A Message from the CHAI Board President and CHAI CEO2016 was a year filled with activity and accomplishments for Community Homes for Adults. Our residents, our non-resident clients, our staff, and our board have all worked together to advance our mission of helping adults with intellectual disabilities live full and meaningful lives. During the past 12 months, we have focused on our strategic objectives of growth, improving the quality of our services and facilities, and expanding our involvement in the community. While accomplishing these objectives, we have also run our business soundly and become more aware of the challenges CHAI faces in the future.

Growth has been achieved through the opening of our first rental home - Yale House in Richardson - and by serving more clients in our Wolens Program, including supportive employment, life skills, family education, and social activity programs. CHAI is known to provide a quality experience, but we continually strive to improve quality by listening to our clients and their families through our satisfaction survey. We have expanded our community involvement by being a significant participant in the Special Needs Partnership 3.0 sponsored by Jewish Family Service which brings together the JCC, synagogues, the Jewish Federation, and Day Schools to address issues in our special needs community. We are also fortunate to be experiencing more volunteering, joint activities, and support from these organizations and their members than ever before.

We are pleased to report the business has been run soundly in 2016. We met our budget and our annual fundraising campaign goal while also growing our operating reserve. We have tuned our information management to allow us to better understand the performance of each of our service lines. We also exceeded the fundraising goal from our special CHAI Life event at the Perot Museum and proceeds went to support our Wolens Program.

We believe that part of running a sound organization is being aware of our challenges before they are faced. Two such challenges are the gap between our funding sources and the costs of our services, and the aging of some of our residents since CHAI is now in its 34th year. Better understanding is allowing us to better prepare for and meet these challenges.

We are also very pleased to give special recognition to two of our past leaders and long-time supporters. Marcy Helfand and Dave Millheiser each received the Milton Levy Award for Outstanding Leadership at CHAI’s Annual Meeting on March 14, 2017.

Thanks to each of you for your support. You have enabled our organization to have a good year. More importantly, you have enabled our residents and clients to thrive.

We look forward to 2017 as we continue to serve CHAI and together with you, make it the best it can be.

Mission StatementCommunity Homes for Adults, Inc. (CHAI) is a non-sectarian, non-profit corporation under Jewish auspices that provides programs and services to enable adults with intellectual disabilities to live full, rich lives in a safe environment and to meaningfully participate in the community.

Since its inception in 1983, CHAI continues to fulfill its mission of supporting those in need by providing a place to live, life skills education, day habilitation, job training and support, opportunities for social inclusion, and a team of tireless advocates that makes certain every resident and client is treated with respect and compassion.

The Jewish Federation of Greater Dallas Community Impact Grant helped our Supportive Employment program grow in 2016.

We have been fortunate over the years to expand our services by purchasing homes, as well as creating the Wolens Program Services and Day Habilitation programs because of the generosity of donors who understand the importance of CHAI as a force for good in the community.

A grant from the Orien Levy Woolf and Jack Woolf Charitable Foundation supported the Day Hab program as well as Community Relations activities like the afternoon cookie baking project with teens from Congregation Anshai Torah.

Proceeds from the 2016 Living the CHAI Life event held at the Perot Museum of Nature and Science provided funding for Wolens Program Services which includes life skills training such as medication management.
