FITNESS & NUTRITION
Wellness Program Design Outcome #1: Increase the number of students in the HEALTHY FITNESS ZONE* and
reverse the downward trends for aerobic capacity & body composition
WHY? Physically fit students are more than 2x more likely to meet or exceed academic standards than students who aren’t operating in the HFZ
*The FITNESSGRAM® on the Physical Fitness Test uses Healthy Fitness Zones (HFZs) to evaluate fitness performance. These zones are criterion- referenced standards established by The Cooper Institute of Dallas, Texas, and represent minimum levels of fitness that offer protection against the diseases that result from sedentary living.

GOALS FOR IMPROVEMENT1.Increase the amount of time students spend
moving before core classes, before “big” tests, and during PE at moderate to vigorous levels
2.Implement health education to include NUTRITION, body image, & physiological development information
PARTNERSHIPS FOSTER COLLABORATION & IMPROVE HEALTH
Sequoia Healthcare District funds
Legarza Coaches
Teachers collaborate while entire grade level is at PE with Legarza
Students spend more time moving and experience more differentiated
instruction in PE and in the classroom
COLLABORATION AT HEATHER ELEMENTARY
Legarza Staff facilitated the Walk-A-Thon at Heather School so teachers and parents could walk with the students
EVALUATION• Principal Feedback (Monthly)• Staff and Parent Surveys (2 x/year)• Nutrition Huddles Pre-Post tests
(Trimester)
• Physical Fitness Test (Spring)• Collaboration Surveys (TBD with
Principals)• Nurse Collaboration with Middle
School PE and Science Teachers (Trimester)
