In the excitement around the country of the Great British Bake off, we will be hosting our very own Great Clifton Bake off on Monday 16th October. The theme for this years’ bake off is fruit and vegetables, we would like you to bake a cake either using fruit and vegetables or decorate the cake/s to look like a fruit or vegetable – I’m sure this is a challenge you will all relish. There will be prizes for all age groups and it would be great if everyone could enter. At the end of the day there will be a café in the dining room where the cakes, biscuits and other goodies can be purchased. All monies raised will go towards our school charity, Water Aid. Any remaining food will be donated to the homeless. St Peter’s Art Department has organised a competition for all the children in school. Mrs Hall spoke to all of the children in assembly, explaining the theme ‘Blue’. A flyer has been sent home today to all of the children with all the relevant details. Today we had a coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Charity, many thanks for coming along and my sincere thanks to Mrs Rigby for organising this fabulous event. Next week we will be holding parents’ consultation evenings at school. This is an opportunity to meet your child’s class teacher to discuss how your child has settled into school and their progress. Mrs Clarke and I will be available during the evenings if you would like to speak to us. In After School Care we have found many entrepreneurs who have created a stall selling loom band bracelets and bookmarks for our School Charity, Water Aid. Thank you to all parents who have supported this project that has been entirely dreamt up and lead by our children. School Council have been talking about the playground. On Monday they will be leading the assembly on the theme of ‘happy playtimes’. They have also chosen playground equipment including a giant chess board set for all to use at playtime. Thank you School Council. I have been away in Edinburgh this week attending the annual IAPS Heads Conference. This enabled me to attend a number of inspiring presentations by keynote speakers including; Dr Barry Hymer, Kat Schofield, Prof Geraint Jones, Dr Ben Garrod, Mungo Dunnett, Vicky Pryce, Dr Harvey Lewis and Julie Robinson. It also provided an excellent opportunity to discuss educational and leadership ideas with other fellow heads. Just a reminder, as Mr Maycock mentioned last week, as it is exeat weekend
for St Peter’s and St Olave’s, there will be no swimming for Reception children
tomorrow. Swimming lessons for Reception will resume next Saturday 7th
October.
I hope you all have a relaxing weekend. Best wishes

St Peter’s Art Department have asked us to join in with their
postcard competition again this year. Children who contributed
to this event, open to all three schools, will be invited to the
private view in the gallery, in the Art Department. This is a very
special opportunity and one which everyone who entered last
year very much enjoyed. The theme this year is ‘Blue’ and I
have introduced the idea of this in Monday’s assembly.
Postcards to work on and a flyer will come home today- please
start thinking about anything, abstract or realistic on the theme
of blue….any materials can be used.
Please bring in NAMED postcards by Monday November 6th.
The private view is Friday 17th November.
Mrs Hall
2H have been going bonkers with
conkers this week! We have been
learning how to make arrays in
multiplication and we went off to Forest
School on Monday afternoon to explore
our learning outside. We used conkers,
conker shells, leaves and twigs to make
arrays with 2M and everyone was very
impressed with how quickly we learnt
and applied the concept. As they say in
Number Crew - ‘Hooray, it’s an array!’
This week was rather exciting and the lolly pop sticks went down a treat, they looked so amazing and pretty! I love BLING! Thank you all for coming and see you next week. I will find a great Halloween craft activity but don't worry, it won't be a scary one!
Fionn has been inspired by our
school charity Water Aid. He made
some loom bands to sell to his
family and he raised £3.66. Well done
Fionn for being so
resourceful and for
showing our
school value of
compassion.
‘K’ is for Kicking!
RS coordinated Literacy and Physical
Development this week during their phonics
lesson! The children kicked footballs around,
between and through cones practicing their
gross motor control. Being a part of ‘Team K’
was really good fun, what a lot of
energy RS have!
This week in 2M we have been continuing our
work on AMAZING adjectives! We went on a
mini adventure around our WONDERFUL campus
and chose one object each to describe. We then
stepped into the role of our item and played
What am I? This involved us describing our
object using lots of JUICY adjectives and asking
our friends to guess who we were! We even got
Mrs Hulmes to play and thankfully, she guessed correctly!
In other news, we have been learning the new concept of arrays in Maths.
We took our knowledge with us down to Forest School and worked in pairs
to create lots of number sentences using the resources around us.
Finally, to end our busy week, we went on a trip to the Yorkshire Museum
today. We had a fantastic time and enjoyed expending our knowledge and
exploring some areas of the Vikings we haven't yet
learnt in school!

This week Year 3 went on the Hogwarts Express to re-create the journey that Harry and his friends took to
Hogwarts. This gave us a chance to really feel what Harry and his friends felt on the journey. Back at school
we read Robert Louis Stevenson’s poem ‘From a Railway Car’. Then we used our journey on the train to
inspire us to find adventurous adjectives to use to write cinquain poems for National Poetry Day. Do you
know that a cinquain poem has 5 lines and follows a set pattern? Next week you can come and read our
poems which will be displayed in our classrooms. We also met a Hogwarts student who told us all about life
at Hogwarts and how the station was used in the film. As we are planning to develop our IT skills and make
mini films using our brand new green screens later in the term we were very interested to find out that
green screens had been used in Harry Potter. We have lots of ideas and can’t wait to write scripts and
become film makers.
We have also been busy in Maths this week exploring adding multiples of 10 and making sure that we really
understand and can describe what happens to the digits and why. We especially like working with big
numbers!

The children in Year 3 were able to choose to take on a role as
either a Helping Hand or as a Charity Ambassador. As the oldest children at
Clifton this helps them to develop leadership skills and take on responsibilities in our
school community. The Helping Hands will begin their new role on Monday when they
will help at playtimes, make sure everyone has fun, look after the younger pupils and they
also help to look after ‘scrap’ and some new playground equipment which will arrive soon.
The Charity Ambassadors will lead our charity events and take on different roles to help
raise money and awareness of our school charity Water Aid. I am really looking forward
to working with all of our wonderful Year 3 volunteers.
Mrs Clarke
We have been very excited this
week about our temporary new
member of the class… Squidgy! A
little hamster who is helping us to
learn all about how to care for
animals in preparation for our new
class pet. The children have loved
looking after him and enjoy
watching him exercise in his ball
around the classroom.
In Maths this week we have been
focussing on money. We have been
getting familiar with the different
coins and their values. We have used Numicon to help us
understand that £1 is the same as 100 pennies. We are beginning to
pay for items in the role play area and outdoor area.
In English we have been preparing questions for our
upcoming Pets at Home visit. The children
have had some super ideas and are
beginning to use question marks.
Jess Oxley’s shoes are missing,
Sofia Brook has lost her school
coat and Ali Bulut’s jumper is
also missing—please look out
for these items.
Thank you.
This week in the Nursery we have
been talking about our families and our homes.
We enjoyed drawing our families and building homes using blocks.
Learning new songs all about families.
Building homes and houses in the workshop.
Making models of buildings and homes.
We have used Google maps to find out where we live and where we are from.
On Monday, RB read the story of The Tomtes who selflessly help care for their environment and we also learnt about
our school superhero Rita Resilience who never gives up.
Following this, we decided we could work together to make the top playground a better place and a “bit more shiny”. RB swept, scrubbed, washed and rinsed the whole mud kitchen and all its utensils!
We also carried logs and arranged them in a raised flower bed for small world play along with planting
grass seed in another. We sent an email to RS and Nursery explaining our new play areas.
Not one person complained or thought about giving up! Brilliant collaboration and resilience RB.
