Ashtons Green Allotments have been given an extra layer of security, thanks to Helena Propertycare.

Helena’s Propertycare staff installed a whopping 115 metres of steel fencing at the eco-friendly

site, as part of the team’s ‘Giving Something Back’ scheme.

Propertycare’s Paul Cooney and Stephen Callery volunteered to erect the fencing after vandals broke into the site, damaging several garden sheds. Within two weeks, the Propertycare pair had installed robust ‘Palisade’ fencing around the perimeter of the allotment site, based off Malvern Road.

Reg Massey, from Ashtons Green Community Allotments Association, said:

“The partnership project has been fantastic from start to finish – it’s amazing how much

better the allotment area looks with the

new fencing. Paul and Stephen worked really hard – and their workmanship has been to the highest standards.”

The site received a radical revamp in 2009 when the size of the allotments was doubled, additional plots created, and a community centre was built using vital funding from Helena, St Helens Council and other community partners.

A Helena tenant has been highlighting the housing needs of the north West at the House of commons.Bernadette Lynch met with a group of MPs to provide a resident’s perspective on housing in the North West region. She also highlighted the significant impact that partnership working between community volunteers, Helena Homes and other public service providers, has had on the Parr area.

Bernie, who is Chairperson of Tickle Avenue Tenants and Residents Association (TRA), said: “It truly was an honour for me to represent the people of Parr at Westminster. For many years, local volunteers have worked with Helena, re:new and other key partners like St Helens Council and Merseyside Police, to tackle key community issues and build a safer, healthier, happier Parr community. It was fantastic to have the opportunity to share our achievements and experiences with the very people who are governing our country.”

Rob Young, Helena Chief Executive, added: “Bernie is a great ambassador for Parr – and indeed St Helens. She is passionate about the Parr community and the work that she does, and always gives honest views, speaking from the heart.”

Fancy yourself as the next Stevie G, Wayne Rooney or Jamie Carragher?

Team members are split into two age categories - 10-13 years and 14-16 years. Footballers of all abilities are welcome.

So if you’re any good at dribbling, crossing, heading, striking or defending, or you like to pass and move, then get involved.

To join the team, or to tell us about a young person who might want to take part, contact Tony Field (Merseyside Police) on 0151 777 6057, or Lisa Bennison (Helena Homes) on 01744 63 73 83 for details.

A Helena tenant has won a ‘Local Hero’ award for her volunteering activities.

Betty Travis, from Parr, scooped the ‘Contribution to the Community’ accolade at the Wish FM Awards.

Betty said: “It is a great honour to receive this award for all the hard work I have put into the community – I have loved every minute of it.”
