NEW YEAR NEW RESIDENT COUNCILCongratulations to newly elected and returning council officers. Also on the council is Jessica Davis, vice president. Please support these fellow residents by participating in council events planned for you.

T.E.A.M. RESIDENT COUNCIL had a super festive Christmas luncheon in December. We thank Drucilla Ray of the UT Extension service for teaching us some great, inexpensive holiday gifting ideas. Everyone got to take home a holiday food mix bag, a door prize and a goody bag.

The next meeting is Tuesday, January 12, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the HRS main office community room, 235 West Jackson Street. To kick off New Year’s resolutions, staff from the Putnam County Health Department will be teaching line dancing lessons. Line dancing is not only a lot of fun, but great exercise! Don’t dance? We need people on the side cheering us on! A pot luck lunch will be served afterward, so feel free to bring your favorite dish. All residents are very welcome to attend. In the event of bad weather, the meeting will be moved to Tuesday, Jan. 19, in conjunction with a resident council planning meeting.

Newsletters are now being mailed to your home, and

2016 calendars were hand delivered. If you did not receive these, please call me in Resident Services at (931) 526-9793, ext. 212. The office will be closed Friday, January 1, for New Years and Monday, Janu-ary 18, for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

Melinda’s MEMOS

Happy New Year! It’s recertifica-tion time for residents of West Fifth

street and a portion of Pine Avenue. You should receive a letter notifying you of your appointment date and time and what documenta-tion you need to bring with you. If you have any ques-tions, please call me at (931) 526-9793, ext. 220.

MENTSPhone Tips: Quite often, people will call and leave a message to “Call me back at the number that showed up.” HRS does not have caller ID. When you call, please clearly and slowly leave your name, phone number and a brief message so your call can be returned. Also, if you need assistance, please call the main office number at (931) 526-9793. We have several phone lines in/out, so the number on your caller ID is probably not the main line. The after-hours emergency call out phone number is (931) 260-6080.

Your address: This is a reminder of HRS’s policy regarding your home address. HRS uses your apartment address to send mail to you. You must give your address to the post office for delivery of your mail. You may not allow anyone else to use your mailing address, since the home is being rented only to you. No one else is allowed to use your address for his or her mail. Only members of your household may receive mail at your address.

Resident Handbook: We encourage everyone to read the resident handbook. It contains lots of helpful information and tips, along with rules and regulations for successful living in your home. Need a copy? They are available in the main office lobby.

JANUARY 2016

Bountiful Bread distribution will be Tuesday, January 12, from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the HRS main office community room.

Don’t Quit, Just Come! Tobacco cessation classes. Congratulations to Veronica Martinez, the winner of the $50 prize given at the November meeting. January classes will be on the 12th and 26th from 2-3 p.m. at the HRS main office, 235 West Jackson Street. Classes may cancel in bad weather conditions. Please call Misty at (931) 526-9793, ext. 224, with any questions. Classes are free and open to anyone. This includes non-tobacco users who may simply want to know more about the effects of tobacco, who may want to help someone they know to quit, or who may be concerned about their child being targeted to use tobacco products.Make your New Year’s resolution now to quit smoking and put down that last cigarette. Our instructor, Randy Todd of Quit4Life, was a smoker for 20 years. It took him five attempts to quit. Your life will improve immensely when you kick tobacco once and for all. Don’t try to quit alone. Our classes can help you make the decision, even if it takes years! Within 20 minutes

of quitting smoking, your blood pressure decreases, your pulse rate drops, and the body temperature of your hands and feet increases. Within two days of not smoking, your ability to taste and smell improves, and nerve endings start to regrow. Want to know what happens in six months or one year or five years? Join us and find out!

Beyond the Garden was new at Quawana’s Coats this past year and was also a Make a Difference Day project. There were awesome displays of the food cycle and food samples. Sammie Ferrell was serving up some yummy soup and shared this recipe made with vegetables grown at the community garden. This would be great on a cold winter night or while the kids are out of school.

Root Pot • 4 white potatoes – peeled and cubed• 3 sweet potatoes – peeled and cubed• 1 large onion – chopped• 4 carrots – peeled and chopped• 2 to 3 turnips – peeled and chopped• 3 cups of chicken or vegetable brothSalt & pepper, to tasteHerb seasoning to taste, optionalIn a large pot, add all vegetables, pour in broth. Turn on high heat until rolling boil. Reduce heat and cook until vegetables are tender. Could add cooked hamburger or cooked shredded chicken to make a main dish meal or serve with grilled ham and cheese sandwiches.

TIMELYTIDBITSOn nights the temperature is below freezing, please open kitchen cabinet doors under your sinks to allow warm air to get to your pipes, and also allow the faucet to drip, which helps keep water moving so that it will not freeze.

RESOURCE CENTERGOOD NIGHT, SLEEP TIGHT; DON’T LET THE BEDBUGS BITE! Ouch! This is not just a kid’s bedtime saying anymore.

Bedbugs have made a comeback and are very prevalent in the area.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE THEM? Bedbugs are flat, oval shaped and about ¼” in length. Babies are white and as tiny as pinheads. As they feed on human or animal blood, they become a rusty brown color. As adults, they are about the size of a tick but can swell up as they feed. They hate light, so they mostly come out at night. You can look for them in the dark with a flashlight in hid-ing places such as the binding in mattresses, linen folds, nearby carpets, furniture and more. Also, look for signs the bugs have been there, such as blood or feces smears, eggs and skin sheds. If you have red, itchy bumps, espe-cially in a row on your arms or legs, it may be bed bugs.

WHY DO I NEED TO GET RID OF THEM? The bugs will continue to feed on you, your family or your pet, and eventually, there will be so many that you will be covered with itchy, red welts all the time. This can lead to secondary skin infections.

HOW DO I KEEP FROM GETTING BED BUGS? Do not buy or accept a used bed or mattress or furniture from a yard or estate sale or from an online seller. And never, ever pick up furniture left outside

on the curb. When receiving any pre-owned clothing from friends, thrift stores, or yard sales, etc., wash and dry all items on high heat for at least 20 minutes. Even new items should be inspected. It’s possible that an item may have been returned to a store and re-sold as new to you. All new mattresses should be well wrapped; inspect mattresses and box springs when you unwrap and as-semble them. If you know someone has bed bugs, do not go into their home or allow them inside your home. Even just brushing up against a sofa can transfer a bed bug egg to you that will hatch in your home.

WHAT DO I DO IF I SEE A BED BUG IN MY HOME? Just one bed bug can quickly get out of control. Call the office immediately if you suspect you have a bed bug problem. Do not wait until you see lots of bugs. There will be many more you cannot see. Simply spraying for bugs may not eliminate the problem. In some instances, you may have to destroy all of your furniture and wash and dry all your possessions on high heat. This will be at your time and expense.

We want to thank the numerous community supporters who donated food, clothing, toys, money and more to ensure our TNT and KIDS Matter youth and families had a great Christmas.

Our KIDS Matter after-school reading program celebrated Christmas by having cookies and milk with Santa as he read a Christmas story to them. They enjoyed a super snack and opening presents.

Teens Need Training celebrated Christmas by shopping for winter school clothes. During Christmas break, the teens had a celebration, complete with lunch, gift bags and afternoon games. After Christmas, the teens enjoyed the City of Cookeville Christmas in the Park festivities.

We are excited to begin a new year! Applications are being accepted for KIDS Matter and Teens Need Training after-school programs. You must apply, be enrolled and follow program guidelines to participate in either program. Contact Shaquawana at (931) 526-9793, ext. 213, today for details!

TNT and KIDS Matter will not meet if school is closed for bad weather or if bad weather is approaching. If unsure, please call me.
