• Field Development consists of identifying and defining all components required to develop and operate an offshore oil & gas field. It is a multi-disciplinary task, requiring both technical and commercial skills, including subsurface, drilling, facilities, project, operations and commercial competences.

• Successful Field Development requires multi-disciplinary, creative, conceptual, and system design skills in combination with selective use of analytical tasks and technical competences.

• Field Development activities may occur at the earliest stage with the identification of exploration blocks. In this instance development scenarios and costs are required to support the license bid or farm-in opportunity.

• More typically Field Development commences immediately following exploration success where OPCOs commence the Assess phase of project development and can continue through to FID, depending on the client and size of the project.

Description

JOGMEC are planning for an extended well test of Methane Hydrate production from a formation 300m to 500m beneath the seabed (1,000m water depth) in the Eastern Nankai Trough in Japan in 2015. The large potential reserves (up to 40 Tcf) have been extensively studied, but never subject to continuous production testing in an offshore deepwater environment.

Peritus Scope

Peritus led a study to demonstrate the feasibility, with cost & schedule estimates of utilizing a converted Offshore Support Vessel (OSV), modified to host a well test spread, designed for the relatively low flows of water & gas expected from the well test.

The focus of the initial study was to identify a suitable type of OSV & identify the conversions needed to allow a single vessel to act as the offshore installation vessel (subsea infrastructure & riser) as well as host a well test spread & keep station by dynamic positioning for an extended period .

Peritus were involved later in more detailed engineering of other offshore tests of a similar type.

Description

Woodside is the operator of the Browse gas field, which is located approximately 440 km North-Northwest of Broome on the northwest shelf of Australia. In the Phase 1 development, Woodside plans to install Dry Tree Units at Calliance and Brecknock, in water depths of about 600m. Woodside selected MODEC International as one of two companies to perform the Front End Engineering Design (FEED) for two Dry Tree Units. MODEC will utilize its proprietary Tension Leg Platform (TLP) design for the Browse DTUs. Steel Catenary Risers (SCR) will be used to export wet gas and condensate from the TLPs to a shallow water platform for further processing, and to transport MEG lines from the shallow water platform to the TLPs. The SCRs range from 6-inch to 24-inch in diameter. Some of the risers are CRA-cladded, to manage highly corrosive internal fluids. These risers are extremely challenging to design due to a combination of design conditions including large diameter, shallow water, high temperature, corrosive fluids and severe tropical cyclones and persistent swell loading regarding riser fatigue.

Peritus Scope:

Peritus has been working with MODEC to provide design and engineering support for the SCRs. Peritus’ scope covers all aspects of the SCR design and engineering, including mechanical design, strength, fatigue, interference assessment, installation analysis, Engineering Criticality Assessment (ECA), design of riser top termination joints and SCR monitoring system. Peritus has been working on the following phases of Browse:

• Coaching Phase of Delivery Competition

• FEED Phase of Delivery Competition

• Phase III

• EPCi Bid Preparation

• Phase IV

Quantitative Risk Assessment (QRA):

• QRA was performed for the nearshore sections (0-200m water depth) of the Giza-Fayoum and Raven gas trunk-lines, MED pipelines and umbilicals

• QRA focused on hazards of dragged anchors, sunken ships, and fishing hazards.

• Objective was defined to estimate the likelihood of failure (LOF) for general hazards. Additional objectives were defined to evaluate alternative of buried MED pipelines between the parallel gas trunklines or piggyback on the trunklines.

• Extensive uncertainties existed with respect to trawl gear characteristics and locations favored by ships traffic and anchoring frequency of vessels.

• Innovative technique of Probability Bounds Analysis (PBA) was utilized computing upper and lower bounds on risk.

Description

The Lady Nora oil discovery, operated by Woodside Energy Ltd (WEL) is one of a number of hydrocarbon pools in the Greater Western Flank (GWF) area to the south west of the Goodwyn A Platform (GWA). The Lady Nora oil field contains an estimated 20 to30 MMbbls recoverable reserves of 28 API oil in a water depth of approximately 80 metres and is located approximately 40 km from GWA.

Peritus Scope

The reference case for the development of the oil field is to produce the reserves via 2 subsea production wells to a leased disconnectable FPSO / Production Unit. The produced gas is to be either exported to the GWA platform via the existing Echo / Yodel pipeline or reinjected for later recovery as part of the broader GWF gas development. If exported, a new 12” gas export pipeline will be installed from the Lady Nora production facility to the Echo / Yodel pipeline, a length of approximately 14 km.

The short field life of the Lady Nora development of ~4 years drives a low cost development which in turn steers the project toward a leased production facility. The design rates are maximum oil of 50 kbpd of oil production, 30 kbpd of water and 150 MMscfd dry gas export.

Peritus partnered with Pöyry Energy for the performance of the Concept Definition Studies with Peritus hosting the integrated project team and providing project management, subsea, pipeline, riser and marine / naval architecture services. Pöyryprovides project controls, process, flow assurance and facilities discipline input as required. Peritus also provides a key role in advising WEL in the strategy for engaging the FPSO / Production Unit market.

The jumper spools have a design temperature of 100°C. All spools are designed to ASME B31.8 and DNV RP F112 with fatigue design to DNV RP C203.

At the OGPP Tee tie-in location Peritus designed a 20 tonne snag resistant Tee protection structure that was located and supported by 2 separate portal frames that straddled the OGPP and fixed to the seabed via grouted rock bolts. The OGPP Tee was analysed by FE method to ensure that the tie-in loads were not overstressing the Tee.
