CM breakers are designed to meet orexceed UL 489 requirements.Standard tests:UL 489 standardsection 7.1 gives test values forcalibration, overload, temperature, endurance, interrupting ability, dielectric. On page 21 of this document, extracts ofUL standards are given.Additional tests:CM breakers meetUL 489 standard additional requirements:

ratingsFour continuous current ratings:1250,1600, 2000 and 2500ATwo types are listed:other performances
The UL489 standard assures that thecircuit breaker has sufficient characteristicsto be usedin normal conditions. However,CMcircuit breakers exceed thestandardrequirements without additionalcost :in endurance : the heavy duty mechanismandcontact designprovidesamechanicalendurance of 10,000 operations andanelectricalendurance of 2,000cyclesin accuracy :the solid state trip unitprovides a more accurate protection thanrequired by the standard, see time currentcurves page7
standard rated circuit breakers100% rated circuit breakers
small dimensionsA unique and small insulating casing for allfive ratings (1250 to 2500A) simplifies layoutdesign and installation.
built-in control terminalblocksAre provided with the accessories, consequently intermediate terminals are notrequired for theconnection of control wiring.reverse feeding
maintenance freebreaker designreduces downtime and maintenance costs.
high endurancesThe endurance of the design is four timesgreater than that requiredby the standards.
isolation functionThe operating handle isrepresentativeofthe position of the maincontacts. The OFFposition canbe reached only when the maincontacts are fully opened.

portable test kitAll tests performed by the testkitarefunctional tests only designed to electricallytest the operating integrity of the trip unit, the flux transfer shunt trip and themechanicaloperation of the breaker. Testsare not designedas a check of the breakercalibration. Calibration tests can best bedone at the factory.
Complete test operating instructions andrequired setting details are given on the sideof the test kit. For convenience, theoperating instructions are repeated below.ST306S, ST306ST and ST316STtrip unitsare equipped with test points that can beused with the portable test kit. This test kit allows independent tests on thethree following protections :

DielectricAfter tests, the breaker must withstandfor oneminute a voltage of 10CX)V plus twicethe rated voltage between:
line andloadterminalsterminals of opposite polaritylive parts and the overall enclosure
Optional tests :high available fault current
Breakers havingpassedall the standardtests may have the UL label applied athigher values than the standard.Test sequence is as follow:
200%calibrationinterrupting capacity :an opening
operation followedby a dose openoperation (O-t-CO) on all poles are performedon the circuit breaker. The power factor over 20000A shall be 0.15to 0.2 lagging.
trip out at 250%dielectric at twice the rated test voltage.100% rated
Breakers having passedall the standardtestsmayhave the ULlabelappliedto usethe drcuit breaker inan enclosure, whencarrying 100% of its maximum rating.Thedrcuit breaker is submitted to additionaltemperature tests performedas inStandardtests, except that the breaker is installed inanendosure. The dimensionsandpossibleventilations shallbe recordedand shall bemarkedon the breaker.
Interrupting ability (Y sequence)Afterendurance tests andcalibrationsrepeated, thebreaker completes an openingfollowedby adose-open operation(O-t-CO),with spedfied current.Examples for three pole breakers:
tests on accessoriesShunt trip and undervoltage tripThese devices are submitted totemperature, overvoltage, operation, endurance and dielectric tests.
Overvoltage testIt checks that the deviceis capable ofwithstanding 110%of its ratedvoltagecontinuously without injury (this test doesnot apply toa shunt trip with an "a"contactconnectedin series).
OperationThe shunt tripmustoperate at 75%of itsrated voltage (except that shunt trip devicesfor use with ground faultprotection shalloperate at 55%).The undervoltage trip must trip thebreaker when the voltage is between 35 and70%of its ratedvoltage and shall seal (i.e.:the breaker cannot be turned on ONposition) when the voltage is at85% or moreof its rated voltage.
EnduranceThe device must becapable of performingsuccessfully for 10% of the number of "withcurrent"operations of the breaker.Auxiliary and alarm switchesAuxiliary andalarm switches mustbesubmitted to temperature, overload, endurance and dielectric tests.
Overload testThe test consists of fifty operations makingand breaking 150% of rated current at ratedvoltage, with a 75-80% power factor in ACandnon inuductive loadin DC.
EnduranceThe switch must make and break its ratedcurrent at rated voltage, with a75-80% power factor in AC,andnoninductive load in AC for 100% of the numberof operations "withcurrent" for auxiliaryswitches,and10% of this number for alarmswitches.

routine and maintenanceguidelines

insulation resistancetestsWhen breakers are subjected to severeoperating conditions, insulation resistancetest should be performed as indicated inNEMA standard publication no AB2-1980.Aninsulation resistance test is used todetermine the quality of the insulationbetween phases andphase to ground. Theresistance test is made with a DC voltagehigher than the rated voltage, to determinethe actual resistance of the insulation. Themost common method employsa “megger"type instrument A1000V 'instrument willprovide a more reliable test because it iscapable of detecting tracking on insulatedsurfaces. Resistance values below 1megohm are unsafe and should beinvestigated. An insulation test should bemade :
between line andload terminals ofindividual poles with the circuit breakercontacts open.
between adjacent poles and from poles tothe metallic supporting structure with thecircuit breaker contacts closed. The lattertest may be done with the circuit breaker inplace after the line and load conductorshave been removed, or with the circuitbreaker bolted to ametallicbase whichsimulates the in-service mounting.
recommendedinspection intervalsMerlin Gerin circuitbreakers aredesigned to be maintenance-free.However, all equipment withmovingparts requires periodic inspection toensure optimum performance andreliability. We recommend that thecircuit breakers be routinely inspectedsix months after installation, followed byannual inspection. Intervalscan varydepending on your particular experience.
A DANGERHAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK,BURNOR EXPLOSION.
•This equipment must be installed andserviced only by qualified electricalpersonnel.
•Turn off all power supplying this equipmentbefore working on or inside equipment.
•Always use a properly rated voltagesensing device to confirm power is off.
•Replace all devices, doors, and coversbefore turning on power to this equipment.
Failure to follow these instructions willresult in death or serious injury.
inspection of terminalsConnections to circuit breaker
terminals could be inspected. If there isdiscoloration due to overheating, thejoint should be dissassembledand thesurface cleanedbefore reinstallation. It is essential that electrical connections bemade carefully in order to preventoverheating.
Check for terminal tightness.
cleaningRemove the dust and dirt that haveaccumulated on the circuit breakersurface and terminals.
mechanical checksEven over long periods circuit breakersare not often required to operate onoverload or short-circuit conditions. Therefore it is essential to operate thebreaker periodically. To trip the breaker, push the push-to-trip button.
electrical testsThese tests require equipment forconducting pole resistance, overcurrentand instantaneous tripping, in accordancewith NEMA standard publication AB4.They are not within the scope of normal fieldoperation.
