Welcome to the 2019 Straddie Salute Triathlon Festival! We are pleased that you can join us on North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah) for a great weekend or an action-packed day trip. This year we’ve put together a range of island activities for you to consider and I encourage you to take the time to experience the best that Straddie has to offer including playing a round on the beautiful Straddie golf course, trying your skills at sandboarding, relaxing with yoga on Cylinder Beach or enjoying a delicious outdoor breakfast Quandamooka-style. Thanks to all of our fantastic event partners for sharing our passion for the Straddie Salute, in particular Sealink/Stradbroke Ferries (foundation partners), Tourism & Events Queensland, Redland City Council and the Straddie Chamber of Commerce all of whose support makes the event possible. Thanks also to the Quandamooka people for sharing their beautiful island home with us. We hope that you have a great time on Straddie. Please come and say hi!. Cheers Steve Guise Event Director

Yura! Welcome to Quandamooka Country, home to the Straddie Salute. Quandamooka, the waters and islands of central and southern Moreton Bay and the coastal land and streams between the Brisbane and Logan Rivers, gave life to Quandamooka People for more than 20,0000 years, from a time beyond memory.

The three clans which make up the people of Quandamooka, People of the sand and sea, are the Nughi of Mulgumpin (now also known as Moreton Island) and the Nunukul and Gorenpul.

As you walk, run, ride or swim this land and sea, we urge you to pay respects to Quandamooka Elders past and present. Acknowledge Budjong Djara, Mother Earth.

On your triathlon trail on Minjerribah (now also known as North Stradbroke Island) you will tread the sands on the Eastern Beach. Being sand, these dunes move with time, but the Nunukul and Gorenpul people had many meals here. The shells and bones left after meals were gathered carefully and placed on top of each other. Over millennia, the piles of carefully placed shells and bones in these eating places became middens.

There are middens in the dunes you’ll pass and on the headlands. The headland now known as Main Beach Headland was used often for meals and gatherings. It is a significant midden.

Aboriginal people mil binang (observe listen) to nature. When the merigimpah (sea eagle) soars high in the sky over the sea we watch and see if they dive for fish. When the paperbark tree blooms in full we know there will be an abundance of honey. When the hairy caterpillars travel in long lines across the land we know the mullet will be moving up the coast.

We urge you too to observe and listen to Budjong Djara. Enjoy Minjerribah and Quandamooka Country. We wish you all the best in the triathlon events of the weekend. May the great spirits grant you the strength of yalingbila (whale) and the agility of buwangan (dolphin).

Message from the Minister for Tourism Industry Development The Hon Kate Jones MP

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Minjerribah for the Straddie Salute Triathlon Festival - certainly one of the most picturesque locations to swim, ride and run.

The Queensland Government supports the Straddie Triathlon and other key events because of the $800 million they contribute to our economy. Regional events mean regional tourism jobs – which are only created because you and thousands of other people have turned up to explore.

Over a thousand visitors will descend on North Stradbroke Island for this festival which brings together a range of events for all ages and abilities with classic Straddie favourites like sandboarding, beach yoga and an outdoor breakfast to create a truly memorable island triathlon experience. It also offers the unique challenge of surf, sand, coastal trails, stairs and both sealed road and 4WD trail on which to race. I wish all participants the very best of luck in this rewarding event.

Congratulations to all those involved in organising the event and I encourage visitors to ensure they make the most of the island’s spectacular and unique tourism experiences while here.

The Hon Kate Jones MP Minister for Tourism Industry Development

Ferry Information This year we are likely to see the largest field of competitors ever travel to the Straddie Salute so it’s important that you arrange your travel plans. Some ferry crossings have already sold out. Stradbroke Ferries are kindly offering competitors a 20% discount on variable fares or a $110 Day trip special (until sold out) To take this up go to www.stradbrokeferries.com.au and use the below codes: • 20% Vehicle Ferry Discount Promo code = salute19

• $110 Day Trip Promo code = SALDAY19 N.B $110 Day Trip only for standard cars on Sat 5.30am & 7am ferries across and 4pm & 5pm return

The vehicle ferry takes 50 mins from Cleveland to Dunwich and allow another 15 mins to Race HQ at Point Lookout. Alternatively you can walk on the water taxi with your bike and catch the Saturday 6.25am, 7.25am or 8.25am bus to Point Lookout. Bus fares are $5 per person & $5 per bike. Some people choose to cycle the 18km from the ferry to the race start but we think they’re mad! (it’s quite hilly).

Straddie Salute & Pure - Run leg The run leg is without doubt the most challenging leg of the event – but also the most spectacular. It includes road, gravel, bush trails, stairs, boardwalk and two beach sections. The 8.5km run starts with an uphill sealed road section, follows a gravel road down to Main Beach where you turn left to the Point Lookout Surf Club to link with some scenic trails. During the beach sections we suggest that you find the hard pack sand along the waters edge (or a bit higher up). Low tide is at 8.55am this year which is good news for our triathletes as the water will be receding throughout the event. WATER & AID STATIONS: Our friends at SOS Rehydrate are providing 4 water stations on course this year (at 3km, 4km , 5.5km & 7km) plus one at Event Base. Aid Stations will be at 5km & at Event Base. COURSE MARKING: Traffic Cones will be used to mark the route in public areas and on beaches. We will have event staff throughout the course but you will still need to pay attention to follow the cones and arrows as the path may not always be obvious. N.B If the course needs to be altered due to conditions on the day any changes will be communicated in the Safety Briefing. IMPORTANT:

–  All competitors MUST STAY ON THE MARKED COURSE AT ALL TIMES. If you are experiencing difficulties and require assistance, please notify one of the event marshals who will accompany you to the nearest evacuation point.

–  The run course will be marshaled but is not closed to the general public and therefore you

may encounter walkers, fishermen, beachgoers, tourists, animals etc. Please be respectful of all other trail users at all times.

FINISH LINE Once you’ve cross the line drop your timing anklet in the box and head straight for the Recovery Area where we’ll have SOS Rehydrate drinks, cold water and fresh fruit available.
