    ABSTRACT:THIS ARTICLE NARRATES HOW TATA MOTORS,TATA CHEMICALS AND TATA STEEL HAVE

    STRETCHED ITS WING INTO VARIOUS ACTIVITIES TOWARDS SOCIAL AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT .

    TATA MOTORS BEING THE LEADING AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY IN INDIA BAGGED THE GOLDEN PEACOCK

    AWARD FOR THE YEAR 2004 FOR ITS VALUABLE CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS ECONOMIC, COMMUNITY

    DEVELOPMENT AND CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY .THE INITIAL WORK STARTED WITH THE

    WELL BEING OF THE COMPANY EMPLOYEES, THEIR LIVING CONDITION, HEALTH AND EDUCATION

    WHICH LATER TURNED TO COMMUNITY WELL BEING THROUGH VARIOUS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

    CENTERS,SAMITIES AND PROGRAMMES.

    TATA CHEMICALS ON THE OTHER HAND IS THE LARGEST INORGANIC CHEMICAL COMPLEX IN THE

    COUNTRY THAT PRODUCES THE HIGHEST SYNTHETIC SODA IN THE WORLD AND IS WELL KNOWN FOR ITS

    WORLD-CLASS ENERGY EFFICIENCY STANDARD AND HAD WORKED ON VARIED FIELDS OF

    ENVIRONMENTAL CONSERVATION, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND SAFETY.THE MAJOR SUCCESS OF

    TATA CHEMICALS IS TOWARDS COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF TATA KISAN

    KENDRAS (TKK'S) AND TATA KISAN SANSAR (TSS).IT HAD PROMOTED TATA CHEMICALS'SOCIETY

    FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT (TCSRD) FOR THE BENEFIT OF RURAL POPULATION BY PROVIDING ALL

    SOPHISTICATED TECHNOLOGIES LIKE SATELLITE MAPPING, GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM

    (GIS) ETC FOR SELECTING AND USING RIGHT KIND OF SEEDS FROM SOWING TO POST-HARVEST STAGE.

    THE KENDRAS PROVIDES A WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES LIKE : CREDITS TO THE FARMERS, INSURANCE OF

    CROPS AGAINST NATURAL DISASTERS, AVAILING BUYBACK FACILITIES ETC.THESE HAVE RESULTED IN

    ECONOMIC STABILITY OF FARMERS.

    TATA STEEL THE WORLD LEADER IN STEEL MARKET HAS FOR DECADES USED ITS SKILLS AND RESOURCES,

    TO THE EXTENT IT CAN REASONABLY AFFORD, TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY A FAIR SHARE OF THE PRODUCT

    OF ITS EFFORTS.

    IT WAS THE FIRST TO ESTABLISH LABOUR WELFARE PRACTICES, EVEN BEFORE THESE WERE MADE STATUTORY

    LAWS ACROSS THE WORLD. IN 1912 IT INVITED SIDNEY AND BEATRICE WEBB, THE FOUNDERS OF THE LONDON

    SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS, TO PREPARE A MEMORANDUM OF HEALTH FOR THE STEEL CITY. THE COMPANY ALSO

    INSTITUTED AN EIGHT-HOUR WORKDAY IN 1912, FREE MEDICAL AID IN 1915, A WELFARE DEPARTMENT IN 1917,

    LEAVE WITH PAY, WORKERS PROVIDENT FUND AND WORKMENS COMPENSATION IN 1920 AND MATERNITY

    BENEFIT FOR LADIES IN 1928.

    WITH THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THE HUNGER FOR EMPLOYMENT CAN NEVER BE SATISFIED DESPITE ITS BEST

    EFFORTS, THE COMPANY TOOK AN ENLIGHTENED DECISION TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THOSE WHO MIGRATED TO

    EDUCATION AND INCOME GENERATION THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF RURAL INFRASTRUCTURE,

    EMPOWERMENT AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMMES. TATA STEEL IS INDIAS ACKNOWLEDGED

    CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY LEADER AND IS RECOGNISED AS A MOST HUMANE ORGANISATION. EVERY

    LESSON LEARNED, EVERY PIECE OF KNOWLEDGE GATHERED, THE COMPANY OFFERS TO ALL THOSE WHO WISH TO

    WHAT IS CSR?WHILE THERE IS NO UNIVERSAL DEFINITION OF CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY, IT

    GENERALLY REFERS TO TRANSPARENT BUSINESS PRACTICES THAT ARE BASED ON ETHICAL VALUES ,

    COMPLIANCE WITH LEGAL REQUIREMENTS, AND RESPECT FOR PEOPLE, COMMUNITIES, AND THE

    ENVIRONMENT.THUS, BEYOND MAKING PROFITS, COMPANIES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TOTALITY OF

    THEIR IMPACT ON PEOPLE AND THE PLANET .1PEOPLE CONSTITUTE THE COMPANYS STAKEHOLDERS:

    ITS EMPLOYEES, CUSTOMERS, BUSINESS PARTNERS, INVESTORS, SUPPLIERS AND VENDORS, THE

    WHY DO COMPANIES DECIDE TO GET INVOLVED IN CSR, AND HOW DO THEYBENEFIT?

    TODAY, MORE AND MORE COMPANIES ARE REALIZING THAT IN ORDER TO STAY PRODUCTIVE ,

    COMPETITIVE, AND RELEVANT IN A RAPIDLY CHANGING BUSINESS WORLD, THEY HAVE TO BECOME

    SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE.IN THE LAST DECADE, GLOBALIZATION HAS BLURRED NATIONAL BORDERS,

    AND TECHNOLOGY HAS ACCELERATED TIME AND MASKED DISTANCE.GIVEN THIS SEA CHANGE IN THE

    CORPORATE ENVIRONMENT, COMPANIES WANT TO INCREASE THEIR ABILITY TO MANAGE THEIR

    PROFITS AND RISKS, AND TO PROTECT THE REPUTATION OF THEIR BRANDS.BECAUSE OF

    TATA MOTORS HAD CONTRIBUTED A VALUABLE AMOUNT OF EFFORT TOWARDS COMMUNITY AND

    ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AT JAMSHEDPUR,PUNE AND LUCKNOW.THE VARIOUS COMMUNITY

    DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMMES LIKE GRAM VIKAS KENDRA,SIKSHA PRASAR KENDRA,JAN PARIVAR

    KANYAN SANSTHAN ARE REMARKABLE AND THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENTAL SCHEMES UNDER TATA

    MOTORS GRIHINI UDYOG,INDUSTRIAL CO-OPERATIVES HAVE ACHIEVED A LEVEL OF SUCCESS.THE

    GOLDEN PEACOCK AWARD FOR THE YEAR 2004 WAS BAGGED BY TATA MOTORS FOR ITS EXCELLENT

    CONTRIBUTION TOWARDS SOCIAL AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT.

    DEVELOPMENT (TCSRD) FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE RURAL POPULATION , IN AND AROUND THE

    COMPANY 'S PLANTS AND TOWNSHIPS.TATA KISAN KENDRA (TKK) WAS THE INITIATIVE OF THE TATA

    GROUP UNDER THE FLAGSHIP OF TATA CHEMICALS TO CATER TO THE TECHNOLOGICAL ASPECTS FOR

    SOLVING INDIAS SOCIAL AND ECONOMICAL PROBLEMS FOR ENHANCING AGRICULTURAL

    PRODUCTIVITY AND IMPROVING THE CONDITION OF RURAL FARMERS.THE TATA KISAN KENDRAS

    PROVIDED END TO END AGRICULTURAL SOLUTIONS TO FARMERS BY PROVIDING THEM SOPHISTICATED

    TECHNOLOGY LIKE SATELLITE MAPPING, GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION SYSTEM (GIS)1 THROUGH

    TATA KISAN SANSAR IN FARMING BY SELECTING AND USING RIGHT KIND OF SEEDS FROM SOWING TO

    POST-HARVEST STAGE.

    TKKS PROVIDED FARMERS WITH SEEDS, PESTICIDES AND FERTILIZERS AT AFFORDABLE PRICES

    AND ALSO LEASED OUT FARM EQUIPMENT AND IMPLEMENTS.THE KENDRAS PROVIDED A WIDE RANGE

    OF SERVICES INCLUDING CREDITS TO THE FARMERS, INSURED THEIR CROPS AGAINST NATURALDISASTERS, AND EVEN AVAILING OF BUYBACK FACILITIES.

    Tata Steel has for decades used its skills and resources, to the extent it can reasonably afford, togive back to the community a fair share of the product of its efforts.

    It was the first to establish labour welfare practices, even before these were made statutory lawsacross the world. In 1912 it invited Sidney and Beatrice Webb, the Founders of the London School ofEconomics, to prepare a Memorandum of Health for the Steel City. The Company also instituted aneight-hour workday in 1912, free medical aid in 1915, a Welfare Department in 1917, leave with pay,Workers Provident Fund and Workmens Compensation in 1920 and Maternity Benefit for ladies in

    1928.

    With the understanding that the hunger for employment can never be satisfied despite its bestefforts, the Company took an enlightened decision to address the needs of those who migrated to itsvicinity in search for employment. It first stimulated entrepreneurship and economic development in theSteel City and then reached out to the rural poor, empowering them with the means to create betterlivelihoods within their own villages.

    At the same time, Tata Steel also fulfilled their basic need for health care, food security,education and income generation through the development of rural infrastructure, empowerment andcommunity outreach programmes.

    SAKWAR.THE MMVTRADE COURSE IS CARRIED OUT IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE RAMAKRISHNA

    MISSION,MUMBAI.THE STUDENTS SELECTED FOR THE MMVTRADE COURSE ARE TRIBAL YOUTH

    MEMBERS WHO HAVE PASSED AT LEAST CLASS VIII AND ARE EAGER TO LEARN THE TRADE.THE

    COURSE IS SPREAD OVER A PERIOD OF ONE YEAR AND FOLLOWS A SYLLABUS THAT INCLUDES THEORY

    CLASSES ALONG WITH PRACTICAL TRAINING AT VARIOUS DEALERSHIPS THRICE A YEAR FOR A PERIOD

    OF 15 DAYS EACH AND AT PUNE TRAINING DIVISION FOR A WEEK.THE CLASSROOM IS EQUIPPED WITH

    MR.JOWAHAR RAM PASWAN, A RESIDENT OF CHAIBASA, GOT THE FIRST TRACES OF LEPROSY

    AT THE AGE OF 15.AT THE TIME NOBODY PAID MUCH ATTENTION TO THE PATCH THAT HAD APPEARED

    TAKEN TO A LOCAL HOSPITAL, WHERE HE WAS DIAGNOSED TO BE SUFFERING FROM ADVANSED STAGELEPROSY.HOWEVER, DUE TO LACK OF MONEY, HE COULD NOT COMPLETE HIS TREATMENT.

    CIRCUMSTANCES DETERIORATED AND MR.PASWAN MOVED TO JAMSHEDPUR WHERE HE FOUND A JOB

    AS AN ATTENDANT AT A GUEST HOUSE.HOWEVER, WHEN THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE GUEST HOUSE

    CAME TO KNOW OF HIS DISEASE, HE WAS IMMEDIATELY DISMISSED.HIS NEIGHBOURS IN THE PLACE

    WHERE HE WAS STAYING ALSO TURNED HIM OUT FOR THEY FEARED HAVING A LEPER LIVING AMONGST

    THEM.

    WITH A SENSE OF DEFEAT AND DEJECTION,MR.PASWAN RETURNED TO CHAIBASA AND

    STARTED TRADING IN ILLICIT LIQUOR BUT IT WAS AGAINST HIS WILL AND HE ONCE AGAIN LEFT FOR

    JAMSHEDPUR IN SEARCH FOR SALVATION.THIS TIME, ON THE ADVICE OF SOME ACQUAINTANCES,MR.

    PASWAN VISITED NAV JAGRAT MANAV SAMAJ (NJMS), A TATA MOTORS SUPPORTED SOCIETY.AT

    NJMS, HE WAS GIVEN THE JOB OF PAINTING AND WRITING EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL FOR EXHIBITIONS

    AND WAS BEING TREATED FOR LEPROSY AS WELL .WHEN NJMS STARTED THE TEMPORARY STAY

    WARD AND OLD AGE HOME FOR LEPROSY PATIENTS,MR.PASWAN WAS GIVEN THE JOB OF

    CARETAKER.THUS,MR.PASWAN, NOW HAVING A PERMANENT JOB AND A STEADY INCOME, CAN WELL

    SUPPORT HIS WIFE AND HIS CHILDREN WHO ARE RECEIVING GOOD EDUCATION IN JAMSHEDPUR.

    LIKE CULTIVATION OF LIN-SEED, PULSES, MAIZE, VEGETABLES, SPINACH,PISCICULTURE,ANIMAL

    HUSBANDRY AS WELL AS BEE KEEPING WERE CONSTANTLY ORGANIZED AT GOPALPUR BY THE

    SKILLED PERSONNEL OF GRAM VIKAS KENDRA, AN INSTITUTION DEDICATED FOR RURAL

    DEVELOPMENT UNDER THE UMBRELLA OF COMMUNITY SERVICES.HAVING GONE THROUGH THESE

    TATASTEEL

    The wealth generated by Jamsetji Tata and his sons in half a century of industrial pioneering formed buta minute fraction of the amount by which they enriched the nation. The whole of that wealth is held intrust for the people and used exclusively for their benefit. The cycle is thus complete: what came from

    the people has gone back to the people many times over.

    Sharing Wealth to Diminish Disparities:For Jamsetji Tata, the progress of enterprise, welfare of people and the health of the enterprise wereinextricably linked. Wealth and the generation of wealth have never "been ends in themselves, but ameans to an end, for the increased prosperity of India," The Times of India said in 1912 of the Tatas.

    Successive generations of Tata Group leaders have always held the belief that no success in materialterms is worthwhile unless it serves the interest of the nation and is achieved by fair and honest means.

    Conscious that the task of social progress, especially in a country as diverse as India, cannot beundertaken by the Government alone, J R D Tata the Chairman of the Tata Group from 1938 to 1991,believed that, "to create good working conditions, to pay the best wages to its employees and providedecent housing to its employees are not enough for the industry, the aim of an industry should be to

    discharge its overall social responsibilities to the community and the society at large, where industryis located."

    At the vanguard of social commitment

    Guided by this mandate, Tata Steel has for decades used its skills and resources, to the extent it canreasonably afford, to give back to the community a fair share of the product of its efforts.

    It was the first to establish labour welfare practices, even before these were made statutory laws acrossthe world. In 1912 it invited Sidney and Beatrice Webb, the Founders of the London School ofEconomics, to prepare a Memorandum of Health for the Steel City. The Company also instituted aneight-hour workday in 1912, free medical aid in 1915, a Welfare Department in 1917, leave with pay,Workers Provident Fund and Workmens Compensation in 1920 and Maternity Benefit for ladies in

    1928.

    With the understanding that the hunger for employment can never be satisfied despite its best efforts, theCompany took an enlightened decision to address the needs of those who migrated to its vicinity insearch for employment. It first stimulated entrepreneurship and economic development in the Steel City

    and then reached out to the rural poor, empowering them with the means to create better livelihoodswithin their own villages.

    At the same time, Tata Steel also fulfilled their basic need for health care, food security, education andincome generation through the development of rural infrastructure, empowerment and communityoutreach programmes.

    By virtue of the extent of its demonstrated commitment for decades, through the beliefs and values it hasacted upon, the resources it has deployed, the wealth it has shared as well as the many "firsts" it hasachieved through socio-economic programmes, Tata Steel is Indias acknowledged Corporate SocialResponsibility leader and is recognised as a most humane organisation. Every lesson learned, everypiece of knowledge gathered, the Company offers to all those who wish to work alongside it to "improve

    the quality of life of the communities it serves."

    Education:Tata Steel has influenced the integration of tribals in the economy in a less obvious and immediate wayby propping up the education of tribal children and youth of various ages and at various stages of theiracademic career.

    Infants and toddlers are prepared for formal schooling in the informally run balwadis(crches/nurseries). The drop out rate of tribal students in schools and colleges has been checked withfinancial assistance and sponsorships.

    The TCS bears the entire expense of two tribal students who secure admissions for managementeducation at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. It also coaches students for entrance intoadministrative, technical and the public services.

    An unusual project called Sahyog, implemented in five schools, helps tribal students to develop self-esteem and plan their future.

    The Xavier Institute for Tribal Education near Jamshedpur has also been supported by Tata Steel toproduce professionally trained personnel.

    "Thank you Tata Steel and Tribal Cultural Society..."

    Had it not been for this fellowship from Tribal Cultural Society, I was bound to be like many others,recycled into the family's earning process at an age when I needed to be at school, says Sunita Murmu.

    And then came the announcement of Jyoti Fellowships. Sunita won the award not just for the year, but,for the next seven consecutive years as well. The fellowship saw her through matriculation andIntermediate. Relieved of the pressure, Sunita was able to concentrate and secure first division all

    through. At an award ceremony, when asked what she had to say about this assistance, Thank you,Tata Steel and Tribal Cultural Society were the words she uttered with extreme gratitude

    Tribals culture :Efforts to support tribals may well leave them at the doorstep of developmentwithout a sense of belongings and their cultural heritage.

    With a view to helping the tribal population preserve its rich inheritance, Tata Steel has set up the TribalCulture Centre (TCC) at a cost of Rs 35,00,000. This Centre showcases the tribal legacy of four majorand five minor tribes of Jharkhand and Orissa and evokes a lot of interest amidst scholars, researchers

    and even laypersons. TCC not only documents relevant research but also enables the continuation of thetradition by sharing it with the youth and non-tribals.

    Additionally, a Santhali Language Laboratory has also been initiated in the Centre since 2002-03.

    The centre was instrumental in reviving the now almost forgotten 'Kati' - a game played between twoteams that attempt to score points by hitting the opponent's Kati - a semicircular piece of wood by a longwooden stick using their feet. Known to be a game that used to be played by youths in non agriculturalseason, it tests the team spirit, physical strength and concentration levels of the players.

    "Hundreds of people joined..."

    Adim Dastoor, a three day programme, was organized at Bari Maidan, Jamshedpur. This culturalextravaganza showcased the heritage and lifestyle of the indigenous people in Jharkhand. Lecturedemonstration sessions on tribal heritage, exhibitions on historical advent of tribal movements, various

    forms of tribal dance and music, their relevance and specifics were dwelled upon at great lengthfollowed by actual performance by the experts.

    The event also showcased a day-night Kati tournament between 25 teams from all over Jharkhand andtribal Orissa.

    Tribal belief has it that within the 'Akhara' (common meeting place for men within the village), no one isan audience. Every step taken is dance, every word that is uttered is a song. The climax of the three-dayevent resounded this belief as hundreds of people in the ground joined in the performance accompaniedby 25 drum beaters who lent a sparkling end to the festival.

    Income generation for tribals:In order to help tribals address their basic needs in a self-reliantand sustainable way, Tata Steel has long been involved with increasing the agricultural productivity forthem in the rural areas through assured irrigation.

    Tata Steel, holding the belief that the tribals know best for themselves, has assisted in the formation ofmany Self Help Groups (SHGs).

    These SHGs enable the tribals to arrange for credit and engage in micro-enterprises like making Dokraitems, carpet weaving, terracotta, paper bag making, mat making, food processing, poultry, mushroomfarming, piggery, pisciculture and floriculture. Tata Steel provides these groups with training,

    networking and assistance in marketing.

    For making a long term impact on the prospects of the tribals, the Company has given them vocationaltraining in areas like basic computer operation, software management, shorthand, typing, motor drivingand handling pregnancies as birth attendants.

    techniques on packaging the candles we made, helped improve the presentation of the product...Deepawali, Christmas and Gram Shree Mela provided us with huge business prospects, which we wereable to encash upon. Next we received an order from Tata Steel to supply 5000 candles in a week's time.But there was will and that was what saw us through. My future plans are to improve our businessextensively and also to enter the metropolitan market. And with TCS behind us, we will make it. If I

    have found meaning in my life, it is because of TCS. Without them, my desire to do somethingsubstantial would have remained intangible forever.CC

    Health care :Among the most active sponsors of the Lifeline Expressa hospital on wheels- TataSteel has endeavored to take medical care far beyond those connected with its operations. This uniquetrain travels at the behest of its sponsors to those parts of rural India, left untouched by modernmedicine.

    At Jamshedpur, the Company runs a 850-bed general hospital with a specialised Burn Centre,Dispensaries and Super Dispensaries to reach out to its employees as well as a large number of citizens

    across the steel city. The network of specialised medical care units it has created also fulfills the need forlow cost, high quality medical care for the economically less privileged. It established the JamshedpurBlood Bank to provide safe blood to those in need and has very successfully promoted a culture ofvoluntary blood donations. At its outlocations the Company has set up hospitals, which cater to thehealthcare needs of people from the surrounding rural areas.

    The doctors and para medical staff of its hospitals as well as the dedicated staff of its social welfare armshave also taken health care awareness including eye care, tuberculosis treatment, general healthawareness, HIV/AIDS Awareness and Mother and Child survival programmes to a large number ofvillages and communities.

    Through the efforts of the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) and the Tata Steel FamilyInitiatives Foundation (TSFIF), the Company covers the rural and peri-urban population through basichealth care amenities. Both these social welfare arms of the Company have been building capacitythrough training programmes to create community based health care partners as well as grass-rootvolunteers.

    The Company has successfully changed notions of millions of villagers on water and sanitation, createda demand for better health facilities, ensured immunisation for tens of thousands and been instrumentalin bringing down infant mortality rates.

    The first corporation in the country to launch a family welfare programme, Tata Steel has beenpromoting controlled family planning since the 1950s. Through the innovative use of communicationmedia, motivational programmes have extremely successfully broken the barriers of prejudice andmyths to bring about the participation of communities, in even those which do not readily accept familyplanning.

    Jamshedpur today is a leader in demographic indices in the country. For the past 16 years, Tata SteelFamily Initiatives Foundation (TSFIF) - formerly the Family Planning Department - has been reachingout to the Community in Jamshedpur with Family Planning and Reproductive Health Services. It covers

    a heterogenous population of over 10,00,000 including adolescents and youth, industrial workers, busteedwellers and those from the indigenous tribes of the area. Now it is in the process of reauthoring its role,so as to extend both its capability and services into emerging sectors of need.

    Health and AIDS Awareness:The health and safety of the employees and the community iscritically interlocked with productivity and is enshrined in Tata Steels Vision. The Company has thus

    taken proactive steps in AIDS prevention by spreading awareness not only amongst its employees, butalso the community at large so that the inhabitants of Jamshedpur and at other locations, remain safe.

    Tata Steel has evolved a corporate sector model to prevent the spread of STD/HIV/AIDS, globally andnationally. This model is being shared through forums like ILO, Global Business Coalition on

    HIV/AIDS, Global Compact Initiatives, WHO-SE Asia Regional Office, NACO (National AIDSControl Organisation) and JAPC (Jharkhand AIDS Prevention Consortium) and more recently throughGlobal Reporting Initiatives. This programme extends to the rural and urban populace residing in andaround Jamshedpur.

    The Global Business Coalition, which is an alliance of over a hundred major international companieswho are expected to lead by example, is dedicated to combating this disease. Tata Steel is one of itsfounding members. The prestigious "Global Business Coalition Award (GBC) for 2003 for BusinessExcellence" was conferred on Tata Steel for its response to the epidemic and its outstanding HIV/AIDSAwareness work in Jamshedpur. The award is conferred on companies who have evolved best practiceson HIV/AIDS prevention, especially to reduce the stigma and discrimination. This award places Tata

    Steels initiatives at par with the best in the world, to be showcased globally.

    Tata Steel has over the years focused on five principal areas of environmentmanagement:

    Optimising all the natural resources to their fullest extent Focusing on water conservation and management Waste utilisation and energy conservation Pollution control (to reduce CO2 emission) Land reclamation along with afforestation

    Combating Climate Change:

    India currently has no Green House Gas (GHG) emission reduction targets in the first Kyotocommitment period up to 2012. However, being a part of UNFCCC, India has taken the initiative toparticipate in Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) under the Kyoto Protocol. CDM has opened up

    new opportunities for achieving revenue from carbon trading and Tata Steel is pursuing theseopportunities vigorously. The Company has registered its first CDM Project at the UNFCCC for TRT atG Blast Furnace and is also actively pursuing other programmes to combat climate change.

    Acknowledging the fact that the steel industry, as a sector, contributes 4% of the total man-made carbondi-oxide emissions globally, all Tata Steel Companies are committed to reducing greenhouse gasemissions and help and educate customers to do the same.     plan of investing in breakthrough technologies to reduce the carbon footprint by at least 20% inthe next ten years. It has incorporated in its operations technologies like ULCOS (Ultra-low CO2Steelmaking), which is aimed at reducing emissions in the process-cycle

    SPECIFIC INITIATIVES AT OPERATIONS:

    AT Jamshedpur

    The Jamshedpur Steel Works has benchmarked its activities with the IJmuiden Steel Works in theNetherlands and has undertaken several energy efficiency measures like maximising the utilisation ofby-product gases, efficient operations of blast furnaces, etc. In addition, a number of other Indian

    divisions of the Company too, undertook the Carbon Foot Print exercise to assess the base levels andformulate a plan for setting targets and actions.

    Tata Steel has implemented a variety of control measures to improve the working environment at theshop floor. The objective has been to create an atmosphere that respects both nature and community atthe same time. The Jamshedpur works is the first in the world to be conferred the SA 8000 for workconditions and improvements in workplace. All its operations have achieved the ISO-14001 certificationfor environment management.

    The Group currently participates in a voluntary agreement with the Dutch government regarding energyefficiency improvements over the period 2009 to 2012. The primary requirement of the agreement is anenergy efficiency improvement of 2% per annum, covering both energy used within the manufacturingprocess and energy saved across the product life cycle. The total energy efficiency improvement in 2010was 2.8%.

    AT Port Talbot, UK

    At Port Talbot in the UK, Tata Steel has inaugurated its BOS Gas Recovery Project, with the objectiveof reducing sites carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by some 2,40,000 tonnes per year and its dust

    (PM10s) emissions by 40 tonnes. The project has brought Port Talbot closer to realizing its ambition ofself-sufficiency in energy by reducing the plants demand for natural gas from the national grid.

    AT Thailand

    Tata Steel Thailand (TSTH) is highly dependent on the use of natural resources and has consequentlyincorporated energy management into its Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) activities and has saved1.8 million Baht per year on its electricity costs. TSTH is also focusing on Greenhouse EffectManagement, with a defined goal of restricting its CO2 emissions to 1.0 tonne per tonne of liquid steelproduced by 2012. Its other environment projects include 'The Big Cleaning Day' project; The Local

    Forest Rehabilitation project and 'The Steel Products for Environmental Preservation' project. The 'Save

    Our Earth' programme is a campaign against global warming.

    ENVIRONMENT INITIATIVES AROUND OPERATIONAL AREAS:

    Tata Steel focuses on strengthening agricultural capabilities of rural communities. Aid is offered tofarmers to increase productivity and to bring wastelands under cultivation. A large portion of Indiasland falls under the category of wasteland. To better utilise this land, Tata Steel has been partnering theNational Horticultural Mission since 2005. By 2009-10, almost 9,000 acres of land had been broughtunder cashew and mango plantations, benefiting 3,700 households from 129 villages in the EastSinghbhum district of Jharkhand. At the Joda East Iron Mine in Odisha, Tata Steel has also introduced ascientific rainwater harvesting system to check the depleting levels of ground water. A large storage-cum-percolation lake has been constructed at a favourable location to pool in the water from the vastcatchment area around the lake. This project will help increase the ground water levels of surroundingsettlements, including the Joda township.

    TSRDS has created and supported many 'Save Forest Groups' in Noamundi and Joda, to safeguardexisting forests and encourage local people to protect the forest as a valuable sustainable resource. TheCompany has trained groups of local people on the development of orchids, saplings and other forestproducts to encourage sustainable use of the forest as a source of livelihood, and thereby protect thehabitat.

    In its efforts to prevent environmental degradation, the Company has also encouraged the developmentof renewable and non-polluting sources of energy in the rural areas. This initiative will gradually reducedependence on firewood and slaughter of trees. While the Company operations constantly addressenvironmental sustainability, its rural development activities have also focused on improving the greencover in the area and better water management.

    WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY:

    This is a defining event in the Tata Steel calendar. The Company celebrates World Environment Day onJune 5 every year involving employees and the local communities. This is an occasion to celebrate theenvironment and its blessings through initiatives like mass sapling plantations and awareness buildingcampaigns and programmes among communities.

    Initiatives in SportsTata Steel has helped to create an atmosphere conducive to sports promotion and also created championswho have made the Country proud. In India, Tata Steel pays special attention to the sporting activitiesfor youth at the State and National levels. The Company has begun work for opening Feeder Centres at

    out-locations and in Greenfield project areas. Plans are in place for opening Excellence Centres inselected sports at various schools, which have the infrastructure.

    Tata Steel is in the process of extending its support in a formalised way to Hockey, the traditional sportof Jharkhand and the National sport of India. In addition, training of the Bhutan Archery Team is a partof the CSR activity of Taj Tashi, Bhutan.

    Tata Steel leads the effort by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to create "golden hopes" forIndia. It is the only Indian company to invest in world-class facilities, create academies and to maintainand manage international level arenas. Apart from setting up academies in various fields of sports, theinitiatives include the following facilities:

    The JRD Tata Sports Complex, an international stadium with an 8-lane polyurethane track andfootball field. The complex also houses facilities for handball, tennis, volleyball, hockey,basketball, boxing, table tennis, swimming and a modern gymnasium.

    The Keenan Stadium, that hosts international cricket matches and provides accommodationfacilities for visiting sportspeople.

    TATA FOOTBALL ACADEMY

    The objective of Tata Football Academy is to nurture and train budding footballers in the most scientificway with the sole purpose of improving the standard of Indian Football and be a nursery for producingoutstanding players for the Indian National Team.

    The Academy has excellent placement record for its cadets with the premier football clubs of India. Ithas nine training centers in different disciplines and it trains more than 500 community children in ayear.

Tata Steel ensures a strong community infrastructure

    to support the healthy operation of the business. Initiatives in this direction include:
