UNITY MORAVIAN’S WATCHWORD FOR 2017 13But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us. 15He has abolished the law with its commandments and ordinances, so that he might create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace, 16and might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. 17So he came and proclaimed peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near; 18for through him both of us have access in one Spirit to the Father. 19So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God, 20built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21In him the whole structure is joined together and grows into a holy temple in the Lord; 22in whom you also are built together spiritually into a dwelling-place for God. Ephesians 2: 13 – 22

Dear Unity Family, On Sunday, January 15 we chose our “Watchwords” for the coming year. The Watchword for our congregation is in bold above, and printed on the front of our bulletin: …In Jesus Christ you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit. (Ephesians 2: 22)

In light of the election and inauguration of our new president, and the division most all elections place upon us… I thought it might be good to take a look at our Watchword in its context of St. Paul’s letter to the congregation in Ephesus. When you read the passages from his letter above, it seems clear that this congre-gation is divided. They could have been divided culturally, nationally, economi-cally, educationally, religiously, and politically. But, what is also clear is that they have felt a “calling” to be “together.”

What power on earth would draw divided people together?

For St. Paul, the answer is clear: Jesus has made himself known to them. These divided people have come to realize that Jesus came to “create in himself one new humanity in place of the two, thus making peace.”

Please read that sentence again, and meditate on it.

Do you believe St. Paul is correct in his assessment of Jesus’ purpose in coming to earth?

St. Paul’s purpose in writing this letter to his congregation there in Ephesus over 2000 years ago is to try to bring a divided group of people together where they can live out a life of peace. The Greek word used for “built” means also “fitted” like fitting stones together to build a building. It is very important to realize, yes, God is fitting us, but we must also have an attitude of “willingness” or even “submission” to allow ourselves to be put into a position to be fitted into this new structure which may be called, Christ’s holy temple. Rough, multi-sized stones need to be hammered and chiseled in order to be “fitted together” to make a strong structure.

Unity Friends Unity Friends will gather at the church on February 27 at 6:00 p.m. for a pancake supper . The chef for the evening will be Maynard Surratt with a little advice from his assistant, Becky. A sign up sheet will be on the narthex table to determine an approximate number who will attend. Hope all of you can come for a delicious meal and fellowship. Anyone who would like to join us is welcome. Please speak with the Surratts if you have questions.

(continued from page 1) Are we willing to allow Christ’s Spirit to measure us, trim us, then to fit us together with others who may or may not agree with us on many worldly matters, in order to build a temple that brings peace?

May we together read and meditate on this “Watchword” which was drawn as in the ancient “lot” from the basket for the coming year.

How might God be speaking to us through this scripture text?

Could it be… that if we allow ourselves to soften our deeply-held opinions, ideologies, prejudices, distrusts, or beliefs which may continue to cause friction or continue to prevent us from the Spirit’s construct…well, who knows what kind of peace-filled temple may emerge on 8300 Concord Church Road? Faithfully yours, Barry

PROVINCIAL PROGRAM AND NEWS

Intersynodal Conference February 17-18, 2017 New Philadelphia Moravian Church will host a provincial, intersynodal conference with the theme: “Living the Essentials: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” Congregations, fellowships, new and emerging ministries, and provincial boards and agencies have received invitations and information about selecting and reg-istering participants. The program will include: worship, keynote presentations, and an open process of small group discussion.

Being the church in the twenty-first century calls us to new challenges and demands bold action. We’ll explore how spiritual growth, community, and mission characterize the life, witness, and ministry of the Moravian Church yesterday, today, and tomorrow. The Rev. Dr. Craig Atwood will provide an historical perspective of Moravian congregations from Zinzendorf’s time through the present, and the implications of that history for the fu-ture. Craig’s presentation will be part of an evening program Friday, Feb. 17 which will be open to the pub-lic. During the conference David Guthrie, PEC President, will share about our current Southern Province. And, you’ll hear about different forms of church for a changing world and have opportunity to offer your own ideas and dreams for the future Moravian Church.

God creates; God redeems; God blesses us. And we respond in faith, in love, and in hope. Practicing these essen-tials brings us closer to living as God calls us to live and opens the way for God’s spirit to renew us and give us new energy for ministry. May this conference engage us and inspire us as we explore possibilities for a vibrant future!

Moravian Music on the Mountain Weekend Music on the Mountain, a Moravian Music Weekend sponsored by the Moravian Music Foundation, will be held March 10, 11, 12, 2017 at Laurel Ridge Camp, Conference and Retreat Center. An opportunity to make music together, to worship, to learn, and to enjoy Moravian fellowship. There will be two tracks for participation, vocal and band (listeners welcome, too). Lewis Phillips (Fairview) will lead the choir and Donna Rothrock (Trinity, Clemmons) will lead the band. Call Laurel Ridge to register (336) 359-2951 1 (888) 831-5922 [email protected] More information at http://moravianmusic.org/news-and-events/moravian-music-on-the-mountain/

Lunchtime Lectures What goodies can Director Nola Reed Knouse discover tucked away in the Moravian Music Foundation collec-tion? Find out with “Even MORE Fun Finds in the Vault,” the “Lunchtime Lecture” of the Moravian Music Foundation and Moravian Archives at 12:15-12:45 p.m. Thursday, February 9, at the Archie K. Davis Center (the “Archives building”) in Old Salem. The lecture is free and open to all, and you are invited to bring your lunch (it isn’t provided). Parking is free in the Salem College Fine Arts Center parking lot off Salem Avenue. (Snow poli-cy: Do not venture out unless you have phoned us (722-1742 or 725-0651) and we say driving is okay.)

DID You Know . . . that the Board of World Mission has a mission grant fund (Gifts of Change) that allows us to support our global partners in ways that will strengthen their churches and promote their sustainability through leadership development, mission and economic strengthening. Some of these areas of Global Mission are in Cuba, Peru, Nicaragua, Honduras and Western Tanzania. Please visit our website at http://moravianmission.org/?s=gifts+of+change to find out how you can “be the change” in the lives of our global partners. 11The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teach-ers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of Christ. Ephesians 4:11-13
