Casnovia WSCS Held Meeting Ihe W.S.C.S. of the Casnovia Methodist Church held its opening meeting Wednesday, Sept. 11„ with a birthday luncheon The ladies pre- pared their favor, te recipes which will be compiled into a cookbook. Marie and crossed into Canada on the new International bridge on Sunday and spent the night in Kal- kaska returning home Monday. Mrs, Claude Bailey underwent surgery in Blodgett hospital Satur- day. She is doing nicely. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Allison and Mr. and Mrs. John Vacaron visited Sam Verway and daughter, Mar- garet, in Muskegon Sunday. They also visited Grand Valley C611ege and saw the large new Grand Rapids pumping station on M-50. The next meeting of the South Sparta Club will be Octobcr 9 with Mrs. Gusty Goodfellow. Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Nordhof of Largo, Florida, left for their home Saturday after spending two months with relatives in Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ingersoll en- tertained Mr. and Mrs. Larry Pratt Saturday evening in honor of M r s . Pratt's birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Doan of Clearwater, Florida, spent Monday to Wednesday as guests of the Nor- man Davenports. The purpose of the meet- ing was to exchange ideas for an improved program of work in the local chapter. Six schools in Kent and Ottawa counties participated. Attending from Sparta was Ken Montgomery, John Jones, Tom Bliss and Terry Shears. The Sparta Chapter has 7t boys and 5 girls enrolled this year. Field trips so far includc-the study of dairy calves at Elwood Montgomery f~.rm, the Goodfellow Brothers farm to see hojjs raised in confinement on slatted floors, Arnold Schaefer, Jr., orchards tc learn cf the inspection of apples in the orchard and on the grading line. Sec- end place winners were a team of Harold Kent and Frank Merritt; and third place winners were Ray and Rich Holland. A canoe that capsized added to the excitement as the re- maining teams of Jim Drake and Bill Cochrane, Bill Brenner and Maurie Wood, Mr. and Mrs. Bill De- Vries, Mr. and Mrs. D. Smart, Ray Holland, Jr., and Tom Bigelow, Floyd Graham and Russ Fales, and Wally and Rog Doane battled for the remaining positions. CATHOLIC WOMEN SET MEET THURSDAY IN SPARTA The general meeting of the St. James Deanery of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women will be held in the Holy Family Church hall Thursday, Sept. 26.
