21 Community Index is Expanding!

Welcome to the October edition of Community Index. There are some great new businesses in this month’s

magazine.

Little Nut Tree Toys is a locally based internet company opening a new shop on Manchester Road opposite Unicorn. Go along to the launch event on 11th & 12th October to pick up some great quality toys at knockdown prices.

While you’re in that neck of the woods, pop in to Arkadash for “fairtrade, organic, recycled and sweatshop free clothing, make up & jewellery” where browsing & mooching are positively encouraged...

Another great locally based website company is planetvintagegirl.com. Check it out if you love all things vintage and retro.

Make sure you visit the Creative Recycling Gallery on Beech Road this month before the 19th October to catch the beautiful ceramics exhibition.

And if you haven’t yet discovered Violette opposite the Bus Station on Barlow Moor Road, there’s a 10% discount voucher to tempt you along on page 17.

I hope you enjoy the magazine!

The Lost Plot....Chorlton’s Organic Community Allotment

The Chorlton Allotment Project is a community-run ‘grow your own’ scheme, which encourages members of the local

community to produce their own organic fruit and veg. Based just off Nell Lane (near Southern Cemetary), we meet every Sunday from one in the afternoon. Attendance is free, and all visitors to the plot get to take home produce for their own kitchen table. We have five or so regular attendees who tend to the plot, but we’re eager to get more people involved.

In order to give people a taste of what it’s like on the allotment, coordinators Helen and Josh have organised a series of workshops. Including a Harvest Festival on Sunday 12th October and an introduction to Permaculture on Sunday 9th November.

Get your wellies on and get involved!

Everything is IlluminatedJonathan Safran FoerWritten in 2002, this was the author’s first novel. The main story follows the character of Jonathan as he embarks on a quest to find the beautiful Augustine. This mysterious lady saved Jonathan’s Grandfather from a Nazi search party during the Second World War. Unfortunately for Jonathan he appears to have hired the most useless tour guides in the Ukraine. His driver is a blind old man who isn’t really blind, his translator speaks his own unique version of English and they own a very strange “seeing eye bitch “ called Sammy Davis Junior, Junior!

Book ReviewsChorlton Bookshop

Running along side the main story are the hilarious and heartbreaking goings on in the long lost town of Trachimbrod. We meet all types of characters including a man who lives with a saw blade in his head for many happy years. These characters are all connected to Jonathan and his Grandfather.

This is a really unusual book well worth a read and if you enjoy it, you really should read Jonathan Safran Foer’s next

novel, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. Reviewed by Jo.

Explore modern-day birth in Birth Rites, a new touring exhibition at The Manchester Museum.

Birth is the common thread that unites us all but are all births really equal? How free are women to give birth in a way they want and where they want? How different is childbirth for women today in comparison with their mothers and grandmothers in the Western world?

The result of a pioneering collaboration between artists and childbirth professionals, Birth Rites tells the previously untold story of five childbirth practitioners, working in different settings with very different roles and approaches. For the first time, five artists have closely collaborated with these childbirth professionals to create a series of artworks exploring childbirth today.

Helen Knowles, Birth Rites curator said ‘childbirth differs around the world and this exhibition offers an opportunity to explore the social, cultural, spiritual and political implications of giving birth. It is a unique venture for The Manchester Museum and the first collection of contemporary art on childbirth, of its kind’.

Three local Manchester groups took part in artist workshops to produce a series of illustrated books which tell their childbirth stories and experiences. Young mothers from Salford Women’s Centre share their recent experiences of giving birth. Elderly residents of Cherry Trees Hospital in Stockport share their memories of childbirth 40 to 60 years ago. Nine year olds from St Anne’s Roman Catholic Primary School, Manchester, share their thoughts and ideas on

birth in the past, present and future, when they have their own children. They have also made clay sculptures of creation myths, photographs of which are included in one of the books.

Other objects on display come from The Manchester Museum’s own collection. They include items from the Ancient Egyptian collection such as fertility figures and baby feeding cups. Also on display is a sample of haematite, the mineral form of iron which is

important in childbirth.

Louise Sutherland, Curator of Secondary Learning at The Manchester Museum commented, ‘We are delighted to be hosting this touring exhibition. The objects we have chosen to display resonate with the exhibition’s themes of pregnancy, birth and child-rearing. It is fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the work of local groups and artists in the city where it was conceived’.

Birth Rites was initiated by Helen Knowles, an artist and curator, whose contrasting experiences of hospital caesarean and home birth spurred her to question our society’s approach to childbirth. The resulting artworks and documentary film form the core of this touring exhibition.

National Childbirth Trust (NCT) is a charity that offers numerous services to support expectant parents and parents

of young children. The local Central and South Manchester branch is run by a small committee of volunteers, and is always looking for new volunteers to help with a variety of interesting projects such as organizing socials and fundraising events, reaching out to new parents, and writing and editing the local newsletter.

NCT is best known locally for its Antenatal Classes (go to www.nct.org.uk for more information on childbirth preparation classes and to book onto one). The Central and South Manchester branch also runs Good as New Sales. These popular events offer expectant and new parents the opportunity to pick up excellent quality, “gently used” baby and children’s clothes, equipment, toys and books at a fraction of the original price. Parents are also welcome to sell items they no longer need, and a small commission goes to NCT. These sales are an excellent form of recycling that also raises some money for the charity.

The next Good as New Sale will be held on Saturday November 8th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Parochial Hall on Elbow Street in Levenshulme from 10:30 – 12:30. Admission £1.00. If you would like to sell nearly new baby and children’s clothes, equipment or toys, or if you have any queries about the sales, please call Caroline on 873 7595.

The new and improved NCT St. Werburgh’s Playgroup is being restarted this autumn. It will still be on Friday mornings at St. Werburgh’s Church Hall in Chorlton for parents and children newborn to age 4. It will feature play areas for different ages groups and healthy snacks. Admission is by pre-registration. For more information on joining or helping to run this playgroup please get in touch with Liz and Clare at [email protected]

The branch Welcome Evening and AGM will be held on Wednesday 26th November at the South West Cricket Club in Chorlton. If you want to know more about what NCT is doing locally please come along for drinks and a buffet.

If you are a parent with young children and would like more information about getting involved with NCT activities in our area, please contact the branch secretary, [email protected]

The Rain Before it FallsJonathan CoeWhen Rosamond dies she leaves behind a bundle of tapes and photographs with instructions for her niece, Gill to hand them to a young blind relative called Imogen. Unable to track down Imogen, Gill and her daughters listen to the tapes in the hope of a clue to her whereabouts. What they hear is Rosamond describing a series of photographs spanning three generations of their family and weaving the tragic tale of her and Imogen.

This is a departure from Coe’s usual style but what it lacks in laugh out loud moments he more than makes up for in this heartbreaking and emotional tale. This beautiful story of mother daughter relationships is sure to touch anyone, whether they’re a mother, a daughter or otherwise.

Black Swan GreenDavid Mitchell Black Swan Green is the fourth work from acclaimed author David Mitchell, following on from the award-winning Cloud Atlas, number9dream and Ghostwritten. Semi-autobiographical, it marks a departure from Mitchell’s trademark use of multiple narratives, focussing instead on a defining year in the life of Jason Taylor, our 13-year-old narrator.

Set in 1982, Black Swan Green takes place against the backdrop of Thatcherite Britain, featuring both the escalation of the Falklands War and the impact of the economic recession. However, the story itself is set almost entirely within one village, located within ‘the most boring county’ in the country, and it is the mundane concerns of Jason’s life – his parents’ rapidly deteriorating relationship, being targeted by school bullies, and a growing interest in girls – that are the focus. In particular, it is Jason’s efforts to hide his speech impediment from his peers, coupled with his aspiration to be a poet, that give a sense of structure to an otherwise uneventful narrative.

More than a simple coming-of-age story, Black Swan Green deals expertly with issues of self-expression. Beyond mere descriptions of Jason’s struggles with his stammer, the beauty of the book lies in how Mitchell plays with the roles of poet, narrator, and autobiographical author, blurring the distinction between himself and Jason, and underlining the subjectivity of the prose.

Community Index is currently a monthly magazine delivered to homes in different areas of Chorlton & Whalley Range. Our

first issue appeared in April 2008 and we’ve had a really positive response from readers and advertisers alike. Thank you for your support!

Building on our success, we will be expanding in the new year to include Didsbury. Publication is going to move to once every two months, and we will be tripling the print run. I’m really looking forward to this, although the delivery will certainly become much more of a challenge.....

There are copies available to pick up at Chorlton Bookshop, Chorlton Library, The Creative Recycling Gallery, Unicorn and various other shops, bars and cafes in the area. And in the New Year you’ll be ale to pick it up in didsbury too. Watch this space!

Community Index is expanding!

If you’re having trouble getting hold of a copy, why not subscribe to the free web edition? email us at: [email protected] and we’ll send you a link to each new issue before it’s out in print.
