    Agenda

  • Integrated Care Project/Managed Care Initiative Jan Getty | Resource Link of MichiganBetsy Rust | Plante & Moran LTC Managed Care will be implemented in Michigan through the Integrated Care Organization (ICO) Demonstration for dual eligible Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries. The entry of duals into managed care will have an evolving impact on how nursing facilities provide care and operate their businesses. This session will explore managed care from the perspective of the ICO health plan, how nursing facilities interact with plans and how to manage the cost of care.

Data Analysis: A Critical Element for Success in a Managed Care EnvironmentBill Hartung | Healthcare Data ConsultingData is an essential element in todays world of health care for measuring outcomes and performance. What data is relevant? How can it be used to drive quality of care? How to manage the collection and distribution of all this data? All of these questions and more will be addressed during this session on data collection and analytics. Health Care Reform not only changed health care but it mandates the evaluation and monitoring of those changes. Data exchanges for care and quality will be an ongoing part of the new paradigm in providing managed care in long term care environments.

The Managed Care Organization PerspectiveRick Murdock | Michigan Association of Health PlansThe Michigan Association of Health Plan members will provide an inside look on how they are getting ready to implement the Michigan ICO Duals Demo later in 2014. This session will discuss how health plans develop provider networks, contracting for care, communication with nursing facility providers and the need for electronic data exchanges. A question and answer period will allow attendees a chance to interact with key health plan CEOs involved in the Michigan ICO Duals Demo to seek insight into how this integrated care proposal will move forward.

Legal Hot Topics: DNR & Employment Law UpdateAndy Rothman | Lebenbom & RothmanGrant Pecor | Clark HillThis session brings you two authorities in the field of Long-term care law Andy Rothman, JD speaking on the impact of the changes to Michigans Do Not Resuscitate Law and Grant Pecor, JD addressing a myriad of labor issues facing us in 2014. Join us in learning how to implement the changes in the DNR law and how to prepare for employment law changes affecting our labor force resulting from the Affordable Care Act and recent labor law decisions.

Michigans Plan for Boosting Senior ServicesGOVERNOR RICK SNYDER, Michigan The Governors Executive Budget for Fiscal 2015 contains $51.6 billion in spending including $17.4 for Medicaid services. Healthcare is an economic force in Michigan and the largest private sector employer. This session will discuss the impact of healthcare on the Michigan economy and caring for citizens seeking Medicaid and other services. The Governor will present his policy of a No Wait state including: services to those on the wait list for Home and Community Based Waiver program, expansion of PACE, services for seniors offered through the Office of Services for the Aging, Healthy Michigan/Medicaid Expansion and Mental Health Commission recommendations.

Back to the Future: Applying Qual ity Basics in a Decade of Start l ing ChangeDR. STEVEN LEVENSON, Genesis Health CareThe health care system is undergoing dramatic changes. Roles of long-term care facilities are evolving rapidly and calling for consistently high levels of organization, reliability, and clinical competence. Facilities are challenged to identify how to meet high expectations in the face of uncertain reimbursement. The surprising answer lies in solid grounding in certain enduring and universal clinical and operational principles and practices. This session will review those basics and how best to use them to your advantage.

    Keynote Sessions

    General Sessions

  • Breaking the Rx Hex: Secrets to Safe and Effective Medication UseDr. Steven Levenson | Genesis Health CareOver the years, the number of medications available for various conditions has increased dramatically. At the same time, concerns about safe and effective medication use have persisted. There have been many initiatives to try to focus on which medications to use, when, and for what indications. Still more initiatives have developed to tell everyone what not to use. Common examples are the push to treat pain and the pressure not to use certain medications to manage behavior and psychiatric symptoms. This session will cut through all of this to focus on the basics: regardless of the category or the initiative, how facilities can use all medications appropriately and safely to do the most good possible while simultaneously resulting in the least possible harm.

Affordable Care Act Updates: The Real FactsRob Pivonka | Rolf Goffman Martin LangEmployers are struggling trying to determine their obligations under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and how it could affect their business. Issues are further complicated by implementation delays and confusing and inaccurate information in the press. This session will help prepare employers for the implementation of the employer mandates under the ACA.

How to Keep a Crisis Under Control: Effectively Managing Public RelationsGreg Crist | American Health Care AssociationElizabeth Thomas | Health Care Association of MichiganIts late at night when the phone rings. The TV cameras will be at your facility first thing in the morning. What do you do? What do you say? This program will deconstruct all the facets that build a proper media story, as well as help attendees know the steps they can take to properly manage media inquiries, both benign and crisis-driven.

2014 Regulatory UpdateAndy Rothman | Lebenbom & RothmanVickie Burlew | Lebenbom & RothmanFeeling like you are running on the hamsters wheel trying to catch up with the changes by CMS and the state? Are the changes happening so fast that you feel you cannot keep up? This session is for you! Not only does it provide tools and information to meet current expectation; it prepares you for the changes that are still in the development phase. Attend for discussion of reportable events, antipsychotic medications, changes to Michigans DNR law, QAPI, and much more.

CPR in the Continuum of Care: Myths, Realities & Challenges (Part 1 & 2)Josh Allen | Care and Compliance GroupHow CPR is handled in any senior-living community or long-term care facility when a resident is not breathing and/or is pulseless has become a hot button issue due to recent national media coverage of a 911 call in California. This two-part session will consider what really happened and what you should consider when establishing your policies and procedures. We will also explore broader end of life issues, including hospice services, honoring resident wishes, and DNRs. This session is of interest to all levels of long-term care and residential living settings.

Preparation for Inspections & Special Investigations (AFC & HFA)Angie Szumlinski | Health Cap RMSAndrea DeLandThere are things that keep every Administrator awake at night: elopements, falls, citations, census, etc. Have you ever had a knock at your door, the receptionist with a deer in the headlights look hands you a business card with a Federal insignia on it? Hopefully you will never have this experience; however, if you do, will you know what to do? What rights do you, your residents, your facility and your staff members have? This session was developed with you in mind! We will discuss the who, what, when, where, why and how to manage these visitors while protecting your rights and the rights of those entrusted to your care.

The HCBS Rule and Other News from WashingtonDave Kyllo | National Center for Assisted LivingThis seminar provides an overview about Congressional and Administration activities that affect assisted living, including recent Congressional oversight and details about the new CMS rule governing home and community-based settings under Medicaid waiver programs. New federal government statistics comparing five sectors of long term care will be presented, along with several initiatives being undertaken by federal departments and agencies that affect assisted living. Other key industry trends and state policy developments will also be discussed.

Financial Risk Management: Tools to Minimize Financial Loss Due to Payment ChallengesMargaret Chamberlain | The Kitch FirmJohn Hessburg | The Kitch FirmIn this economy, providers are increasingly facing difficulties with receiving payment. These problems arise in part out of the simply failure of the resident or their fiduciary to make payment, the failure to comply with the Medicaid application process, or in the worst scenarios, the financial exploitation of the resident. There are Federal and State laws, rules and regulations that create boundaries on actions a provider can take in these circumstances. This presentation will provide attendees with the tools to minimize financial losses due to non-payment.

Building the Future: Factors for ConsiderationBrendan Healy | Lancaster PollardRob Long | Plante & MoranIn this presentation, Lancaster Pollard and Plante Moran will take a detailed look at accessing capital for renovations, expansions and new construction. Lancaster Pollard will provide an overview of the different methods and sources available for finding project capital and what organizational considerations lenders and equity providers will focus on in their review of the project. Plante Moran will examine the environmental, demographic and reimbursement considerations that must be analyzed when a borrower is considering a potential project. At the end of the presentation the audience should have a solid understanding of what factors to consider in developing a project plan and what potential options would be available to finance that project.

Under Siege: Preparing for & Defending Against Governmental Inspections & Audits (SNF)Brenda Sowash | Plante & MoranAric Martin | Rolf Goffman Martin LangLong-term care and post-acute providers continue to be under a very high level of scrutiny, not only from traditional oversight agencies, but also from many other sources. The Department of Justice (DOJ), the Office of Inspector General (OIG), numerous governmental contractors (MACs, ZPICs, MRAs, MICs), private whistleblowers (qui tam relators) are just some of the prying eyes watching over todays providers. This session will identify the entities that are targeting you, identify risk factors that may make you a target, and discuss how to structure internal mechanisms to prepare for and respond to such scrutiny

Everything You Need to Know About Maintaining Sufficient Cash FlowBeth Sullivan | Plante & MoranAlisha Davis | Plante & MoranThis session will review of the current operating procedures for a SNF, describe the way cash is booked into the GL, review how to reconcile these amounts with contractual adjustments, and review how to determine if a Medicaid settlement is accurate utilizing cash receipts and audit adjustments.
