Local TreasureAn Angel Moves Back into HarrisburgOkay, so here I sit quietly on my back porch trying to remember the day I arrived in Augusta, Georgia. Being from Pittsburgh, Pa. I dreamed of the warm winters and sunny summer days of the south. Well when I pulled into the motel I had tears in my eyes, there was six inches of snow and more on the way, the local weather man had called it a "freak snow storm", but soon enough it had passed and there came the sun and heat. I learned very quickly that I had a knack for growing things, my first garden left me feeling very proud. Learned how to make preserves and can vegetables and bake things i had never even of heard of before. I had found my "happy place", digging in the dirt and making it come to life.

That was twenty three years ago and I am still here, always trying to plant new things or cooking things that, when you offer to people, they look at you and say, really. Life is good in the garden, and I can say with great pride that I have passed my green thumb to my children. Working in my yard or garden gives me a great deal of inner peace, whether your by yourself or with a friend and it is also a great way to break the ice and meet the people that live in your neighborhood, the minute someone sees your garden they get the fever and want one of their own.

I moved away from the Harrisburg area 20 years ago because I felt that the people that had the rental houses was letting the area get run down, the where only concerned about what they could get, not what they could do to keep up the beautiful older homes and properties, but I have since moved back and being older with grown children I can see the growth and pride that is coming back to this Historic neighborhood. I have met some very interesting people that have the same interests as I do and its not to see how much we can get, but it is to try to give back to the history of Harrisburg, to make it a place that people want to move to and raise families and gardens.

Gardeners and Friends of The Harrisburg Community Garden are invited to gather to honor our hard work and the work of the bees who help give us the abundance of food we are enjoying this year. We hope that you can join us. Bring a food item or drink to share and if you would like to share a story, song or poem about your mom or grandmother or anyone who treated you like part of their family please feel free to join in on Sunday, May 10 from 4-7pm.

Tell Us Your StoriesWe want to hear your stories and we would like to be your voice in the community.

RECIPE: WATERMELON PRESERVES4 cups of the white part of the watermelon rind, cut about 1/8 inch thick.Cut into small cubes.Spread out on an oblong baking dish, single layer and take 2 to 3 cups of sugar and cover the cubed rind heavily with the sugarLet sit over night on the counter, i like to cover with saran wrap, just in case. There should be a lot of liquid by morning, so carefully pour it into a thick bottomed pot and bring to a full boil, stirring constantly, let boil for 3 to 5 minutes. The rind that didn't dissolve over night should have dissolved or become transparent and gooey, Turn down to low and let simmer for about 3 minutes, stirring constantly, it should be a golden color, Maybe a hint of pink if you got some of the watermelon mixed in, which is fine. Don't let it scorch. Can as usual.Serving suggestions:Make some homemade biscuits, and while still warm, take a biscuit and cut in half, spread your homemade Watermelon preserves over them and then pour some heavy whipping cream over, take a bite, guaranteed to melt in your mouth.

Women in ServiceRecently I was speaking with friends and we wondered how we could get more of our community to participate in the voting process. We remembered hearing about the League of Women Voters in the past and how they helped the community to be informed and organized events that encouraged participation of citizens in their own governance. And so, we have invited a representative from Atlanta to meet with us. I hope you will be able to attend. Do You Know the History of Cinco de Mayo? By Alison FieldsMost people know that Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5th, but do you know why? In 1861, Benito Juarez became president of Mexico, which was a country at that time in financial ruins. He was forced to default on his debts to the European governments. Because of the countries debt, France, Britain and Spain sent naval forces to Veracruz to demand reimbursement. The countries Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew. The country of France, ruled by Napoleon III did not withdraw. Instead, Napolean III decided to use the opportunity to carve a dependent empire out of the Mexican territory. In late 1861, a well armed French fleet stormed Veracruz, landing a large French force and causing President Juarez and his government to retreat. Under the leadership of General Charles Latrille

de Lorencez, the French were set out to attack the city of Puebla de Los Angeles with a troop size of 6,000. With a troop size of 2,000, led by General Zaragoza, fortified the town and prepared for the French assault. On May 5th, 1862, Lorenzez drew his army, prepared with heavy artillery on the city of Puebla. The battle lasted from daybreak to early evening. When the French finally decided to retreat they lost nearly 500 soldiers in comparison to the Mexican military only losing fewer than 100. Puebla de Los Angeles, the site of General Zaragoza historic victory, was renamed Puebla de Zaragoza in honor of the general. Today, Mexicans celebrate the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla as Cinco de Mayo, as a national holiday in Mexico. In Spanish, Cinco de Mayo means 5th of May. As for Napoleon, in 1964, he was captured and executed by President Juarezs forces.

City SpeakThis section will pose questions about our City and invite your polite responses accompanied by possible solutions..Acknowledging that we live in an imperfect world we still have the ability to solve our own problems. Given the recent issues faced by other cities in regards to community policing and law enforcement's efforts to maintain the peace........ What do you think is the role of law enforcement in the CSRA? Are they meeting your needs? In the schools? In the community at large?
