Jan Ellis
I received the following from Jan Ellis viaemail.
Dear relatives, friends of mine - greetings! It's been quite some time since I wrote last. Inthe interval after chemo regimen, son Randyand daughter-in-law Yan took me on the grand3-week trip to China - a royal tour arranged byher family that was beyond my dreams!Upon return I received radiation with chemopills from May 5 thru June 15 which I tolerated fairly well, altho the first 3weeks I was recovering from a cough/sinusitis that I contracted the lastcouple days of China trip. Dr. Jiang, oncologist, said the couple weeks afterradiation will be hard as I'll be feeling subpar (very true) after which Ishould start feeling stronger. However, labs show that the antigen count(markers), tho lower than first of June, are still very high, indicating thecancer is still aggressive. Dr. is scheduling the CT scan for first week inJuly, after which I'll see cancer surgeon in Everett after mid-July to discussresults and a possible prognosis.I have cherished your thoughts, expressions of concern and prayers - thankyou very much. I pray you all are doing well, and pray for healing for thosewho too are struggling with illness.
God bless,Jan Ellis

ReflectionsReflectionsYOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYBODYYOU CAN'T PLEASE EVERYBODY
I would have thought that he might have beenpleased with me; after all I was a customer inan out of the way store in a small strip mall, and besides that, a store that specialized inbulk and natural foods [what foods are notnatural?]. As it turned out he was not pleasedwith me as, though I suspect at first we began on much better terms [afterall I was a customer, and the only one in the store at the time]. On theshelves of the store you could find health items [most of which seemed tome to be quite unnatural], diet supplements of every imaginable kind[definitely unnatural], various herbs and vitamins [no thank you, verymuch!]. Nothing aroused interest in me as I examined the offerings until Icame upon the coffee section. It seemed strange to me that a store of thiskind would have coffee alongside all the many health food items, but there itwas as part of the bulk food section, and many different varieties of coffeeat that from which to choose.
I like coffee; all kinds of coffee, from mild to bold roast, from African to
Central American, black, with cream, lattes or cappuccinos. I just like coffee. If nothing else is available, I will even consume decaffeinated varieties ofcoffee. My attention in the store very quickly was drawn to the chocolatecovered coffee beans which were in a bin alongside several other possibleselections of coffee beans and all very neatly placed beside a commercialgrinder that would allow you to grind to your own desired consistency. Ichose to fine grind my selection, having almost immediately chosen thechocolate covered beans from among the available choices. I was rathersurprised at how quickly the grinder ceased operation after attacking mybeans and how quickly my dreams of chocolate flavored coffee after supperevaporated as well. I think it was the unnatural grinding sounds thatcaptured the attention of the proprietor in the first place, followed so soonafterwards by the convulsions of the grinder that brought him running tomy side. He was not pleased with my selection, even less pleased with mypresence in his store having discovered what I did with my selection, so Imade an expeditious [and humble] departure. Whatever happened to "thecustomer is always right?"
The crowds once again had gathered around Jesus, but it seemed that a lotof murmuring was going on. Not everyone was pleased with Jesus butneither had they seemed very pleased with John the Baptist. John had cometo them neither eating nor drinking, and they accused him of having ademon; Jesus had come both eating and drinking and they accused Him ofbeing a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and even sinners[MT 11.18-19]. One wonders if Jesus would've been able to do anything atall that might have pleased the naysayers of His day or those who hadsettled and very definite opinions about what a holy person would lookand/or behave like. Jesus, very clearly, did not fit the picture they hadformed of what the Messiah ought to look like and it is extremely doubtfulthat He would have been able to do anything or conform Himself enough tothe images they held in order to be accepted by them. Sometimes yousimply can't please everybody; sometimes you can't please anybody. BothJohn the Baptist and Jesus had been placed in the scales of public opinionand had been found wanting: they simply did not measure up to the variousstandards folks had embraced. It is almost as if God was declaring Hiscomplete disinterest in those standards.
What is so profoundly interesting in the Scriptures is how often Godsurprises us by doing exactly the opposite of what we might expect, or forthat matter, how unreasonably often he decides to effect his plans andpurposes for mankind through persons whose character we mightchallenge, whose motives we might hold suspect, whose weakness in bothphysical and moral dimensions we might deem appalling, and whosewillingness to serve we might label as lackluster at best. But therein laysthe good news, for if God can choose and use the likes of those others thenperhaps, just perhaps, He can choose and use the likes of you and me; andthe really good news is that He has done exactly that.
Fr. Paul+

Why Christians Should Be GreatPatriots Many in our country today, Christian and non-Christian, have lost their way on the issue ofrespect for our authorities and our country. Every other Monday night, Ihave the deep privilege to associate with a marvelous patriot. Frank is apast international director of Toastmasters and is in the club of which I ama member. He delivers stirring speeches on patriotism from memory at 90years plus. Frank flew numerous missions over Belgium and France afterthe Battle of the Bulge broke out. As he would say, "Lt. Frank, ready to go towar as a glider pilot in Operation 'Varsity' [Invasion of the GermanRhineland] with a flak vest, a steel helmet, a pistol, a carbine, four handgrenades and the copilot's seat in a CG4A glider." He would miraculouslysurvive machine-gun fire while pinned down by a German gunner afterlanding his glider. Listening to Frank, a brother in Christ, has made me takea deep look at my own journey of understanding patriotism. I've landed onthe truth that Christians should be great patriots.

Is There Hope for America?
The first president of the United States, GeorgeWashington, gave a sobering warning in hisfarewell address on Sept. 19, 1796. Heemphasized the two "great pillars of humanhappiness," which he identified as "Religion and morality." He thenreminded his listeners, "Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to
political prosperity, Religion and morality are indispensable supports." Hecapitalized the word "Religion," referring to Christianity.

America's Independence Should Befor Everyone
July 4, 1776 was a great day in Americanhistory: Independence Day! So historically,July Fourth is a day that is celebrated yearly with family get-togethers,cookouts, parades, watermelon and fireworks. It was a great day but not forall.
While our nation was liberated from British rule in 1776, there was a classof people, slaves, who didn't enjoy independence along with otherAmericans until the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Untilthen, slaves weren't considered to be persons.
