preservation projects and community events,Main Street is an economic developmentprogram at its core. While design andpromotion are important points in the MainStreet Approach, the purpose of the work ourlocal Main Street programs do is to revitalizetheir local economies.
Each year, the Mississippi Main StreetAssociation collects statistics from our localprograms related to the impact they have in theircommunity.
In 2019, Mississippi Main Street organizationshelped create 185 net new businesses and 633 net new jobs. More than $55million in public funds and $92 million in private funds were invested in178 public improvement projects in Mississippi’s downtowns. In addition, 101rehabilitation projects were completed, and more than 43,000 volunteerhours were contributed, all within the boundaries of our Main Street districts.
Although large scale industrial projects often make the headlines, our Main Streetcommunities are generating significant community investment. Our statistics showthat businesses and jobs are being created in our downtowns year after year. Thisincremental progress is what makes the Main Street Approach a time-tested strategy for sustainable economic development.
As Mississippi Main Streets enter its 36th year of helping improve local economies, Ihope you will enjoy this edition of State of the Street.
See you downtown!

Organization Training held in Greenwood
Who knew Organization Training could be so much fun? On Jan. 31, more than 50Main Street leaders in Mississippi gathered at The Alluvian in downtownGreenwood for a jam-packed day of training in Organization. Attendees includedboth seasoned and new Main Street directors and board members as well as mayors, aldermen and other leaders from Main Street communities.
Organization may not sound as exciting as the other points of Main Street but it isfundamental to establish a strong foundation in order to pave the way for success. The day of training included sessions on building strong and effective boards andcommittees, tips for directors on how to manage successful Main Street programs, creating effective work plans, and staying organized with technology tools. Beforeadjourning, attendees had a chance to see what Main Street Greenwood is doingwith a downtown walking tour that ended with a fun hot chocolate bar at the old CityHall. And, of course, our group ate well in the Delta! Check out the program fromthe day and don't miss the next Main Street quarterly training - Marketing Trainingin Laurel on Friday, May 1.
