Lafarge and Flame in a Concrete PartnershipWorld renowned building materials supplier, Lafarge, and Flame, Zambia’s cutting-edge, full-service, award-win-ning general construction company, have developed a partnership to give the Zambian construction industry its first ever mobile batch plant concrete solution, replacing the traditional concept of centralized batching plant and ready mix transit mixer delivery with the FlameCrete Mobile Batch Plant/Volumetric Mixer concept. The partnership will kick off in June when two mobile batch plant units from Kimera of Italy will arrive in the country to begin a process which Lafarge will not only supervise but for which it will also supply all the concrete ingredients – sand, aggregate and cement. Flame (Zambia) Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Salama says that the new partnership will provide contractors with the best concrete quality and supply from June 2014, the start of operations “We shall start the operation in June with the commissioning of two units. More units will be added on a monthly basis until full capacity to cover Lusaka and the Copperbelt is reached by December 2014 . Currently, contractors and end-users suffer from poor time delivery, poor design mixes, poor concrete workability due to transit mixers carrying wet concrete being delayed in traffic, and they most probably do not receive the quantity of supplies paid for. The technology underpinning this Lafarge/FlameCrete partnership will provide the Zambian market with fresh workable concrete with the right design mix and in the correct quantities since, rather than receiving transported premixed concrete, our volumetric mixers/computer controlled mobile batch plants will carry and deliver the materials in dry form and water will be added on site for on-site mixing,” Mr. Salama said.

In addition to the mobile batch plant technology, the operation will be backed by Lafarge’s newly-commissioned state-of-the-art concrete testing laboratory in Chilanga, where design mixes will be formulated and tests will be performed to ensure that the properties and strengths of each delivery are on a par with Lafarge’s celebrated international standards.

Progress in Partnership

Because concrete is probably the most important structural element in construction, concrete testing is critical in the construction industry. Testing is mandatory in most regions of the world, and construction companies must provide documentation of their testing and results at the request of governments or consultancy agencies. It is hoped that these safe standards will be adopted and put into Law in Zambia in order to protect the Zambian public from unsafe and dangerous structures mushrooming all over the country.

Priority access to Lafarge cement using various cement strengths and grades, as well as priority access to the company’s aggregates, will result in uniform consistent supply.

“The computer controlled mixing operation installed in every mobile batch plant, backed by the Lafarge concrete testing facility and technical know-how and single source of raw materials, will guarantee high quality and consistent supply all the time,” says Mr. Salama, explaining that the mobile batch plant concept will ensure that the exact quantities ordered are delivered.

The advantages of the mobile batch plant concept against the traditional centralized system are numerous, as illustrated by benchmarking, which identifies why Lafarge and FlameCrete opted for this new technology for the Zambian market as a solution to the current market grievances.

Multi-Nationality On-Site Skill Transfer ProgramFrom our first day on site, our policy has been to expose and transfer knowledge to our local artisans and workmen to ensure enhanced, efficient and finer methods of construction, through hand-in-hand interaction with artisans and instructors from different parts of the world. This approach has so far achieved the successful training of more than 1000 Zambians, and continues to bear fruit.

We take pride in having trained more than 400 local workmen during the Radisson Blu project and more than 400 during the Robert Makasa University project in Muchinga Province, Northern Zambia.

Empowerment through Self-Employement ProgramA positive outcome of Flame’s Multi-Nationality On-Site Skill Transfer Program is that it has encouraged many employees to choose to break away from the firm and return as self-employed entrepreneurs, as sub-contractors.

This program extends grants to cover the registration fees of business names and companies and welcomes back ex-employees as subcontractors and gives priority to their engagement. Higher rates are awarded to these new entrepreneurs to help them build their working capital. Further Your EducationKnowledge is power: Flame takes pride in giving back to our community by providing education opportunities both within and outside the organisation

Under our Further Your Education Program, Flame provides fully-paid scholarships at the University of Zambia, Copperbelt University, Zambia Centre for Accountancy Studies and several vocational schools to a number of staff as well as students in need.

The Common Law of Business Balance There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and those who consider price alone in selecting a supplier are that person’s lawful prey.

It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
