Investigating melting Aim

To observe the process of melting in different materials.

Materials and equipment

• ice

• butter

• chocolate

• wax

• 4 x aluminium pie dishes

• thermometer

• stopwatch

• electronic scales

Safety

Identify any potential safety risks and suggest how these risks could be reduced.

Potential risk How risk can be reduced

Method

1. Place 5 g of each material (ice, butter, chocolate and wax) into separate aluminium pie

dishes.

2. Place the pie dishes with the materials in a sunny area if possible.

3. Record the air temperature. Leave the thermometer next to the pie dishes.

4. Record the time it takes for each material to melt completely.

5. Record observations as the materials melt.

Note: Depending on the temperature in the sunny area, some materials may take a significantly

longer time to melt than others. Do not continue the experiment if melting is taking longer than

10 minutes.
