Community Engagement Process
This change is part of a two-year community process. In Fall 2016, WSF launched a public process to gather community input on how to improve the Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route. As part of this process, WSF convened a citizen advisory group called the Triangle Task Force an advisory group comprised of three volunteers from each community served by the route. WSF has worked with the Triangle Task Force and local FACs to develop the draft sailing schedule and to identify priorities such as focusing on the afternoon peak commute westbound from Fauntleroy and adjusting sailing times eastbound in the morning from Southworth to better serve commuters. The Triangle Task Force considered
and prioritized comments from Fall 2017 public meetings.
Fauntleroy/Vashon/Southworth route operations
Ferry unloading/loading times, crossing times, and traffic volumes must all be considered when developing a sailing schedule.
Three vessels serve three destinations (four slips) on the “Triangle” route.
Each route segment has a different crossing time.
Current dwell times vary widely throughout the day, leading to challenges.
The afternoon design dwell times for the new schedule create a more consistent pattern throughout the day, with additional time to unload/load three 124-car ferries at Fauntleroy.

Why is WSF changing the schedule?
A 124-car Issaquah Class vessel will replace a 90-car vessel in Spring 2019: The larger ferry will require more time to load and unload to utilize the increased capacity.
A schedule change is necessary to better serve today’s travel patterns and accommodate future growth: The Triangle route hasn’t seen a major schedule overhaul since 2003.
To address priorities identified through community outreach: The primary goals of the new schedule are to address bottlenecks out of Fauntleroy in the afternoon and to create more connectivity in the morning eastbound from Southworth while maintaining connectivity to/from Vashon Island.
Fauntleroy terminal capacity and demand
Capacity Demand
The new schedule addresses the afternoon peak commute time westbound from Fauntleroy (graph for illustrative purposes only).
Morning Midday Afternoon Evening commute Night
What are the challenges and constraints?
Sailing schedules must meet varying constraints:
Customer travel patterns On time performance Available vessel space Crew work rules
- Driven by labor agreements and regulations
Vessel availability Terminal constraints Budgeted service hours and fuel Time for logistical vessel functions
- water- sewage- stores
At least 40-60 vehicle spaces (11-16% of capacity for three highly affected sailings) on afternoon peak sailings out of Fauntleroy go unused due to the existing schedule.
Travel with a Reservation
Reservations are available on the Port
Townsend/Coupeville and Anacortes/San
Juan Islands/Sidney, BC routes.
Make a vehicle reservation by visiting
www.takeaferry.com or contacting us at
1-888-808-7977.
Your reservation is not your fare. You may
travel standby on earlier or later sailings from
the same terminal without penalty, if space is
available. A no-show fee will be charged for
reservations not redeemed on the same day
and terminal.
Best Times to Travel
Customers can avoid the busiest times
and skip long lines by using our online trip
planning tools. Find specific “Best Travel
Times” on the current schedule page. In
general, the busiest travel times are Thursday
and Friday evenings westbound, and Sunday
afternoons eastbound.
Know Before You Go Somewhere
Before driving to the terminal, check the
“Terminal Status” section of our website for
real time vehicle load status and detailed
terminal specific information.

Understanding Our Schedule
Times are in color for morning or after
midnight (a.m.) departures, and in
black for afternoon/evening (p.m.)
departures. Times listed are departure
times unless otherwise noted. The schedule
begins with the first sailing time for that day and
ends with the last sailing time, which may occur
after midnight and technically be on the
following day. Please pay special attention to
annotations next to a sailing time.
For the most up-to-date schedules and sailing
information, please visit http://bit.ly/wsfschedules
or call 206-464-6400.
Holiday Schedules
Sunday schedules are in effect on Thanksgiving
Day, Thursday, Nov. 22; Christmas Day,
Tuesday, Dec. 25; and New Year’s Day, Tuesday,
Jan. 1 for the Point Defiance/Tahlequah and
Mukilteo/Clinton routes. The Seattle/Bainbridge
route will operate a Saturday schedule on
these holidays. The Edmonds/Kingston route
will operate a weekday holiday schedule on
these holidays. The Anacortes/San Juan Islands
routes will operate a normal weekday schedule
on Thanksgiving and a Sunday schedule on
Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Port
Townsend/Coupeville will operate a Sunday
schedule on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8.
Extra service may be provided for holiday
or special event traffic on any of our routes.
Please watch for notices on the vessels, at the
terminals, or via the information on the back
panel of this schedule.
What’s New?Fall 2018 Sailing Schedule

summer.
• Anacortes/San Juan Islands

• Anacortes/Sidney, BC

• Edmonds/Kingston

Oct. 9.
• Seattle/Bremerton
Additional Sunday morning sailing from
Bremerton at 4:50.
LoadingVehicles should be in line at least 20
minutes prior to scheduled departure
time and are loaded in order of
arrival with some exceptions. Heavy
traffic may require earlier arrival. For
reservation routes, refer to your confirmation
for the required arrival time at the terminal. On
some routes, expect to move your vehicle
while waiting in line.
Walk-on passengers should be onboard five
minutes prior to scheduled departure time,
except where noted. Once loading has
begun, the captain’s permission is required to
disembark the vessel.
Washington State Ferries is part of the State
Highway System. Using a cell phone while
driving on or off the ferry is prohibited by
law. WSF is a participant in the WSDOT HERO
program. Line cutters into ferry queues may be
reported at 877-764-HERO (4376).
Vehicles that are over 7’2” in height
or over 22’ in length, including
those with tall antennas, may be
loaded out of sequence. Vehicles
without 12 inches of clearance from
the ground may not be loaded.
Bicyclists and persons carrying kayaks
or canoes should wait near the front
of the loading area; they normally
load first. Crews will direct
passengers on placement of kayaks and canoes.
Once onboard, secure bikes in the location
provided. When leaving the vessel, please
watch for and stay out of the way of vehicles.
Shoes with metal sports cleats are not
permitted in passenger areas.
Only service animals are allowed in
terminal buildings or interior cabin
spaces on vessels, except for pets in
a carrier. Pets are permitted on the
exposed upper decks of vessels on some
routes. Ask terminal staff for loading
procedures, as vessels and terminals vary.
FaresPassenger (vehicle passenger or
walk-on) fares are round-trip, with
the exception of the Port Townsend/
Coupeville route and sailings to and
from Sidney, BC. Most vehicle fares
are one-way, with the exception of the San
Juan Islands and Vashon Island routes, which
are round-trip fares. Vehicle fares are based on
a vehicle’s length, height, and width, as well as
the distance traveled.
You can pre-purchase most ferry tickets by
visiting http://bit.ly/wave2go. Cash, travelers
checks, and major credit cards are accepted at
the tollbooths. We offer seniors, persons with
disabilities, and passengers with a Medicare
card or other eligibility verification travel at half
the regular passenger fare. We also offer special
rates for youth 6 through 18 years of age.
Children 5 and under travel for free.
Safety & Security
All passengers and vehicles are subject to
possible security screening. Hazardous materials
are not allowed onboard a state ferry. Prohibited
items include explosive or incendiary devices,
chemical, biological, radiological agents or
devices, unlawful or illegally-possessed firearms,
and illegal fireworks.
Gasoline may be transported in portable
containers not to exceed six gallons maximum
per container, up to 12 gallons total. When
calculating allowable transport limits, all fuel
containers are to be considered full. Containers
must be UL-approved and in good condition;
“quick-pour” containers are not allowed. All
vehicles must have gas caps.
Please shut off and tag all propane tanks prior
to boarding unless they are the primary fuel
source for your vehicle. A limited number
of portable propane tanks may be carried
in a vehicle in addition to those installed
in recreational vehicles. The total amount
of propane shall not exceed 100 pounds
(water-weight equivalent) whether in a
single 100-pound tank or multiple smaller
tanks. All propane tanks must be secured and
transported in a vehicle.
Please turn off your vehicle in the holding
lanes. Vehicle emissions can be harmful to the
environment as well as to other customers.
Vehicle engines must be turned off while
the vessel is underway. Do not restart your
car until directed by a crew member.

cars, significantly more than the Fauntleroy dock
WSF has made significant efforts to gather input from ridership groups, business owners, government agencies, and individuals across each community.
WSF reviewed close to 500 comments over the last year on priorities to consider when drafting a new schedule.
What have we heard?
Living in Fauntleroy, our/my concern is
traffic. What is WSF doing to encourage
more walk-on traffic?Vashon is a medically
geographically under-served area. Vashon is accessible by
ferry ONLY, and unlike the Olympic peninsula, Vashon has no hospitals, no urgent
care centers, no means to treat emergent conditions for residents
or visitors, and no other link to the mainland.
What we really need is a fourth ferry on the Southworth/Vashon/
Fauntleroy triangle route to handle the increased traffic for now and into
the future.Minimize the impact on the Fauntleroy
neighborhood when it comes to the increased future demand for ferry service to Vashon and
Southworth
Increasing the number of vehicles taken from and to Southworth we are
forced to travel around through Tacoma due to
the lack of available room on the ferries.
My other main concern is about the kids that
commute to our schools here. They will have a
much longer commute.
Congestion related to vehicle traffic
traveling to/from the Fauntleroy ferry dock has gotten way out of
control.
As a young mother commuting off island,
while my daughter and husband stay on
island, I need options, to adjust my schedule.
Need more service from Southworth
to Fauntleroy during morning commute hours.
Fill boats to capacity at Fauntleroy, even
if it means slight schedule delays
Bigger dock at Fauntleroy!
Be reliable and stick to the schedule!
Expand the Fauntleroy dock to accommodate

Priority loading and emergency service
Registered King County Metro, Vashon Island Community Van, and Kitsap Transit vanpools and carpools get priority loading and are guaranteed the sailing of their choice.
Emergency service priority loading and medical priority Emergency medical service vehicles get priority loading, and WSF makes sailing schedule adjustments to
coordinate with service providers for Medical Evacuations and Medical Priority Loads (MPL).
Although the draft schedule reduces the number of off-peak sailings from Vashon to Fauntleroy, WSF will still make unscheduled stops to meet emergency vehicles on any sailing scheduled from Southworth.

Additional concepts considered
All-Stops (aka “Pendulum”)
Fatal flaws: Doesn’t serve riders commuting to and from Fauntleroy well.
Drops departures from Vashon in the morning; from Fauntleroy in the afternoon. Requires all Southworth travelers to go through Vashon at all times of day.
Less capacity = longer wait in line.
“Separate the Triangle”
Fatal flaws: Only one slip at Fauntleroy and Southworth.
Requires long, irregular dwell time to avoid overlaps.
Overly long dwells = less capacity = longer wait in line.
