iSWAY-FC®COMPACT PRESSURIZATION UNIT INTENDED FOR SMOKE AND HEAT CONTROL SYSTEMS

6.0.1

Intended use and types of the unitsThe iSWAY-FC® series compact pressurization units (pressure differential kits in accordance with EN 12101-6) are comprehensive technical solutions designated to overpressure protection of both vertical and horizontal escape routes in the various buildings in case of fire. All iSWAY-FC® series units are equipped with predictive algorithm regulators which provide automatic adjustment of the operating parameters to the dynamic changes of the ambient e.g. wind speed and direction, air temperature and internal parameters e.g. different evacuation scenarios. Capacity of the air supply axial flow fan is continuously adjusted by means of the Danfoss frequency inverter with the FIRE MODE function which shall be applied in smoke and heat control systems.

Correspondent iSWAY-FC® units can be equipped with dedicated automatics enabling to protect of certain spaces depending on the local requirements in the building.

Due to the applied control system and wide range of accessories iSWAY-FC® series units can be used to protect number of

spaces with different cubature e.g. staircases, lift-shafts etc. Moreover due to the compact design and structure iSWAY-FC® series compact pressurization units can be assembled almost anywhere inside the building e.g. technical floors, roof level or ground level.

Technically iSWAY-FC® series units are comprehensive technical solutions for overpressure protection against smokiness of escape routes in buildings in case of fire. Thanks to a compact design and a wide range of versions this units can be installed almost anywhere in the building, whereas varying performance of offered fans provides the required level of pressure gradient and normative velocity of air outflow from the protected spaces.

Units from the iSWAY-FC® series are designed to produce the set value of overpressure within the space of staircase, shaft of rescue elevator or in a system of separate elevator shafts (each with its own air supply point in reference to the fire floor. It is also possible the use iSWAY-FC® units to control the pressure in the air supply duct.

1. Complex pressurization systems shall be fitted with Operating Conditions Monitoring Device (MSPU) with Control Board (TS) to enable monitoring, visualization of the system and manual key-protected override switches. TS and MSPU are usually installed in the BMS room.

2. Maximum length of the pressure differential measurement tubes shall not exceed 12 m.3. Application of single injection system shall be every time validated taking into consideration building architecture and

key design objectives e.g. allowable pressure differences.4. iSWAY-FC®D type pressurization unit can be interconnected with max. 32 P-MACF remote differential pressure

sensors using single FireBus® loop.5. Each remote P-MACF sensor has to have Fire Alarm Signal (FAS) provided. Depending on the location of the fire

pressurization unit communicates with the sensor closest to the fire floor and neglect other readings in order to enable possibly fast operation.

6. For fire-fighting lobbies (vestibules) equipped with electronic adjustable air transfers remote sensors P-MACF are replaced with MAC-D-MIN regulators controlling volume control dampers located in the lobby and corridor. Proper functioning of such system requires to receive Fire Alarm Signal (FAS) to trigger the system and enable measurement of pressure difference between the lobby and reference (e.g. corridor).

7. iSWAY-FC® type units intended for pressurization of the lobbies with electronic adjustable air transfers or more than one lift shaft pressurized by a single unit (individual pressure difference regulation) are by default fitted with factory automatics type “D” and marked as iSWAY-FC®-D.

8. iSWAY-FC® type units intendetd for stairwell pressurization where reversible flow is required are by default fitted with factory automatics type “R” and marked as iSWAY-FC®-R.

Use of P-MACF sensors and FireBus® loop communication protocol enable to save space and limit investment and operating costs by reducing total length of the data transmission cables and capacities of the air supply fans – air supply rates are precisely controlled and automatically adjusted to current needs. Application of electronic adjustable air transfers enables to save space and improve aesthetics by reducing required size of air transfer openings (compensative air supply for smoke exhaust).

Failsafe mode In case of communication loss with the pressure sensor regulator switches automatically into safe emergency control mode (failure mode) regulation based on pressure measurement inside the air supply duct. Desired pressure inside the air supply duct shall be determined experimentally using the results of on-site measurements.

Installation of the unitsTo provide maximum flexibility for the designers all iSWAY-FC® type units are delivered as a self-supporting structures with fan installed on shock absorbers enabling to be installed in any position (horizontal, vertical) depending on the local requirements on the site. However to guarantee comfort of the installers and maintenance crews it is recommended to define expected assembly position of the unit (1 or 2) upon placing an order.

In case when defining final assembly position of the unit is unknown factory automatics will be installed as per default mounting position (1).

Example of the assembly position.

After defining assembly position drain holes plugs o14 shall be removed from the bottom profiles of the unit’s casing. M8 Layout of M8 mounting holes has been set in such a manner to enable any mounting position of the unit (see Scheme 12.). In case of vertical assembly special supporting foot is required which is not available from the range of additional equipment offered by SMAY.

Measurement, monitoring and visualization For proper functioning of the iSWAY-FC® type unit it is indispensable to enable appropriate air intake, and provide all electrical connections (guaranteed power supply, data transmission cables, fire alarm system inputs, connections between the unit and TSS or TS and MSPU). Moreover all pressure measurement tubes shall be unobstructed and properly connected (pressure difference between the protected space e.g. stairwell and reference e.g. corridor). If pressure regulation is carried out basing on the measurements taken inside the air supply duct it is indispensable to connect appropriate pressure measurement tubes and probes (duct pressure measurement probe shall be installed on the straight part of the air supply ductwork.

Installed components of the control system P-MACF, MAC-D-MIN, MAC-LINK, T-MACF shall be interconnected with the iSWAY-FC®-D(R) unit by means of Local FireBus® loop communication bus.

In case when total number of P-MACF sensors dśsn’t exceed 4 per unit power supply is provided through the FireBus®, otherwise external power supply 24VDC shall be provided.

For differential pressure sensors operating the lobbies it is indispensable to address every sensor providing Fire Alarm Signal (FAS) to every sensor. In case of fire pressurization iSWAY-FC® unit communicates with the sensor located in the lobby at the fire floor.

For buildings where total number of units dśsn’t exceed 6 (without lobbies) manual control and monitoring are provided with Control-Signal Board TSS in appropriate version TSS-1 ÷ TSS-6 depending on number of units.

For more complex pressurization systems where involving number of units it is recommended to apply Control Board (TS) together with Operating Conditions Monitoring Device (MSPU) located at the fire brigades access level possibly close to the entrance (e.g. BMS room).

Control-Signal Board (TSS)

Control - Signal Board (TSS) is intended to enable basic manual controls and monitoring of the proper functioning of the units. Board is fitted with pressure difference value displays, key-protected manual override switches and indicators. Override switches are used to enable to start the unit, reset the failure, smoke detector, Fire Alarm Signal (FAS) and, depending on system structure, to control Twin-Air-Intake modules. Indicators show information on fire alarm signal, major failure and detection of the smoke inside the air supply unit.

TSS dimensions:

1. TSS-1 – 205x340 x 188 mm.2. TSS-2 – 305x340 x 188 mm.3. TSS-3 – 305x340 x 188 mm.

Operating Conditions Monitoring Device (MSPU)

This device is an additional component which is recommended for complex pressurization systems and enables to control data transmission lines and monitor status and condition of the key components of the SAFETY WAY® type pressurization system. MSPU device shall be installed together with the TS Control Board. MSPU device consists of the number of components enclosed in one steel casing painted in RAL3000. Key component of the MSPU is an industrial computer with touch screen fitted in the front panel enabling to activate different features of the monitoring system. MSPU device is used to display operating parameters of the key components with individual graphics developed (including number of units, layout of protected spaces and other components depending on the system’s structure). In general MSPU device enables to detect and locate any possible failure of the system and reduce time required for periodic inspections and maintenance of the pressurization system.

Photo 1. General view of the Operating Conditions Monitoring Device MSPU.

Dimensions of the MSPU: 500 x 650 x 250 mm.

Control board (TS)

Control Board (TS) is always installed in the building along with MSPU at the fire brigades access level. In the front panel of the board light indicators of board power supply, Fire Alarm Signal (FAS) and general failure are fitted. Board is also fitted with overall switch enabling manual activation of the units which starts all units simultaneously. Since each unit can be individually stopped from the TS board it is also possible to start selected units or group of units. For each unit board also enables to reset fire alarm signal resulting in deactivation of the unit. All units after being triggered with fire alarm signal work independently and require manual stop. This manual switch can be also used to deactivate the unit. For security reasons this switch is key-protected. For each unit board is fitted with additional switch to lock the smoke sensor providing control

signal for the Twin-Air-Intake module. This switch has two different functions depending on if the unit is equipped with Twin-Air-Intake module. In such case once smoke is detected inside the unit air intake openings are automatically switched. Alternatively for units without Twin-Air-Intake module detection of smoke inside the unit results in automatic stop of the unit. Smoke detection signal can be neglected using this switch and the unit remains active. Information on smoke detection inside the unit is displayed on the MSPU device located near the board.

Remote differential pressure sensor (P-MACF)

P-MACF is a digital pressure differential transducer fitted with one differential pressure sensor and connector providing power supply and data transmission over two Local FireBus® channels. Built in, internal microprocessor system performs linearity correction while taking into account, inter alia, operating temperature, and characteristics entered at the time of calibration. High accuracy and stability of measurement is ensured by the use of sophisticated calibration equipment and long-term aging process of the elements of the device. The converter is designed to measure air pressure with small degree of contamination.

Depending on desired function and measuring range two different variants of the sensors P-MAC and P-MACF can be distinguished:

• P-MAC +/-250 – measuring range: -250 ÷ 250 Pa – pressure difference between protected space and the reference – for iSWAY-FC®,

• P-MAC +/-600 – measuring range: -600 ÷ 600 Pa – pressure difference between protected space and the reference or inside the air supply duct – for iSWAY-FC®,

• P-MACF +/-250 – measuring range: -250 ÷ 250 Pa – pressure difference between protected space and the reference – for iSWAY-FC®-D(R),

• P-MACF +/-600 – measuring range: -600 ÷ 600 Pa – pressure difference between protected space and the reference or inside the air supply duct – for iSWAY-FC®-D(R).

Remote differential pressure sensors are used in pressure differential systems in below cases:

• In case when iSWAY-FC® type units and pressurized spaces

are apart and thus length of the pressure measurement tubes exceeds 12 m. Then P-MACF sensor is connected to iSWAY-FC®-D unit with Local FireBus® communication loop. In case of the communication loss iSWAY-FC®-D unit gśs to the fail-safe mode when pressure difference regulation is provided using internal P-MACF sensor of the unit or else fixed setting of the regulator.

Dimensions of the P-MACF: 180x122x90 mm.

I/O adapter (MAC-LINK)

I/O adapters type MAC-LINK are intended to enable extend basic functions of the pressurization systems. This adapters use existing and available architecture of the FireBus® communication loop. MAC-LINK adapters are continuously monitored and thus any failure is immediately detected. Depending on actual needs adapters can be fitted with desired number of inputs and outputs.

Family of the MAC-LINK adapters can be divided into three basic groups listed below:

• MAC-LINK adapter with maximum 4 inputs and 4 outputs, • MAC-LINK-I adapter with 8 inputs, • MAC-LINK-O adapter with 8 outputs.

Maximum number of MAC-LINK adapters installed in single Local FireBus® loop is 8.

ConstructionCasing

Body of the unit is made as of aluminum profiles with steel sheet profiles insulated with polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam. To enable access for servicing and maintenance side panels are removable.

Fan – Frequency Inverter

Fan powered by a frequency inverter supplies air into the protected space. In order to enable sharp changes of air supply rate all fans are fitted with breaking resistors taking energy out of the system while decreasing fan’s capacity.

Shut-off damper

In order to separate protected space from the outside (cold, dust and other pollutants) during normal use of the building all iSWAY-FC® type units are fitted with thermally insulated, motorized dampers installed at the air intake side. Shut-off damper’s actuator is equipped with the return spring to increase overall system reliability. In case of power failure (e.g. caused by cable damage), the shut-off damper switches to the fully open position assumed to be safe.

Duct smoke detector

All iSWAY-FC® type units by default are fitted with duct smoke detectors installed inside the unit’s casing. Depending on the programmed action upon smoke detection unit can be automatically switched off or else smoke detection alarm can be indicated.

Pressure measurement tubes connection terminals

Pressure measurement tubes terminals are in the boxes installed directly on the unit’s casing and marked as (+) for pressure in the protected space and (-) for the reference.

Regulator MAC-FC(R)

MAC-FC(R) regulator is microprocessor electronic device intended for precise control of the pressure difference in accordance with the requirements listed in EN 12101-6 standard. It ensures full compliance with the requirements of the paragraph 5.4.2.5. “Variable supply fans or dampers controlled by pressure sensors shall not be used unless the system can achieve over 90 % of the new air supply requirements within 3 s of a door being opened or closed.”

MAC-FC(R) regulator adjusts automatically capacity of the fan by means of the frequency inverter depending on an actual value of pressure difference. Setting is automatically set depending on the status of its outputs and displayed interconnected device.

Main switch

The main switch is used to disconnect power supply of the unit for maintenance or in case of an unpredicted emergency.

Power Supply - Control Cabinet (SzA-FCZ)

SzA-FCZ cabinet is a component that power supplies iSWAY-FC® unit’s components and controls the adjustable volume control dampers using the information from MAC-FC(R) regulator. On the cabinet’s casing „Power supply control 3x400VAC and 24VDC” information is displayed whereas inside the cabinet 24VDC power supply equipment is installed. Additionally all power supply outputs for system’s components are protected.

Differential pressure sensor P-MAC or P-MACF

P-MAC and P-MACF are digital pressure differential transducers fitted with one differential pressure sensor and connector providing power supply and data transmission over Local FireBus® channels.

Two different variants of the sensors P-MAC and P-MACF were described in paragraph: Measurement, monitoring and visualization.

Anti-Frost System

If required iSWAY-FC® type units can be fitted with an infrared heater in order to prevent shut-off damper from freezing (cold outside condition). In this case all seals of the in the shut-off damper are made from special material which remains flexible at low temperatures. Infrared heater is activated depending on the air temperature inside the unit by means of the thermostat. In order to increase heat absorption and direct heat transfer internal surfaces of the unit operate as screen and damper is painted in black.

Principle of operationControl objective is precise control of pressure difference between the protected space e.g. stairwell, lobby, lift shaft and the reference (overpressure within protected space). The inverter supplied from the power network sends a control signal to the fan motor alternating voltage with frequency inverter in the range 0 to 50 Hz. This enables precise control of the motor rotational speed i.e. fan capacity. The inverter receives a control signal from the regulator, which corresponds to the frequency of 0 to 50 Hz. Control strategy is based on precise regulation of actual pressure difference measured continuously with P-MAC(F) sensor e.g. 50 Pa. Control objective is in general reached with automatically adjusted capacity of the air supply fan taking into account actual leakage of the protected space (including door open/closed). It is assumed that overpressure of 50 Pa is considered as sufficient to hold back smoke and thus keep escape routes smoke free in case of fire. In case when total leakage of the protected space is exceeds assumed value e.g. more doors open simultaneously pressure drop within the protected space may occur.

The most innovative feature of the MAC-FC(R) regulator is application of neural network based predictive algorithm which eliminates fixed control system settings popular for instance for PID controllers. Control system can adapt to changes in the control object and learn. This ensures higher reliability and flexibility of the control system and adaptation to unforeseen scenarios e.g. broken window, blocked escape doors etc.

Tests carried out for iSWAY-FC® unit demonstrated that use of MAC-FC(R) regulator is enables to generate and control the nominal value of pressure difference and automatically adapt to changes introduced according to test procedure (range of fan capacity min / max, and the range of leakage values min / max).

Page 14: COMPACT PRESSURIZATION UNIT INTENDED FOR SMOKE AND · 113 iSWAY-FC® - compact pressurization unit intended for smoke and heat control systems version 6.0.1 Figure 6. x - For systems

version 6.0.1 iSWAY-FC® - compact pressurization unit intended for smoke and heat control systems 122

The iSWAY-FC® type unit was tested at I.F.I. Institute for Industrial Aerodynamics in Aachen, Germany in accordance with the current test procedure constituting part of the revised European standard revEN 12101-6.

Tests were carried out for the biggest unit considered to be the “worst case scenario” and thus representative for the whole family of kits fitted with 15 kW fan and max. capacity 50 500 m3/h and for the lowest air leakage rate of 200 m3/h. All tests results were positive and have proven that tested kit meets all the requirements in terms of response time, precise control, reliability, durability and immunity to oscillations.

All laboratory tests of the representative unit were carried out in full control range (up to 50 Hz) and all settings of the control system remained the same through all the tests in order to validate and confirm self-adaptation features.

Reliability of the device – test

In order to guarantee the highest available safety level automatic self-test function was introduced. By default every 24-hours shut-off damper and fan are activated (damper is opened and fan is started at the very low capacity) by MAC-FC regulator. During this test it is checked whether shut-off damper reaches fully open position and fan-inverter set functions properly. Results of such test are stored in the regulator’s memory. In case any abnormality is detected general failure signal is transmitted immediately.

Rysunek 16. Official summary of the performance parameters of tested iSWAY-FC® unit.

Operation modes

Control system is designed in a manner to produce and control pressure difference or else airflow as described below:

Door closed conditions: set value of pressure difference between the protected space and the reference is produced e.g. 50 Pa +/- 20% (design pressure difference and tolerance may vary depending on system architecture and design objectives to be met).

Door open conditions: set value of directed airflow through the open door between protected and unprotected spaces is produced e.g. min. 1.0 m/s (means of escape) or 2.0 m/s (means of fire-fighting).

Please note: to achieve airflow criterion (door open conditions) proper air release from the fire storey shall be provided.

In most cases opening the door results in sharp pressure drop whereas closing the door will result in significant pressure jump. Those differential pressures changes are more visible in small and airtight spaces e.g. lobbies. Control system of the pressurization unit shall be capable to stabilize pressure difference within 3 seconds after opening or closing the door to enable safe evacuation and support fire-fighting.

Please note: air leakage of the protected space may change rapidly e.g. stairwell with external windows or smoothly door closer operation and thus pressurization system shall be capable to compensate negative influence of an unpredicted processes.

The control system in accordance with the principle „we do not only realize fire scenarios, but save human lives” should realize control task in all conditions, regardless of the number of open / partially closed doors, broken windows, etc.

Communication and controlIn order to enable communication and control of the iSWAY-FC® units based pressurization system dedicated FireBus® protocol was developed and implemented. For any SAFETY WAY® type pressurization system 2 FireBus® loops can be distinguished:

• Global FireBus® interconnects in the loop MAC-FC(R) iSWAY-FC®(-D)(-R) regulators with TSS or TS (depending on system configuration). The tasks:

○ the transfer of Fire Alarm Signal (FAS) information between the devices,

○ monitoring the status of different pressurization system components and transmitting them to the TSS or MSPU,

○ transmitting control signals sent from TSS or TS switches to proper devices.

• Local FireBus® interconnects in the loop MAC-FC(R) iSWAY-FC®(-D)(-R) regulators with remote P-MACF differential pressure sensors, MAC-D-MIN regulators, T-MAC temperature sensors and MAC-LINK cards. The tasks:

○ communication between regulators MAC-FC, temperature sensors T-MACF, regulators MAC-D-MIN and MAC-LINK cards, with which it interoperates.

Local and Global FireBus® communication protocols have a loop topology which enables to increase its reliability and immunity to single damages of the data transmission lines (in such case required component can be accessed through the alternative branch of the loop).

Installation guidelinesEach iSWAY-FC® type unit shall be installed (units, air intakes, cable trays etc.) in such manner to avoid any collisions with other installations and enable free access to the removable inspection panels (maintenance and servicing). In order to enable easy access to the unit minimum distance from the fixed elements e.g. walls shall be maintained.

Twin Air-Intake module (alternative air intake in case of smoke contamination)Air intake shall be provided for drawing air in from outside the building in such a way that it is not contaminated with smoke from a fire within the building. Air intake (intake) should always be positioned away from any potential fire hazards. In order to avoid contamination by the rising smoke, it is recommended to locate air intakes at the ground level or close to it (but well away from the basement smoke vents). If it is not possible, air intakes should be positioned at the roof level. It is essential that the air supply used for pressurization is never in danger of contamination by smoke. If the air intake is located at the roof level it is obligatory to provide smoke detector inside the air supply ductwork to cause automatic shutdown of the air supply fan. For the needs of the fire brigades manual override switch operating the air supply fan shall be provided.

Where air intakes are positioned at roof level there shall be two air intakes (Twin-Air-Intake module), spaced apart and facing different directions in such a manner that they could not be directly downwind of the same source of smoke. Each inlet shall be independently capable of providing the full air requirements of the system. Each inlet shall be protected by an independently operated smoke control damper system in such a way that if one damper closes due to smoke contamination, the other inlet will supply the air requirements of the system without interruption.

The discharge point of a smoke ventilation duct shall be a minimum of 1 m above the air intake and 5 m horizontally from it. Manual override switch to reopen the closed damper and to close the open damper shall be provided for fire brigade use.

Manual override switches of pressure differential system should be located in the following locations:

a) machinery room or machinery room of the pressure differential system (if separated), and

b) near the entrance to the building, at the site agreed with local authorities having jurisdiction.

These switches after activating should be locked in the „on” position, and should be designed so that their return to the „off” position is made by authorized personnel (e.g., by staff or by using code lock).

Described set of two alternative intakes operating automatically and enabling to switch to an alternative air intake is offered by SMAY company as a Twin-Air-Intake Module. Such module consists of two motorized volume control dampers with strictly

defined air tightness in accordance with EN 1751 and protected from the negative influence of ambient conditions. By default sizes of the air intake dampers are compatible with sizes of flexible connectors of the iSWAY-FC® units (easy assembly and connections).Przepustnica SRC-Z-U.
