Species-rich, semi-natural grasslands like traditional hay
meadows are now some of the rarest habitats in Britain, and they are also some of the most colourful and biodiverse. Up until the Second World War such grasslands were common – particularly in river valleys. These meadows were full of wild flowers and were at their most glorious in May and June. In late summer they were cut traditionally using scythes and the cut grass left to dry in the sun. Once dry, the ‘hay’ was raked into piles, loaded onto horse-drawn carts and dragged away to be stored in barns, and eventually fed to animals during the winter months.
I don’t suppose many of the old farmers thought too much about the effect they were having on biodiversity! Nevertheless, the drying and raking stages helped to spread the wild flower seeds (not to mention the grass seeds) and removing the hay crop kept the
nutrient content of the soil on the low side. This may seem counter-intuitive but high
nutrient levels lead to
the habitat being dominated by a few vigorous species, whereas lower nutrient levels tend to suppress these species whilst giving more delicate species a chance to flourish.
After the Second World War millions of acres of meadowland were ploughed up and planted with crops or turned into species-poor ‘ley’ meadows dominated by Perennial Rye-grass. In the Mersey Valley the ancient meadows were tipped on, turned into golf courses or sports fields or grossly over-grazed by horses. But when I first moved to Chorlton, in the 1970s, there were still small patches of species-rich grassland left, with some of the original meadow flora. The local authorities then committed a series of outrageous acts of crass vandalism by planting trees on many of these precious patches. This was basically a stupid and perverse assault – a bit like gluing a false moustache onto the upper lip of a
beautiful woman! It led me to formulate Bishop’s First Law, i.e. an organisation’s knowledge of, or
concern for, its local environment is
inversely proportional to it propensity to
plant trees. Whenever I walk on Chorlton Ees (i.e.
Chorlton Meadows) and see those gloomy, species-poor pseudo-woods that dominate the area now, I mourn for the rich, colourful place that we could have had if the local authorities had known what they were doing.
I have reason to believe that the old local meadows were of a type that ecologists call ‘Alopecurus-Sanguisorba’ – that is meadows dominated by the grass Meadow Foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis)and the herb Great Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis).
A defined suite of other species tend to accompany these two dominant ones. A sad, degraded remnant of such a meadow is still just about visible near Sale Water Park.
I was wandering across Ivy Green, one day last June, admiring a large patch of Meadow Foxtail, and thinking, “wouldn’t some Great Burnet look good with that?” Suddenly
I stopped in amazement because with the
grasses were a few plants of Great Burnet - in a site where I’ve never recorded that species before!

Frankly, I can’t explain how they got there and how I had previously failed to spot them. It occurred to me that here was an opportunity to attempt to re-create a Mersey Valley hay meadow.
I asked the Mersey Valley Wardens if they could strim the area in late summer or early autumn. They did so, and then members of FoCM raked off the hay. This wasn’t too easy because, after all the rain recently, the hay was sodden (luckily we weren’t planning feed it to any animals). One of our members said that raking this soggy mess reminded him of combing the knots out of one of his children’s tangled hair.
Although two of the appropriate species are present on our site, many other key
species are missing. In the weeks leading up to our hay raking day I had been gathering appropriate seeds from up and down the Mersey Valley. After we had finished raking, and had removed the hay, I mixed these seeds with some dry sand and broadcast the mixture over the site.
Species I chose included some more Great Burnet plus Bistort, Meadow Buttercup, some vetches and Red Clover and two dandelion look-a-likes: Common Catsear and Autumn Hawkbit. Most important, I added seeds of Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus minor). This plant is a ‘hemi-parasite’ – which means that although its leaves contain chlorophyll and are green, it also attaches itself to the roots of grasses and steals nutrients from them.
This suppresses the grasses and reduces
the competition with the more delicate plants.
When attempting a project like this it is extremely important to use local seed and not any old imported ‘wild flower mix’. Perhaps I’ll get round to explaining why in a future post. Suffice it to say that, contrary to popular opinion, planting any old ‘wild flower’ seeds in the countryside can be as damaging to local biodiversity as planting the wrong trees in the wrong place.
So, will all of this effort pay off? We’ll have to wait at least until May to find out – watch this space!

On the night of December 24th and into the early
morning of December 25th 1940, thirty people died in Chorlton.They were all victims of the second night of the Manchester Blitz in which an estimated 644 people were killed and another 2,000 injured.
Of the 30 who died many came from just two roads while the rest were spread out across the township. Most of the bodies were taken to Withington Hospital, a few to Embden Street mortuary and a few to the Cavendish Road (now Corkland Road) mortuary.
And I suppose it was the fact that the mortuary on Cavendish Road was just round the corner explains why the residents of 549a Wilbraham Road were taken there.
549a Wilbraham Road took a direct hit from a high explosive bomb and along with the two others which stood on the site of the modern post office was destroyed.
I would like to write more about these two people but so far I have only been able to turn up a death certificate. It isn’t much but it is a start.
So in the meantime I shall
concentrate on their home and what happened on the site before and after that night.
All three houses had been built sometime after 1885 and were typical of the new sort of properties that were being built to meet the influx of people to Chorlton.
Many of these were professionals; a few owned their own businesses and a lot more worked in the offices and big shops of Manchester. They were attracted here by a train service which could whisk them into the heart of the city in under 15 minutes and the fields, farms and open country which for many was even closer.
So along with a surgeon and his family who lived at the house on the corner of Wilbraham and Corkland Roads the remaining three were the home at various times to a retired cotton merchant, a widow ‘living on her own means’, Edward Ireland who had a number of photographic studios in Manchester, and a doctor,
dentist and an oil trader.
And the size of the houses reflected the inhabitants. Our surgeon’s house had twelve rooms, while the other three ranged from
eight to nine rooms. Each had cellars, a decent front garden and a longer one at the back stretching down across what is now the sorting office and yard.
But like other stretches of property in this new part of Chorlton they were soon developed with the addition of shop fronts and perhaps with an eye to even greater profits the owners sub-divided the shops. In 1911 at number 3a there was Harvey Goodwin, confectioner, at number 3 Mrs Ethel May, cycle dealer, while at 5a Stuart Gray ran a tobacconist and in number 5 C&W Copping advertised themselves as china merchants.

the post office in 1901 and remained so until the night of December 24th.
The Chorlton bomb maps show the impact of the high explosive bomb on the three properties and photographs from the late 1950s show the remnant which was the bit that jutted out still in use. In 1959 it was being used as the
Conservative Party Committee rooms.
But the keen eyed will spot that the building which would have been there is missing and eventually even this little left over bit of the old post office was demolished and the site became the forecourt for what has variously been Lipton’s and Ethel Austin.
Now those of you keen on a bit of modern archaeology will be able to see the clue to what had been the last of the three bombed houses. It is the cemented side of what is now the gable end of the phone shop. Back in the 1950s this was Brighter Homes, the paint and wallpaper shop.
Any one growing up in those post war years will remember the gaps in houses and the same raw cement walls where part of the terrace had
been demolished.
And looking at the 1959 picture it is just possible to see the space where numbers 3 and 5 had been which in 1961 became our new post office.
It was an obvious place to build it; close to the old one and utilising a bombsite. I did wonder whether there might have been a plaque to record the event of that night’s bombing, but then even here in Chorlton there would have been plenty of candidates for such a memorial.
And at the time there would have been plenty who remembered the event and maybe even knew Ernest and Gene Carr. But what was once a common experience is fast passing out of living memory and soon I doubt that anyone will even pass a thought to the odd space that runs from the Gable Nook Nursery to the row of shops by the bus stop.

Helping landlords look after their investments is rewarding! It’s also exciting finding homes for our
lovely tenants. Lettings has improved year on year especially with the BBC moving up from London - Chorlton certainly seems the place to be!

The start of April brings with it that combination of
excitement and panic for the gardener. The garden is emerging rapidly from its winters sleep bringing with it the first blossoms of the year and the ebb and flow of flowering plants beginning in earnest brings with it a wide-eyed thrill of what’s to come. The panic comes from two things - not wanting to miss out on the brief splendour of even the most modest of spring plants - easily done when balancing desk and recreation, and an existential garden angst located in bigger worries about the escaping year - or is that just me? To celebrate the offerings of spring in April, here are a few plants that will shower us with loveliness short and long. The woodland-mimicking canopy of spring provided by our trees yet to come into leaf, is perfect for a range of lovely plants – some a bit different from the standard bluebells and cyclamen.
Epimedium is commonly seen as a low growing evergreen plant in shady corners but perhaps try some more vibrant
varieties such as ‘Orange Queen’ or ‘Fire Dragon’, their names giving a clue to their hues. Epimedium x warleyense is a particularly striking variety with candy pinks, yellows and oranges held on stately stems.
Another good woodlander is Erythronium or Dog’s Tooth Violet (which describes the pointed shape of the bulbs), a clump forming perennial with nodding, graceful flowers. E. ‘Pagoda’, a yellow, seriously ‘recurved tepal’ variety (which means the ‘petals’ curve backwards), looks like a hat you might see on the stage at Aladdin. This variety
looks particularly lovely set in number amongst our ubiquitous bluebells. Other April flowering plants include the early Clematis alpina ideal for a North or East facing aspect whose raggedly downward facing petals are replaced by fluffy seed heads for a longer season of interest. ‘White Moth’ is a lovely variety. As with most clematis, some grit in the hole before planting and keeping the base of the plants shaded, helps mimic the plant’s native conditions.

A Beginners Guide to Acting EnglishShappi KhorsandiPerhaps best known as a stand-up comedienne, this book shows a completely different side to Shappi Khorsandi. This is a
memoir of her first few years in England with often only her mischievous older brother for company.
Shappi’s Father is a respected poet and political commentator in his native Iran. When an opportunity arises in 1977 to move the whole family to England for a few years, he jumps at the chance. However this few years is set to become permanent when due to an extreme regime change, the Khorsandi’s suddenly become public enemy number one. Shappi and her brother slowly begin to settle down to a life in England full of fish fingers
and kiss chase. Along the way Shappi remembers hilarious tales of cultural misunderstanding and more unpleasant stories of blatant racism. Just to add a touch of the exotic her family are forced into hiding when a fatwa is issued against them. Although obviously written by an adult Khorsandi, the recollections are told with an extremely believable child’s voice which makes the emotions in the story even more poignant.
This is impossible to put down as you find yourself wanting to read on and find out what happens to the family. A story of love, loss and essentially family.
The Prisoner of HeavenCarlos Ruiz ZafonThis is the third novel in a series which began with ‘The Shadow of the Wind’. Although nothing
can ever quite match the first book, this one definitely contains the same magical mysticism and intrigue.
The story picks up where ‘Shadow of the Wind’ ended. Daniel is married with a small son. However as he has found out before, the past is never far away. Despite his own problems, Daniel sets out to help his friend and bookshop colleague, Fermin. Desperate to marry his beloved Bernarda his past has come back to torment him, meaning the wedding will have to be called
off. A mysterious one handed figure has visited the bookshop and left a cryptic message for Fermin. Daniel and Fermin must once again battle their demons unless they are prepared to lose everything.
An easy and enjoyable read this still has enough plot twists to keep a reader’s interest. As with the other two books the ending has been left hanging so there may well be a fourth book in the series. If you haven’t read the second, ‘The Angel’s Game’ it’s definitely worth a read.

Chorlton Arts Festival returns to South Manchester
17-26 May 2013 with its annual dose of music, visual arts, comedy and performance taking place over 10 days in venues across the whole of Chorlton. The Festival, now in its 13th year, is a permanent fixture in the city’s events calendar, attracting record audience figures of over 20,000 people in 2012. The Festival’s Chorlton Weekender will take place over Bank Holiday weekend (23–26 May) and feature internationally acclaimed musicians alongside local talent. Weekender acts include Sunday-night headliners TOY, London’s hottest alt-rock band, who, fresh from appearing in NME’s Award Show Series at London’s Scala, are now preparing to support The Vaccines on their UK arena tour and have also secured a much sought-after slot at Manchester’s Parklife Weekender in June. Support comes from Manchester-based girl band PINS who are causing a stir with their punk-infused industrial sounds, reflected in the speedy sales of their limited-edition single, produced on gold cassettes. The same night, punk legend and former member of The Slits, Viv Albertine takes to the stage at Dulcimer for a rare
intimate show.
Performing on Saturday are off-the-wall American folk legends The Jeffrey Lewis & Peter Stampfel Band. Songwriter and visual artist Jeffrey Lewis is renowned for his six albums of twisted garage-indie-folk on Rough Trade, while Grammy winner Peter Stampfel celebrates 50 years in the music business, most famously with The Holy Modal Rounders and The Fugs, and featuring on the Easy Rider soundtrack.
Other acts include Brighton-based Esben and the Witch headlining on Friday. Having recently sold out Salford’s infamous The Bunker, they are currently on tour topping the bill at venues such as London’s Scala and New York’s The Mercury Lounge. A local musician making waves further afield, JP Cooper performs in the unique surroundings of St Ninian’s Church on Saturday night with his
full band, while The Candle Thieves kick off the Weekender on the Thursday night with their Beach Boys-esque love songs.
Festival Director Ella Byford said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring so many top-quality bands to Chorlton and allow people the rare chance to see them perform in unique venues such as local churches, bars and cafes. We’re really looking forward to announcing the full programme of visual arts, comedy and performance very soon.”

doors to the public again in early May, as the Green Walk Open House Arts & Crafts Weekend returns for its 7th year. Celebrating the work of local artists, painters, potters and photographers, the residents of Green Walk have been showcasing a variety of talent since 2006 when two neighbours joined a pottery class and wanted somewhere to exhibit their endeavours.Since then the event has gone from strength to strength, and
this year promises to be no exception. With a marquee on the central green serving refreshments, there’s always a homely feel to the occasion, and everyone is welcome to come on in, chat to the artists, get inspired or snap up an original piece of art. Gail Hegarty has been one of Chorlton Golf Club’s leading
lady players for several years and entering her new role as Lady Captain sees her on form and playing to her best-ever handicap of 11.Gail has been a member of Chorlton for 15 years along with her husband Chris, a past Chorlton Captain, and she has enjoyed many playing successes at the club during that time.
One of her ambitions in the coming golf season is to blow away the clouds and rain which were so depressing in 2012 and see a sunny year for golf at Chorlton.
Gail has played at top golf courses in many countries and her own personal favourite is Black Mountain in Thailand and
back nearer home her favourite hole at Chorlton is the par three 17th which is a great match play hole.
She plays golf three to four times a week and is a great sports follower of golf, tennis and football as well as enjoying her other hobbies of swimming and reading.
Her chosen charity is the Royal British Legion and her personal golfing highlight was to win the coveted Manchester Alliance’s White Cup and Hancock trophy in the same season with the then Chorlton pro David Valentine.
Steve Ridley (pictured) has played a key role for the best part of 40 years
in taking Chorlton’s Lloyds Hotel to great success in crown green bowling.The Lloyds have won numerous championships and are currently the World Champions in their sport and as secretary and a top player Steve has played a vital part in his beloved club’s triumphs.
Now he is stepping into the shoes of one of crown green
bowling’s most revered figures in Roy Armson, the chairman of the Taylor Bowls Manchester Premier League.
Roy was deeply involved in the formation of the league in 1999 and has seen a small decline in its numbers in the last three years, dropping from 14 to 11 teams.
But Roy is confident that the league will continue to prosper with Steve at the helm as he is full of ideas and will do a good job with his vast experience at the Lloyds.

which had been brought to their club.
It is part of a Tour around the country with the trophy as part of the RFU’s aims in developing grass roots rugby and has proved to a great success.
Whalley Range Cricket
Club is enjoying great success with its junior teams as well as with the three senior teams in the Manchester Cricket Association.In 2012 they had over 100 juniors up to the age of 16 enjoying the excellent coaching, improved facilities and matches at their Kingsbrook Road ground.
Preparations for the new season begin with a fund-raising effort at ASDA in Hulme
when their juniors will be bag packing in a venture which raised over £400 in 2012 for the junior section.
Junior training begins in earnest on Friday April 12 from 5.30 to 6.30 for u7’s and u9’s then u11’s and u13’s from 6.30 with signing on from 5pm.
There will also be a bring-and-buy sale of kit and equipment on the night. Potential new players are most welcome to attend.
Senior outdoor practice begins on Tuesday April 9 and Thursday April 12 and again new players are welcome.
