TRANSCRIPT
Last Saturday the Clifton School Friends Committee organised ‘Clifton Big Top’ for
parents. This was organised by the organising committee, chaired by Mrs Pentelow-
Boyle and Mrs Keyes. It was a super evening enjoyed by everyone who attended. My
thanks to the band ‘Something for the Weekend’, Olivia Lowry, the photographer, the
jugglers, fortune teller, unicycle riders, Mr and Mrs Clarke who were behind the bar,
Sarah the chef and Aga for the delicious food. Particular thanks to Mrs Pentelow-Boyle
and Mrs Keyes for a super evening. I know they are already working on the next social
event. Watch this space…
On Monday Kobe and his dad presented an assembly based on their travels around the
world from May - August. Using a huge blow up globe they told us all about the 9
countries they had visited, and the different types of transport they had used (including
the bullet train in Japan and the disco tuk tuk). It was a fascinating insight to their
travels and my thanks to Mr and Mrs Lewis for preparing such a wonderful talk.
On Wednesday 1M presented their assembly around the story of Robin Hood. It was a
stunning performance with great acting, singing and fabulous costumes. Well done to
all of the children in 1M and Miss Murray, Mrs Headlam-Morley and Mrs Hayden for
preparing them. It was also great to walk into school and discover that 3P had turned
into an Air Raid Shelter, a woodland had grown in 1S, and a mountain reserve centre
had emerged in 1M!
Year 2 have continued to get stunning messages and riddles from ‘the Firebird’.
Classroom environments are a focus this year on our School Improvement Plan and it is
wonderful to see how the children are inspired by the environments in which they learn
in.
In the afternoon I had the pleasure of working with the St Peter’s girls U18s team, who
were playing in the next round of the national competition. They played Ripon
Grammar School, Scarborough College, Ampleforth, Queen Margaret’s and Queen
Ethelburga’s in a league format. The standard of the hockey was very high and the girls
won the tournament convincingly, only conceding 1 goal. It is great to see school sport
flourishing.
Wednesday was also ‘World Teacher Day’ and I want to take this opportunity to thank
all of the staff who work so hard for our children at Clifton. Thank you.
On Thursday I had the opportunity to travel to Warwick to talk to teachers and leaders
about our approach to reading at Clifton. It was extremely well received and it was a
pleasure to talk about our school.
This week we had the first ‘Parent Consultation Meetings’ of the year. I hope you found
these useful and valuable. If you feel that you need more time to discuss any issues
with your child’s class teacher, please request a further appointment. If you require any
further follow-up please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Clarke or myself; we are always
happy to meet you. Furthermore next week we have our ‘Parent Forums’ on Thursday
13th October at 7:30pm and Tuesday 18th October at 08:30am. Please reply to the email
indicating whether you can attend.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Reception Get Messy
This week in Nursery we have been focusing on numbers. There has been lots of number play both inside and outside and we have been spotting numbers in the environment too. On a walk to the museum gardens we looked at car number plates and door numbers to see what we could find. Two children also had birthdays this week, so some numbers are very special to us and we counted the number of candles on the cakes that they brought in to share with us. What numbers can you spot around you at home too?
A forest has been growing in 1S –
As it gets bigger and takes over
more of the classroom we have
been exploring natural crafts,
materials and learning about
autumn and seasonal change. How
big will it be by next week? What
else will we find in there?
If anyone has a pig and would be happy to bring it into school next week, please could you let the school office know. Thanks
REQUEST FROM 3P:
2H loved their first drama workshop with Paul Birch
from Riding Lights Theatre this week! Paul worked on
the text of Masha and the Firebird, reading
descriptions from the book and encouraging the
children to ‘become’ parts of the story. Team work
and listening skills were
at the top of his agenda,
as well as learning to use
our bodies (without
sound….!) to create
mood and drama. Well
done, 2H- you worked
well! Now keep up those
listening skills!!
We imagined we had been evacuated to the countryside and explored the outdoors in Forest School area.
We made games, toys, dens and had a hot chocolate! Lots of fun was had during the afternoon and we
are very excited about visiting again next Monday afternoon.
This week in PSHEE with Mrs Clarke 1S and 1M found
out about our school charity Small Steps. After watching
a short film about the children who live on rubbish
dumps, they asked thoughtful questions and made
observations about what they had seen. The children
then worked together to create freeze
frames to show what they might be
doing and how it would feel to live and
work on a rubbish dump. All of the
children demonstrated real empathy
and understanding. They are already
full of amazing ideas to raise money at
school this year.
Fantastic!
Reception Get Messy Club! We have
been having a lot of fun every Friday in
Get Messy Club. So far we have made
shiny snails, gooey chocolate
crispies and last week we tried
our hand at watercolour
painting. Mrs Hall told us all
about being an artist and how
to use watercolours. We made
some beautiful detailed
paintings of shells. We can’t
wait to see what next week
brings!
Has anyone lost a Key? We have a gold chub key
on a key fob, in the Clifton School Office. The
key was found outside the front of school on
Tuesday of this week. Please call into the office
to claim it.
Thanks Caroline and Claire
‘40th Anniversary Cricket Club Christmas Dinner Dance
This year will be the 40th Anniversary of the School Cricket Club Christmas Dinner Dance to be held on Saturday 17
December. Details of the function and how to apply for tickets are contained in the attached flyer. Table of 10 are available
and note that this year cheques are payable to ‘St Peter’s School‘. The black tie event is an extremely enjoyable occasion
and an ideal way to kick off the Christmas festivities. The ticket price remains at £60 which includes all wine and
drinks. Parents, friends and staff of all 3 schools are welcome. We expect demand to be high and numbers are limited so
please book early to avoid disappointment.
We had a fabulous start to Monday
this week when we took a trip
around the world with Kobe and his
daddy. They brought a
big blow up globe and told us all about the
world trip that they went on this summer.
We loved hearing about the 9 countries
that they visited and seeing all of the
transport they used from the bullet train in
Japan to the disco tuk tuk. They told us
about the people they met, including a real
cowboy and the unusual food they tried.
No one fancied the duck brains! A huge thank you To Mr Lewis and Kobe for
an inspiring and entertaining talk. We all wanted to pack our bags and go on
our own world adventure!
ASSEMBLY Kobe’s World Trip
Our Harvest Festival collection starts next week. Alongside St Peter’s and St Olave’s, we are collecting for Carecent. Any
donations of the following items would be gratefully received:
Tinned meat which can be served cold – Ham, Spam, Corned Beef
Breakfast Cereals (all types)
Porridge Oats (not instant or Ready Break)
Baked Beans
Tinned Tomatoes (whole not chopped)
Sugar
Tinned Spaghetti
Brown Sauce
Non food items such as socks, hats, gloves, roll-on deodorant (no aerosols please), toothpaste, shower gel, disposable razors and shampoo
We would also be grateful for jeans (in sizes 30”, 32” and 34”) and other gents’ clothes (fleeces / jumpers / t-shirts).
Please place items on the table in the reception area.
Thank you.
As a continuation from our ‘dinner party’ on Thursday, RS visited St.Olaves and St. Peters dining rooms with the hope of learning just a little bit more about where our food comes from.
We looked at the similarities and differences, size, location and met people who work there. We met Chef David who
leads the cooking team at St.Olaves and Chef Richard who leads the team at St.Peter’s.
We had a very interesting and informative tour around St. Peter’s kitchen, taking a very close look at where all the food is prepared and where and how it is stored. We even managed to fit the entire class inside got the giant freezer!
A wonderful look behind the scenes for everyone.
Miss Murray and Mrs Headlam-
Morley are very proud of all of the
children in 1M who performed a
super assembly on Wednesday.
Great acting and fabulous costumes- a real
team effort!
Feelings Faces This week in PSHEE Reception did lots of
thinking about feelings. The children looked at
pictures and listened to music to help them to
describe different feelings. Then we went
outside to paint feelings faces using water. The
children talked about what makes them feel
happy, sad, angry, sleepy and scared. They also
thought about recognising what other people
are feeling. Then the sun came out and our
feelings faces disappeared, which reminded us
how quickly our feelings can change!

Helena lost her swimming costume on Tuesday after Swim Squad. It has her name in it, she also lost her blue goggles last Thursday; Margaux has lost her swim hat.—please keep a look out for them.
In 2S this week the children have been
continuing to work on the tricky
concept of describing arrays using
maths symbols. They have been
learning actions to help them to
remember which is a row and which is a
column. Drama with Paul Birch was
great fun. Here are some very scary

When was the last time you tried something new?
The ‘Try It Table’ arrived in RL this week and the
children have been trying mangos, avocados,
tomatoes, lettuce, kiwi fruit and peppers! Every time they
choose something to try they put a counter in their cup!
Chef Sarah popped in to visit us and see what a good job
we’re doing at trying lots of foods!
Fun with French Pen & Ink writing!
This week in French, Y3 have been trying old-fashioned nib & ink writing
as part of their French wartime topic. It was quite hard at first, especially trying to write on tiny 1mm line spaces
on the special French paper!! It certainly got quite messy but we learnt to use blotting paper and everyone
managed to write a short message in French. We ended up with lots of inky fingers and some beautiful French-
style writing!

YORK KARATE ヨーク松濤館空手道場
Clifton School Karate Club Dear Parents, I hope your child is enjoying the karate classes so far and are looking forward to the rest of the term. Many of the children are very excited about their training but they usually have two questions when they first start:
When am I going to get a suit?
When will I get my first belt? On the first question, it is entirely down to you as to when you wish to buy them their suit. I sell them for £20 and can bring one to class for them. I will also make sure that they get the right size suit. It is important that the suit fits correctly and is the correct type (different martial arts have different kinds of suits). Cash is fine as payment. On the second question, we hold gradings at the end of every school term. They take place on a Sunday at Fulford Secondary School. Every child who has attended the majority of classes throughout the term will be prepared for the exam. The cost of grading is £20 and this includes the next belt. The next grading course is with England squad coach Sensei Matt Price on the 11th December 2016. Registration will be available from November via the website www.yorkkarate.net. In order to grade, they will need to become members of the Japan Karate Shoto Federation and the English Karate Federation. Please see attached form for details of how to apply for their karate license. Any questions, please feel free to contact me on the details below. Regards Simon Flint Instructor York Karate
