iii. Competition CategoRies:

“architecture” category

pavilion - mobile ideas

The objective of the Competition is to select and implement the concept of a mobile pavilion which will allow the OperaLab project for a number of artistic and intellectual activities - starting from the arrangement of exhibitions, through film screenings, ballet and opera performances, to concerts and discussion panels. The form of the pavilion should communicate an innovative nature of the project, combining many areas of arts, and to convey the values of identity of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera and BMW, creating a dialogue with the urban space. The open nature of the pavilion should provoke the audience for interactive use.

In accordance with the assumptions of the Competition for the design of a mobile exhibition pavilion, which will be the centre of OperaLab’s operations, it should be built from renewable materials and should have a flexible structure, which can be easily erected and dismantled. A creative reference to the architectural design of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera and its interpretation through modern forms of expression and the principles of innovative mobility – image core of the BMW brand – will be an important aspect of the design project. The design project of the mobile pavilion should comprise of components which can be easily arranged both in open urban space and indoors, with a particular focus on the space of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera. The pavilion’s structure should be based on a simple transformation enabling the implementation of various activities. The cost of the production of the pavilion should not exceed PLN 200,000.

functional and ideological assumptions

The pavilion should be characterised by timeless architecture which uses modern technological solutions. Due to the strategic role which the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera play in the Polish culture, the pavilion should relate to its structure, seeking dialogue in timeless solutions so as to combine, in an innovative way, the identity of the place with modern formal and technological solutions. The pavilion should be made up of separable components which, when put together, will create a complete structure, which will allow, however, for use in various ways (individual elements should have the functionality of internal exhibition components). The pavilion will be used outdoors in spring and summer. The pavilion should have a flexible structure that is easy to arrange and adapt to the needs of various cultural events. The minimum usable space is 150 m². The pavilion should be environmentally friendly. The pavilion should be technologically feasible. The costs of the production of the pavilion should not exceed PLN 200,000. The functional layout should provide for easily arrangeable space and a technical backoffice. The pavilion should allow for easy installation of multimedia facilities. One of the walls should serve as an interactive multimedia booth, access to which will be independent of the rest of the pavilion. As a concept, the pavilion should include a design project of the interior along with furniture which can be used in the open space in front of the pavilion. The project should include a layout of the electrical installation. The structure of the pavilion should be designed with the use of renewable materials. The pavilion should have facilities for people with disabilities.

“design” category

product for the teatr Wielki – polish national opera

The idea of creating a dedicated product line stems out of a strong inveteracy of the Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in its own identity and heritage, which is so characteristic for it, as well as BMW’s striving for innovation and dialogue with the arts. The product should foster relationships between the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera and the BMW brand, between the arts and individual mobility. It is important to create a whole environment for the project. Comprehensive identification and the product’s packaging should be taken into account.

The subject of the Competition will be to design two products from the product line signed by the OperaLab brand. The design projects should relate to the identity of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera and BMW. They should be inspired by their heritage in an innovative way, creating a modern product on a high aesthetic and functional level. Elements of the architecture, interior furnishings and the history of the Teatr Wielki – Polish National Opera building itself, as well as projects of the BMW Group will be the material for inspiration and a point of reference in designing the products. This will make it possible to establish a strong relationship with the identity of the place and a distinctive, unique and modern product. This correlation, apart from purely aesthetic advantages, constitutes a high educational value.
