SUMMER 2015

Rebecca Nelson Says Goodbye After five years of outstanding service,

Rebecca Nelson is leaving Community

Nurses, Inc.

“It has been an honor and privilege for me to serve as President/CEO of Community Nurses and to work with the dedicated staff members, volunteers and Board of Directors,” said Ms. Nelson. “It has been the most wonderful experience of my career to work with this team. They are the very best!” During her tenure, Community Nurses has been recognized nationally for the past three years as a leader in home care by Home Care Elite and most recently as one of the top 150 health care employers in the United States. Ms. Nelson will be relocating to Ohio but stated, “I will never forget my five years

Services was the grateful recipient of

a donation from the Lenten Works of

Mercy program sponsored each year

by the Catholic churches in St. Marys:

St. Marys Church, Sacred Heart

Church, and Queen of the World

Church. Through the generosity of

their parishioners the Community

Nurses were able to purchase new

furniture and supplies for their

Adult Day facility. Rebecca Nelson,

Community Nurses, CEO, is pictured

receiving the donation from Betsy

Roberts, representing the Lenten

Works of Mercy program.

The center, located at 625 Maurus

Street in St. Marys, features a

comfortable home-like atmosphere

for adults who benefit from daytime

supervision due to physical or

cognitive impairments.

Community Nurses receives Palumbo Charitable Trust Grant

Community Nurses, Inc. was recently awarded an information technology grant from the A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust. Don Fleming, on left, and Bob Ordiway, on right, from the Board of Trustees, presented the check to Rebecca Nelson, Community Nurses CEO, seated, and Brenda Porter, RN-BSN, COO, Jennifer Catalano, CFO, Sherry Wall, PHR, SHRM-CP, Human Resource Director, and Cindy Fisher, RN-BSN, Director of Quality.

The A.J. and Sigismunda Palumbo Charitable Trust recently awarded $96,740 to Community Nurses, Inc. to enhance the organization’s information technology system.

The grant funding will help to purchase smaller, lightweight tablets for nurses and clinical staff. The added benefit of faster processors will save the staff valuable time in the patient’s home as they enter updated medical information into the patient’s record.

The grant will fund advanced software updates for the agency’s electronic health record system to enable the required move from coding claims using ICD-9 to ICD-10. The electronic health record system streamlines the day-to-day clinical operations for the agency’s home health, hospice and private duty lines of business.

The Palumbo grant will also provide funding to purchase benchmarking services from Strategic Healthcare programs. This tool provides a valuable information resource in providing excellent service and clinical outcomes for home health and hospice programs while comparing one’s business processes and performance

metrics to industry bests.

New Clinical Supervisor

Community Nurses, Inc. recently

promoted Kelly Myers, RN, WCC, to

the position of Clinical Supervisor.

Mrs. Myers worked as a registered

nurse at Community Nurses for the

past three years. She began her new

role on June 1.

“One of the things I enjoyed most as

a home health nurse was managing

the patients’ health care at home”,

explained Myers. “Now, as a Clinical

Supervisor, I have the opportunity to

provide support and guidance to a

team of nurses and therapists caring

for patients in their home.”

Myers said that she also enjoys

educating patients about their health

in terms they can understand.

Myers received her nursing license

from the University of Pittsburgh

at Bradford. While employed at

Community Nurses, she received

certification in wound care.

She lives in Wilcox with her husband

of 20 years and their three children.

Pay It Forward student project benefits Senior Outreach

As a Pay It Forward project Ryan Heary, a student at Elk County Catholic High School, organized a collection of personal care and cleaning items to support the Community Nurses Senior Outreach Program.

Tiffany Winkler of Community Nurses Home Support Services accepted the items on behalf of the Senior Outreach clients who will receive the products.

Senior Outreach provides these personal care and cleaning supplies at no cost to individuals who are in need of these items to live safely and comfortably in their homes. The Senior Outreach Program also offers a telephone reassurance program. Phone calls are made on a periodic basis to provide isolated seniors with a feeling of security and safety, and to follow up with individuals who may benefit from a closer monitoring of their general health or well being.

Safe Sitter: Char Snelick, Community Nurses Dietetic Technician Registrar and Safe Sitter Instructor, demonstrates one of the many skills students are taught to prepare them for medical emergencies that may occur when they are babysitting.

“I find it of utmost importance to bring to you the fine health care and professionalism that I experienced from your nurses. All nurses that visited exhibited these traits, but Denise Ross, my primary nurse, and Jolene Billick were exemplary. The skills, compassion and thoughtfulness that was demonstrated were outstanding and greatly appreciated.”-Patient comment

Generosity of the Lenten Works of Mercy

Thanks to the generosity of the Lenten Works of Mercy, a new washer and dryer have been delivered to the Community Nurses Adult Daily Living Center. The space-saving, stackable combination will be a great help to Coordinator Kathie Renaud.

Some of the adult day clients get showered at the facility, at the request of the family. When a client is showered, his or her clothes are then laundered. Each individual’s clothing is then washed separately from anyone else’s.

“We do 16 showers a week,” said Ms. Renaud. “That means 16 loads of laundry. It is a big job, and the new washer and dryer make it easier. The machine has a steam cycle, which will help us sanitize the towels, too.”

Kathy Renaud, LPN, Program Coordinator, and Stephanie Shields, Program Aid, are happy to have a new washer and dryer, courtesy of a donation from Lenten Works of Mercy.
