keep you safe from those who might hurt or reject you. I was born the day that your first real boyfriend told you he didn't love you anymore. Until that day, you didn't know that people could stop loving you. Until then you accepted and received people's love freely. I was born from the wound of rejection, but I am not the truth.

Receiving (Note: At the time of this reading, I had never worked with this card before. It was made completely intuitively; I had no idea what it meant when I made it. I also had no idea what suit it belonged to in my deck.)

I Am The One Who dips both hands into the light and wonder that exists in the universe. I Am The One Who isn't afraid to take what is mine from the universe, who opens my hands to receive what Spirit freely gives me, who adorns myself with those daily gifts, who allows my inner beauty to blossom with a huge and radiant gorgeousness. I give you openness, and the desire to dip into the wonders of the universe. I want you to step right up and dip right in. I want you to stand still and open your hands and your heart to the universe, and then accept what you are given.

And here is the dialog that I wrote out between the central figures on the two cards:

(Note: for the sake of brevity, I will call the first card "Dobby" and the second card "Rose Goddess or RG") Rose Goddess: Hello Dobby, how are you doing today? Dobby: Not so good I guess. I'm still feeling tired and congested from the 12 hour plane trip on Monday. There must be something wrong with me. I'm still not eating right either. Rose Goddess: Oh, that's too bad. You must feel so bad right now. Is there anything I can do for you? Dobby: You want to do something for me? Rose Goddess: Yes, of course. Dobby: Why? Rose Goddess: We're all a part of the same inner family, you know.

Page 16: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

16

Dobby: Oh. Well, what could you do for me? I'm not used to asking for help from anyone. Rose Goddess: Hmmm.... well, maybe I could just hold you in my arms for a while and sing you a lullabye. How does that sound? Dobby: Like a big fat waste of time. It's 1:00 in the afternoon for crying out loud! I have a newsletter to write and two more web pages to finish, plus I have to get to the post office before it closes. Do you think I have time to lie in your arms while you sing me a lullabye? Sheesh. Rose Goddess: Oh, wow. I didn't know you were so busy. You have a lot to do, don't you? Dobby: Well, Gabriella (the overachiever/pusher) keeps telling me we have to do all of that stuff today. And I don't want to make her mad. I have to do what she says or.... RG: Or what? Dobby: Or I'll end up feeling bad about myself again. You know, the thing where I go around banging my head against the wall and saying how bad I am. RG: Why do you do that? Dobby: You mean you DON'T do that? RG: (thinks for a moment) No, I never have done that. Dobby: Really? I thought everybody did that. How come you don't do that? RG: Because I don't believe I'm bad. I'm really convinced that I'm beautiful and wonderful, no matter what someone says about me. Dobby: Humph. Well, look at you. You're slender and you have beautiful hair and .... well, face it, you're beautiful.

RG: Thank you, Dobby! I think you are beautiful too.

Dobby: But I'm short and goofy-looking and I have pointy ears and a wrinkled face.

RG: Oh Dobby, life is too short to go around making judgments on people based just on

their looks alone. I've only just met you, but already I see that you are a good listener

and interested in other people, and that there's a light in your heart that is just bursting

to get out.

Page 17: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

17

Dobby: Really? You see all that?

RG: I do.

Dobby: Wow. Well, thank you.... I guess. But then why.... if that is true, then why is it

that some people reject me and push me aside? Why is it that some people don't like me?

RG: Well, some people don't like me either.... you know, I can sometimes appear to be too cheerful and positive and looking on the bright side of things. That irritates some

people. And sometimes I can be cheerful and radiant to the point of expecting everyone

to be just like me when the truth is that's impossible. But I figure that when someone

rejects me or pushes me aside, it's because of something that's happening inside of them, something that they need to deal with, you know? Like when your first lover stopped loving you... that was something that was happening inside of him ... and it didn't have anything to do with who you were/are.

Dobby: Really? Wow, I never thought of it that way before. I guess you're right. Yes, I

really think you're right.

RG: And there's so much beauty and joy waiting all around you.... just take a minute and

look. I know you have important stuff to do today, and maybe you don't have time to let

me sing you a lullabye right now, but look around for a minute and take note of your own

little universe.... what is present to you right now that affirms your own goodness and

worth and lovability and enough-ness?

Dobby: (pauses and looks around) Well, there's my beautiful cat Sasha sleeping on the

chair beside me. And my husband in the next room taking a shower after working in the

yard all morning. And emails from dear friends waiting to be answered.

RG: Good! Now I will leave you alone for a while to do your work, but I will be back to

sing you a lullabye later tonight.

Dobby: Thank you!

Writing this dialog between these two cards from my Daily Reading gave me a much

greater insight into my Rose Goddess card. I had never worked with her before, and

listening to her interact with my “Not Enough” part helped me to understand her in a new

way. Also, my day was much more relaxed, once my “Not Enough” part felt listened to

and loved.

Another Example of Daily Readings Author’s Note: The following example is from Kathleen French, a SoulCollager in Nebraska. Doing daily Readings with my SoulCollage cards has proven to be an amazing journey. Each day is a personal message that uplifts and illuminates an area of my life. Some speak to a particular issue that I’m dealing with, others are more general, but each one feels like a personal divine message just for me. I set aside a little time each morning for prayer, and I do my SoulCollage readings as a part of this practice. The first thing I do is shuffle my cards and spread them out in a fan next to me. I sit quietly for a little while and after I’ve addressed any particular prayer concerns, I let my left hand move over the fanned out cards once completely and then back again until “it feels right,” then I pull out that card. I repeat this process and choose a second card. I place my Source Card next to me, then place face down the two cards I’ve chosen (or that have “chosen me” as Seena likes to say!). I sit quietly for a few more minutes. I turn the first card over. I write the date at the top of a page along with the name of the first card. I look at the card and let it speak to me. (If it is a card I haven’t worked with before, I do the ‘I Am The One Who…’ exercise first.) I begin writing. I let the card speak as it wants. Some days I am led to write more ‘I am the one who…’ statements. Other days the card addresses me in a more indirect manner. Some days the card speaks to me in the first person. I let whatever wants to be written happen. This process continues to evolve as I continue to do daily Readings. Then I turn the second card over and allow it to speak to me, again letting the card have control of the dialog. Each card has spoken individually to me. Then I start a second phase of writing, beginning with, ‘Today these cards tell me…’ and I let them address me directly as a pair. I have found this to be very illuminating. Many times the cards say things that are completely different from my initial reflection with the card. Together they are more powerful than each is on its own.

Page 19: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

19

When I have finished writing, I synthesize their message into a word or phrase that summarizes the message/energy for that day. I remind myself of this word throughout the day and use it as a sort of mantra for the day. Many times I ask, ‘How can I manifest this in my life?’ as I try to apply a practical action to the message given. As part of this process I keep two separate calendars. On one I write what cards were drawn that day and on the other I write what synthesized message was revealed that day. As I’ve looked back over the past month I can see cards that have been drawn repeatedly and also patterns in the messages received.

Example 1 – The Seeker (Council), Creative Child (Community)

Both the Seeker and the Creative Child yearn for expression – one for knowledge and understanding, one for joy in creative activity. Both energies come from God. Both enlist the process of just being and experiencing the Divine. How can I manifest this in my life today? Notice the details of the Divine in every object, every voice. Look for the Divine in the Ordinary, for God is in the daily experience as much as the divine experience. Practice the present moment. Be Brother Lawrence today. Essence – The Present Moment

Page 20: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

20

Example 2 – Emergence (Committee), The Seeker (Council)

Emergence – Walking out of the ruins I carry a large pot. The pot contains my hopes and dreams. It’s heavy. I’d really like to pour out the pot. I sit on a nest. I’m tired of sitting. I’d like to get these eggs hatched. The Seeker – I stand in front of an ocean. The waves crash around me. I see the earth and the moon. I am an explorer. The scent of heavenly flowers waft to my nose. I am seeking something, looking for something in the cosmos. Today these cards tell me that what I have been seeking will soon emerge. I don’t know what it is yet. My spirit is anxious to get on with it. I feel like I’ve been in incubation for a long time and something new will be manifested soon. Essence – Walking towards Destiny

Variations on a Theme There is no “right” or “perfect” way to do a Daily SoulCollage Reading, but there are as many “other” ways to do this as there are people practicing SoulCollage! For example, Seena Frost, who created SoulCollage, chooses two cards each day also. However, one of the two cards is always a card from her Community Suit. She chooses to do this because the Community Suit is deeply important to her in her daily life. You might choose to do the same thing. Or you might choose to always draw one Committee Card and one Council Card. Or two Committee Cards. Or a Companion Animal Card and one other card. If you like variety, you could vary the kinds of cards you choose from your deck each day. During a time in your life when you are needing a lot of support, you might choose a Council Card and a Companion Animal Card, purposely inviting into your life assistance from the more mystical, spiritual dimension. If you’re going through a period where you feel disconnected from others, you could make a point of choosing one Community card every day along with another card if you like. Or you might be in a stage of intense personal growth, in which case you might want to consciously choose two Committee Cards each day.

Organizing Your Daily Readings No matter which kind of daily readings you do with your SoulCollage deck, it’s very important to keep a record of them. This is so that you can look back and see the progress that you are making on your individual journey. It is also a very powerful way to access insights about yourself that you might not see or notice in any other way. Some people do their writings about their Readings in their regular journals. If you do this, I suggest that you do these writings in a different colored pen. Or that you put a sticky note on each Readings page so that you can find it more easily in the future. You might want to keep your Readings information on your favorite word processor program on your computer. This can be a good thing because you’ll be able to use the “find” feature to easily access certain cards or suits.

22

Another way to organize your Daily Readings is to store them in a loose-leaf 3 ring binder. There are many colors and varieties to choose from in your local office supply store! I shrink each of my cards by 50% (I love those color copiers at Staples!) and glue it onto a piece of lined notebook paper that is already 3-hole-punched. I keep them all in a large 3-ring binder that is separated with divider pages into categories based on the Suits of my deck. On each page I write the three basic questions where I ask the card: Who are you? What do you have to give me? and What do you want/need from me? Then, after I complete this basic interpretation, I have space to make notes each time the card shows up in a daily reading. And because I’m using loose-leaf notebook paper in a 3-ring binder, I have unlimited space to add pages. I love using this system, because I can easily look back and see right away how many times a certain card has already shown up in my Readings. This leads to very interesting insights as well. For example, soon after my beloved tiger cat (Scooter) died last spring, I drew his card in a daily reading, and when I went to his page in my Community Suit section, I noticed that I had “randomly” drawn his card approximately once a month during the four months prior to his death. This gave me goosebumps, because I remembered that each time I’d drawn his card during those months, I’d been led to a more acute awareness of his presence in my life and the gifts that he had to give me. Because of this, I’d also been led to pay more attention to him and even to slow down and spend more loving time with him. And drawing his card after his death reminded me that I was still deeply connected to him in ways that might be hard to define/describe, but are very real nonetheless. Drawing his card so soon after his death was also very comforting to me.

The Power of Daily Readings My “Scooter story” is just one example of how making Daily SoulCollage Readings a practice has made a huge difference in my life, sometimes without my even knowing it at the time. I also feel that doing Daily Readings with my SoulCollage Deck is a powerful practice because it keeps me in constant contact with my inner parts, my community circle, and my animal/spirit guides and archetypes. The beauty of this is that I am drawn, day by day, into the sweet wholeness that is mine alone.

Focused ReadingsFocused ReadingsFocused ReadingsFocused Readings

When the question is well framed, the answer will come.

--- Jean Shinoda Bolen

A focused reading is one that begins with a question. This question can be about a certain aspect of your life that you are struggling with. It can be about a relationship issue, or about something that has to do with your career or daily work life. It could be about parenting, your sexuality, or how to deal with a health crisis.

Drawing Cards Randomly When doing a focused reading in order to answer a question, you can draw one card from each suit, or you can draw three or four cards at random from your deck. A really good thing about drawing one card from each suit is that you’ll be given a whole and balanced perspective about your question. This is because you’ll be “hearing” ideas from your inner world and your community, as well as the more mystical dimension of animal totems and archetypes/spirit guides. In order to be able to draw a card from each of the four suits, the backs of your SoulCollage cards need to indicate what suit the card belongs to in your deck. Some people cover their card backs with wrapping paper, scrapbook paper, or handmade paper, and use a different color/pattern for each suit. You could also choose a rubber stamp or sticker for each suit and simply stamp or sticker the upper right corner of the back of every card based on what suit it is. When I make a card and add it to my deck, I don’t always know what suit it belongs to. This is perfectly okay! When doing a focused reading, I usually draw a card from each of the four suits, plus I draw a card from my stack of “unknown” cards. It’s important to remember that just because you don’t know what a card is all about, or what suit it belongs to, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have something to say to you right now about your question!

Page 24: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

24

It’s also interesting sometimes to draw randomly from your deck without even considering suits. The choice is totally yours. Try experimenting with different ways to draw the cards and see what you prefer.

Asking A Question Phrasing your question accurately is the best way to ensure that your Reading is helpful to you on as many different levels as possible. On page 81 of Seena Frost’s book, SoulCollage, she says: …finding a meaningful question is nearly as significant as allowing answers to come back through the cards. Try not to use a simple yes/no question, because this might severely limit the quality of the answer you will receive. However, as with everything pertaining to SoulCollage, there is an exception to this suggestion! One time in a group Reading, a friend of mine asked the question, “Am I on the right path?” And one of the cards she drew was this one (to the right), which is called “Yes To Life!” The answer to her was very clear. It is usually helpful to begin your questions with one of the following phrases:

How can I… Who will help me with… What’s up with… Which Neters will help me to… Who will guide me in… What can you tell me about… How do I… How can I become…

These are just examples of ways to phrase your Readings questions so that you can open yourself up to the possibilities that arise as answers. There are many examples of more specific questions in Seena Frost’s book on pages 81-83.

Page 25: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

25

Organizing Your Focused Readings I keep my readings in a separate 3-ring notebook which allows me to keep adding pages as I need to. It’s very important to put the date on the top of each reading that you do. I’ve found it immensely helpful at times to look back over my readings, because the answers I’ve been seeking are right there in front of me in black and white! Also, whenever a card shows up in a reading, I make a note on the card’s main page in my other 3-ring notebook where I keep my interpretations. The note may say something like this:

4/3/07- Reading on question about relationship with boss. See readings notebook.

This way, I have a record for each card of how often it is showing up in my Readings, daily and otherwise. This in itself can shed light on some important insights. For example, my Throat Chakra Lion showed up as my Companion Animal in a Reading after I’d been practicing SoulCollage for a year. After I allowed Lion to answer my question in my Readings notebook, I turned to Lion’s page in the Companions Suit section of my other notebook and made a note about his showing up in that Reading. As I looked back over my notes on Lion, I saw that I had drawn his card in every focused reading I’d done the last three times in a row! That was a surprising yet wonderful realization because I could see just how strong the message was for me to pay attention to the area of self-expression in my life.

Examples of Focused Readings What follows are several examples of SoulCollage card readings from different SoulCollagers. Each example is printed here with their permission. Note that each reading begins with a specific question, and leads the SoulCollager to a deeper understanding of herself and of a particular aspect of her life’s journey. Also note that each reading consists of allowing the cards drawn to speak about who they are, and about what they have to say to the question that has been asked. Usually, as part of a focused reading, the person asking the question will close the reading by summarizing what the reading as a whole said to her.

Focused SoulCollage Card Reading #1

I was feeling a great despair after a recent national election, but was able to use my SoulCollage deck to find my way through this despair.

Question: What would you have me know to help me process my feelings about this election?

I drew these three cards:

Goddess of Fertility I Am The One Who lives by the law of the jungle. I am ruled by my passions, my desire to breed, to be wild and uncontained. You can't tame me or contain me. You can only work with me. I am the great attractor because I offer life, the creation of new life. I will fight to protect life. This message is coded into the very essence of my being. It's the reason you even exist. I am both ancient and new. I will prevail. I admire the man who won. He is strong. He's a survivor. He's what we need now. But I will prevail. He may rape and destroy part of me, destroy part of my urge to fill the earth with people. But I will still prevail. I am what the Muslims are fighting. They hate me and want to control me. The man who won the election worships at my altar. He tries to control and contain me, but it is only his illusion. I don't seek power. I only seek life. And I will have life. Even if you all go away, I will survive. I am the Goddess of Fertility. I am the mechanism through which the Source manifests.

This card’s perspective was very unsettling to me, but I kept writing even though I wanted to edit and critique. I later realized that one of the issues distilled energetically by the election is the division of people who are motivated and driven by 1st, 2nd and 3rd chakra issues, from those who are moving on to the

4th chakra, and able to see more of the big picture. This card helped me to get the perspective of the first chakra point of view: that we have to protect our own, and that reproductive rights and who controls them lie at the heart of the fundamentalists’ point of view.

The Watcher I Am The One Who sees all. My eye is always open. I look even when I don't want to see, when I see things that disturb me. When I see how things are manipulated like chess pieces, I still keep looking. I am not a doer. I watch. I bare witness. Like the Pillars of the Temple, I stand guard by watching. The spirals of time circle to

Page 27: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

27

remind you that few things are new. Cycles repeat time and time again, so you can learn. My only job is to watch. You can do with my information as you like. You can choose to serve consciously or unconsciously, play your part in the game asleep or awake. However if you choose to be awake, you can serve the Goddess (she who stands for life) as a messenger, not just a pawn. My advice to you is to stay awake. Take these events as a way to help you awaken. Lost Innocence: I Am The One Who has lost my innocence and I'm sad and withdrawn. My wings have turned to dust and I'd prefer to wear a blindfold than look at the cruelty and darkness in the world. I feel like I've turned to stone. My heart feels cold and dead compared to when I was innocent and alive. I need help to open up again. I need time. My eyes are open however, even though I don't really want to see. All the hurt and pain in the world makes me very sad, especially when people don't love each other. It would be easier to be made of stone rather than flesh and blood. This 3-card reading moved me in a number of surprising ways and changed my mood surprisingly fast. Here’s what I realized:

• What I thought was despair revealed itself to be grief in disguise as hopelessness

• Childhood issues of loss triggered by the election deception gave me the opportunity to extend loving compassion to my own hurt and disappointment

• I understood the point of view of Bush supporters in a way that would have never occurred to me otherwise, and helped me see the big picture rather than polarize the events into simplistic good guys vs. bad guys

In short, I was able to move back into my center where I could live with compassion for myself and others. I was able to drop dualistic thinking and use fourth chakra affinity skills and thus take action, letting go of the ennui of powerlessness, keeping my eyes wide open. These words reverberated inside me as I continued to journal and process my feelings. It was the first time I really used the cards to process something really difficult and started to see the immense power in them. I'm very grateful to Seena and all who have helped bring this into the world! Suzie Wolfer, LCSW * SoulCollage Facilitator * Portland, Oregon Website: www.suziewolfer.com

Focused SoulCollage Card Reading #2

This reading is one that I did with my own deck when I’d been doing SoulCollage a little less than a year. I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety and fear when my gynecologist told me I needed to have a uterine biopsy. As a breast cancer survivor, I was deeply fearful of a recurrence. I had to wait three weeks for the biopsy and couldn’t see myself living from that anxiety for that long, so I turned to my SoulCollage deck for solace and wisdom. Question: Who in my deck has some wisdom to offer me on the issue of getting through the next three weeks before my uterine biopsy? These are the cards I drew and what they said to me: Creative Child (Committee Suit, right): What I say to you about your question is this: Let me come out and play! Each day, let me write or sing or dance or make some art. I live in this moment and in the pleasure of creating. I am not worried about the future because I know I can’t control it. Let me make some art, let me sing and dance and simply play during this time of waiting.

My Niece Stephanie (Community Suit, left): What I say to you about these next three weeks is this: Continue to make those conscious life choices that are true to your deepest self. Continue to embrace that inner dedication to your needs and to the needs of your community. Allow your own inner energy to heal you. And remember that you are not alone. You are very much loved.

Page 30: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

30

Little Brown Bird (Animal Companions Suit, left): Fly, Dear One, fly! Don’t let these next three weeks ground you with fear and anxiety. Remember that you have wings, and use them… use them well. All Shall Be Well (Council Suit, right): I want you to hold onto this saying (All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of thing shall be well…Julian of Norwich) and to this card because I

hold the deepest inner truth of all.. that all SHALL be well. No matter what. I want you to step into and embrace the faith that grounds this quotation’s reality. I want you to claim the faith that activates the reality of what happens when you truly believe that all shall be well. I want you to know that the road ahead is not necessarily chaos and darkness and grief. I want you to look ahead and see the beauty, the order, the bright bursts of color, and claim them for your own.

Forgiveness (extra card drawn, left): My wisdom for the next three weeks is this; let go of the past AND the future. Clearness of mind and soul is available to you in THIS present moment ONLY. Find a way to let go of what you are holding onto, of forgiving those who have hurt you. Immense healing comes with forgiveness. Be gentle with yourself, and offer forgiveness to yourself also.

I’m happy to say that my biopsy turned out to be nothing at all. And also, I was able to find a way to live during those three weeks of waiting. I was able, during those three weeks, to give myself the gift of remaining in the present moment, thanks to the gentle reminders I received from my cards. I did this primarily

through allowing my creative child time each day to do something fun and creative. I also did this by staying in close touch with my niece and other community members, and by meditating with my favorite quotation (All shall be well…). Focused SoulCollage Card Reading #3

Author’s Note: This reading was done during one of my Introduction to SoulCollage Workshops by a young woman who used my deck to answer her question. Since she had only a few cards in her deck at the time, she used my deck to intuitively draw just two cards to help her answer her question.

Note that the insights gleaned from this reading are written as lists. You might find this way easier than the paragraph writing form of the first two examples given above.

Question: What are my next steps after graduation from my Master’s Degree program?

These are the cards that she drew, and the answers that came to her through the images on my cards:

I Am The One Who…

wishes to become a mom is wondering if and when this will happen has been thinking about this a lot is named after an angel holds a lot for others in my line of work (as an expressive arts

therapist speaking about the vessels) is strong flies and travels but who also needs rest

Page 33: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

33

What others noticed in response to the first card pulled…

Woman as a vessel for the child Gabriel was the angel who went to Mary (my name is Gabrielle)

My next steps…

I’m going to be a mom I’ll continue with the arts therapy career (a holding vessel for

others)

I Am The One Who…

has been questioning my spirituality for many years is married to a Religious Studies PhD student focusing on Asian

religions is optimistic enjoys Mother Nature

What others said/noticed in response to the second card drawn…

Don't worry A sign from the universe that everything will be okay Resurrection and hope Trust Kwan Yin – the feminine/compassionate Buddha, patron saint

of healers, mothers, caregivers Feminine spiritual energy Have confidence in your path

My next steps…

Still more travel Renewed sensed of groundedness/spirituality Things will work out, be patient Serenity

Focused SoulCollage Card Reading #4 Past-Present-Future

Here is an example of a focused Reading that does not begin with a question. It begins with an intention to shed some light on a difficult issue, and with a look at the past, the present, and the future. I decided to do a SoulCollage card reading for myself around some family issues. Rather than trying to figure it all out in my head, I decided to do a Reading on where I am with the issue as it relates to the past, the present, and the future. I pulled three cards at random while thinking of my issue:

a card for past influence a card for present circumstances a card for future or outcome

Here is what came up in this reading for me:

Not a coincidence that the card I pulled for "past" is my Soul Whisperer card (left). I had to resist the temptation to "make" it say what I wanted. Instead, I was able to allow it to really speak to me. Here is what she said about my past: I Am One Who knows your truth. I know that your present decisions are influenced by the past. Thank you for listening to me. You can trust me and I will always lead you out into the sunshine.

Page 36: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

36

For the present, I pulled my Inner Guru card (right) which was also so appropriate to the situation. This is what this card said to me about my situation: I Am One Who trusts Spirit. I know that I am guided by a power that knows and wants only good for me. I Am One Who leads you to the stillness and knows that we are all born of Love.

For the future, I was very excited to pull my Oprah card (left) and it is certainly no surprise to me. If ever I doubted the power of intuition it is certainly not now. I have about 50 cards and there are not three others in this deck that would speak so perfectly to me now as this one does. I absolutely love my Oprah card as it is so powerful to me and so positive. Here is what it speaks to me about this issue: I Am One Who has risen above adversity and come through it with my heart intact. I love, I give and I take care of myself while doing so. I know my purpose and I live in it each day. I am truly whole.

Now I must admit that I have done precious few actual readings with my own cards though I often use other types of cards for readings (Angel, Tarot, even flipping through books). All of these methods work as they are all intuitive but I had to ask myself why do I trust them more than my own SoulCollage cards? The answer is in trusting MYSELF. In being quiet with myself, I am stepping out and taking a chance that I am on the right path. Because of this Reading, I have given up control of all of the outside circumstances that I cannot really control anyway. I am letting go, WITH LOVE, of those things and people that must save themselves and I do it with great gratitude that I have gained so much from these experiences. Focused SoulCollage Card Reading #5

Question: What might remedy the anxiety I'm feeling recently? I selected the three cards last night, but waited until this morning to sit and journal with them. The process was very interesting, because my rational mind would not have selected any of these cards as most relevant to this problem, and yet the three cards selected each have offered me something that I feel is really helpful. Here they are:

The Imprisoned, Longing for Freedom. After writing some I Am The One Who… statements, this card suggests to me that I imprison myself within my own thinking, that no one else is creating the limits which cause me fear and anxiety. It says You can free your own mind. It also reminds me of this quote which I read last night too.

Page 38: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

38

The second card I drew was my Letting My Child Go card. This card reminded me that, now that I have released my son into the world as a caring, responsible, adult, it is okay to let him know what I am feeling. I can let him know about my anxieties or worries without making him feel responsible for them.

The third card in the Reading is my Autumn Self card. What this card reminds me of is the store of resources I have already built up, and the harvest I have already created in my life. It tells me I can trust that what I have gathered in my life will sustain me in times to come.

Overall, the effect of the three cards in combination is to remind me that I can control my thoughts, that I can draw on support without making others responsible for me, and I already have many inner resources that will carry me through. Monthly I realized this year how much I really love New Year’s Day! I enjoy the feeling of having a fresh start, and of new beginnings. For the last few years I have celebrated by doing a New Year’s Day SoulCollage Card Reading, asking the question: which of my Neters will guide me this year? This year I decided why not give myself that “new beginning” on the first day of every month? So I’ve been doing New Month’s Day Celebrations/Readings instead! On the first day of each month I ask something like this: Who has ideas to share with me about how to direct my focus this month? Then I draw one card from each suit. I allow each card to speak to me from a few I Am The One Who… statements. Then I allow each one to answer my question. It’s really amazing (random… yet divine) how each month I hear exactly what I need to hear! I keep smaller versions of the cards that I drew propped up on my desk for the entire month as reminders of their wisdom and messages to me from the Reading. Sometimes I hold off on the Daily Readings simply because there’s already so much for my soul to “digest” from the Monthly Reading! You could also adapt this idea into a Weekly Reading if you wanted to.

Group If you are fortunate enough to live near others who are also practicing SoulCollage, you might want to try a Group Reading with your cards. There are as many variations on this theme as there are SoulCollagers, but here is a simple way to get started (adapted from Seena Frost’s SoulCollage Facilitator Training): Everyone sits in a circle, with a notebook or piece of paper in front of them, and their SoulCollage decks. All Source Cards are placed in the center of the circle, perhaps with a candle burning, or a small vase of flowers.

Page 40: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

40

Each person writes their question on the top of their paper, then in complete silence randomly chooses two or three cards (this is determined ahead of time, depending on how much time the group has) from their deck and places them FACE DOWN in front of themselves. Everyone passes their notebook to the person on their right. The first person shares their question with the group, then turns over their first card and says aloud some I Am The One Who… statements from the card. The person on their right (who now has the first person’s notebook/question) acts as scribe for them and jots down everything they say from and about the card. Then the first person, still speaking from their first SoulCollage card, says, “What I have to say to you about your question is this…” The scribe continues to write until the person feels that their message is complete. This is repeated around the circle until everyone has drawn and spoken from their first card. Then the process is repeated until everyone has answered their question with all of their cards. At this point, each person in turn could look at the totality of their Reading and one at a time, invite the others in the circle to share any thoughts or impressions or ideas that they have to add to what the person has already said. The Scribes should continue to jot down notes as to what other people say, so that each person has a page full of “answers” when they leave.

Another Group Reading Idea If you are part of a group who meets regularly, you might want to ask a question as a group once in a while. You could do this to determine the direction and focus of the group, or to help solve a challenge that the group has been experiencing as a whole. Decide together on the question that you want to ask, then follow the guidelines above for a focused reading. Each person can randomly draw one or more cards from his/her deck and then allow the cards to speak in turn to the question at hand.

Page 41: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

41

Don’t forget to create sacred space first, so that everyone is more open to the answers that will come. This is a great idea for business partners, or couples to do as well, using a question that pertains to them as a unit instead of different questions asked by each individual.

Using Someone Else’s Deck Although we don’t create our SoulCollage decks with other people in mind, I’ve found in my work as a Facilitator that others usually deeply benefit when they ask their own question, and draw cards from my deck to answer them. And while I wouldn’t suggest that you make a habit out of offering your deck to your friends/family for them to do readings with, you can trust your intuition for those times when it does seem right. Here are a few stories shared by SoulCollage Facilitators whose workshop participants have experienced insight and healing from drawing cards from their decks: I seem to have lots of first-timers at my monthly workshops. I usually open by having each person choose a card from my deck. I then have each person state their name, and ask them to speak from the card, or talk about, how it relates to their intention for the experience. This is how we do introductions. My deck is, of course, very personal to me, yet everyone gets something very relevant and helpful from the card they choose ( and often very different from my intention when creating the card). At my workshop on Saturday, a newcomer to SoulCollage chose a card I had made of my favorite television character from childhood: Samantha of Bewitched. I felt a little embarrassed--not knowing how she would react, but she smiled and said, "Well, I didn't know what to make of this card at first, but you know, I am a Wiccan, and I do believe in magic." It was so funny, I had to laugh! It is tempting for me to withdraw the cards that I feel might be "inappropriate" or "irrelevant" to others, but I am very glad I haven't done this. Even the cards that represent painful events for me, can say something positive to others in the context of their lives, and this then becomes part of my own healing process.

Page 42: Completely Random,Completely Random, Completely DivineTarot Card Readings vs. SoulCollage Readings If you Google the words “card reading,” you will be led to hundreds of pages

42

Here is another short story: One first-timer drew a card from my deck which shows a child in a classroom, with lots of other kids and teachers… etc. The woman exclaimed that she was so surprised, because she was struggling with a decision about whether or not to go back to her teaching job. Her intention for the workshop was to get clarity around this decision! What she saw in the card was the "chaos" of the classroom, and that alone made her realize that she did not want to go back!

This is totally up to you… there is no right answer to this question. As long

as you have more than one, you can do a Reading with your cards! A

SoulCollage deck is never complete; it is always changing, so don’t wait until

you have a certain number of cards to start asking your questions. Also, it’s

not necessary to wait until you have cards for every suit.

Is there a best way to draw a card? Should I just close my eyes and

grab one? Or should I take more time?

I don’t think there’s a “best” way, but I do think it’s important to take your

time before drawing a card from your deck during a Reading. I usually close

my eyes and wait until I feel intuitively “led” to a certain part of the deck

that is spread out before me. Then I draw a card from that area of the

deck.

What if I draw one of my darker, shadowy cards when asking a question

of my deck?

This is perfectly fine, because each part of us has something valuable to give us, and has vital information to share with us when we ask a question about

our lives.

For example, one time I asked a question about my

relationship with my stepdaughters, and one of the

cards I drew was my Bully card (right). Listening to

that part of me gave me a great deal of insight into

how I was relating to the oldest girl, and to how she was relating to the younger one. I was able to see

the whole situation in a different perspective,

thanks to my inner bully!

A card that depicts a part

of ourselves that is dark

and shadowy can usually give us a powerful message

about how a certain situation came to be. For

example, I was struggling once with a situation at

my former job, so I asked a question about that

and drew two cards, looking for an answer. One of

the cards I drew was my Judges card (left). This

card represents the part of me who judges other

people and usually finds them lacking. There is a

certain essence of superiority in this card, and the

fact that there are FOUR of them makes this

energy of judgment even bigger. I’m not proud of

this part of me, and yet I know it exists, and I

honored it with a SoulCollage card. In this particular Reading, my Judges

told me that I’d been using their energy quite a bit lately to render

judgments about my boss, and that that was where my problem with her was

coming from. Once I realized this and was able to let go of judging her, my

problem quickly resolved.

If I don’t know what suit a card is in (or what it means), can I still

draw it in a Reading?

Yes! Whenever I’m doing a Reading, I always include my “untitled cards.” I

believe that they are an important part of me, even though I may not know

exactly what they mean. And they always seem to show up in a Reading

exactly when I am most ready to hear from them. I keep a page for each of

them in my Interpretations Notebook in a section called “Untitled.” This

way, when they show up in a Reading, I have a page all ready to start writing

about them.

How many cards should I use in a reading?

You should draw from the totality of your full deck every time you do a

Reading. As for how many cards to actually draw in a reading… that is

entirely up to you. There is no right way. In this e-book, I have tried to

include a variety of Readings with different numbers of cards drawn, just to

show you that there is no one “correct” way to do this. It’s really a matter

of what you need from each Reading, and how much you have time for.

Can I do a reading for someone else- where they ask a question and I

tell them what my cards mean?

It is not recommended that you use your deck in this way. As you have seen in a few of the examples given in this e-book, powerful insights occurred

when people drew cards from someone else’s deck. But those insights

emerged because the person drawing the cards directly inferred the meaning from them, not because the cards’ creator told them what the card was about. For example, in Gabrielle’s reading on page 32, one of the cards

she drew was my “Childless” card, which I made to honor the part of me who

grieves not having had children of my own. If I had shared this with

Gabrielle when she drew that card, it would have unduly influenced her own

intuitive reading of that card.
