CALL TO WORSHIP One: Shush, my heart – rest in the Lord. All: Close, my eyes – rest in the Lord. Thoughts – stop rushing. Body – relax! Oh my soul – be calm and quiet. Breathe in and out and be still. Big ideas and important jobs can wait. Yesterday’s hurts and tomorrow’s worries can drift off, for here and now we are held in the arms of God like a little child half asleep in her mother’s arms. ANNOUNCEMENTSCompassion Camp: Be Loved. Be Kind. Be You. During the month of August, Rock Spring will offer an intergenerational worship and “vacation Bible experience” series called Compassion Camp: Be Loved. Be Kind. Be You. On Sundays August 2, 9, 16, and 23, we will explore a different theme of Compassion during worship. On Mondays, the Congregation will receive a packet via email with opportunities for people of all ages to respond to the theme in a variety of ways. On Tuesday mornings, Ashley will offer a Zoom gathering designed for preschool and elementary-school aged children to engage with the theme through story, song, and games. On Friday mornings, we will offer a Zoom gathering for people of all ages to share their actions and experiences from the week, and to wonder and pray together. On Sunday, August 30 we will culminate the experience with intergenerational worship followed by a Zoom coffee hour. There will also be a congregation-wide art (coloring) project, and a variety of other “Compassion Camp” opportunities offered during the month.
Communion & Community Monday, August 3, 8:00 p.m. Zoom Link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82311150702 Our theme for the first week of Compassion Camp is “At the Table,” so join us from home as we gather virtually around the Largest Table for “Communion and Community.” Bring your own Communion elements -- bread and juice, crackers and wine, cookies and milk.... whatever works for you! We will share in a brief Communion service together, and then break into smaller groups for time to chat. We will conclude at 8:45 p.m. When you join the Zoom, you will be placed in a “waiting room” and see a message that “the host will admit you shortly.”
Backpacks for Refugee Students Welcoming the Stranger is collecting 75 backpacks for refugee children served by the Virginia Refugee Student Achievement Project. Whether schools open online or in person, these kids all live in very small apartments and need their own place to organize school supplies. A new backpack can both bring joy and help kids stay focused on learning. Get the food/beverage of your choosing and join Laura & Ashley online for conversation focused around the topic of compassion. We will use breakout rooms to facilitate smaller group conversations.
Faith and Democracy 2020’s Get Out The Vote Rock Spring willl join The Center For Common Ground’s Reclaim Our Vote campaign to send postcards aimed at increasing voter turnout among persons of color in states with histories of low voter turnout or voter suppression. The Center is a nonpartisan 501 (c)(3) organization. We will be providing postcards, stamps, voter names and addresses, and instructions that you can pick up at several locations and then write and mail the postcards from your home. We hope to begin this effort during the week of August 9 as part of Compassion Camp. More details to come next week. Contact Rick Hale at [email protected] with any questions.
Medical Debt Relief Did you know that $100 can become $10,000? When we give to medical debt relief through an effort of UCC churches, our contributions are multiplied. A group of DMV-area congregations have partnered with the nonprofit RIP Medical Debt to free families and individuals from the bondage of medical debt. Medical debt destroys the financial stability of large segments of America’s most vulnerable communities: the sick, the elderly, the poor, and veterans. It also targets the middle class, driving many families who are barely getting along into poverty. Medical debt isn’t the result of bad decisions. It’s a debt of necessity.
To join in Rock Spring’s efforts and the work of the wider church, contributions can be made to the church via check or online giving through the church’s website any time in July or August. Please indicate “medical debt relief” in the memo line.
