Lots of hard work and preparation went into this year’s program as the CE Team lead by Patricia King is building off the success of last year. Many thanks to Patricia and all the volunteers who have made this program a success! Summer is here and that means lots of sunny and warm Sunday mornings (hopefully)! My goal this summer is to make our time together each week spiritually filling as well as intriguing. That is what led me to the two choices we had in front of us for the Summer Sermon Series. And at the end of the voting period, the winner is “Word’s Matter.” It was close! I will do the other sermon series in October, which seems like a fitting time to talk about the Apocalypse Each week I will put in my weekly email the word we will explore that Sunday. I may also link in some reading or a video should you want to explore more about that word. I will give you the scripture passages I plan to preach on, but I will also send out other passages that touch on the subject matter. The goal here is for us to dig deep into words we have heard our whole lives and ponder what exactly do they mean for us? Too often, pastors and preachers toss words around without thinking about what the mean. I know I am guilty of that too! The first word we will look at is the word, “sin”. During July and August, we will also be serving Communion by intinction. Intinction is the practice of taking a piece of the bread and dipping it in the cup. Intinction as a practice does not come without a little bit of controversy. It can feel weird to dip the bread into the cup because it is not something, we do here at Community Church very often. When I think about all the reasons to do Intinction or not, I always remember this: I don’t’ want to spend too much time thinking about how the bread and the cup should be served. My focus needs to be on the meaning and value of this meal and making sure everyone gets to participate equally. Our belief that the table is set for everyone and that everyone can come and be fed is what is important here and it is what we are known for. That is what Jesus asks us to do! Lastly, make sure you pick up your Change for a Change to collect coins! We had such a great time collecting for St. Jude’s Hospital that we are doing it again -this time for Church World Services! Each year we donate school supplies for school kits that go to children in need. Our hard-earned coins will be going to help cover the supplies and shipping costs of these kits. Remember that when you spend your money at Community Church you are in fact buying happiness. You are making a difference in someone’s life and doing the work Jesus asks of you. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and enjoys these days! Fall will be here before you know it (I know, I shouldn’t have said it!) Bailey and I want to thank each one of you for support and love we have received on our adoption journey. From the buildings and grounds crew coming over almost daily to make sure the parsonage is up to code, to the countless words of encouragement we have received, we are truly feeling so much love and support. It goes such a long way. If I have any more news, I will make sure to share it with you all. I am blessed to be here and to have you all as our family. Blessings to each one of you! Rev. We Went to a Baseball Game! We had a great group (around 30) for the Jackals baseball game on Saturday, June 22nd. The rain held off; the Star Wars characters were all there; and the game was slow, and the Jackals lost, but we saw spectacular fireworks. Don’t miss this fun time next year.

Missions In July

In July our Thank Offering will go to Doctors Without Borders. Every year, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides assistance when catastrophic events—such as armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, or natural disasters—overwhelm local health systems. MSF also assists people who face discrimination or neglect from their local health systems or when populations are otherwise excluded from health care.

This organization is a neutral and impartial humanitarian organization that aims first and foremost to provide high-quality medical care to the people who need it the most. It does not promote the agenda of any country, political party, or religious faith, and, as such, endeavors to communicate its history, background, and capabilities to all parties in a given situation so that it may gain the necessary access to populations in need.

Please Support This Wonderful Organization. For more information go to doctorswithoutboarders.org. Our July Budget Amount will go to the Church World Service—School Kits and you can help! As you are out shopping please think of the children who will need these items come September. Here’s what you’ll need

• One pair of blunt scissors removed from the package (rounded tip, only)

• Three 70-count bound notebooks or notebooks totaling 200-210 pages (no loose-leaf or filler paper)

• One 30-centimeter / 12” ruler

• One hand-held pencil sharpener removed from the package

• One large eraser (no pencil cap erasers)

• Six new, unsharpened pencils with erasers removed from the package

• One box of 24 crayons (only 24)

Our August Thank Offering the Nick Gualtieri Foundation The NG Foundation was established in 2011 to honor the life of Nick Gualtieri. Nick was born, raised and lived in Cedar Grove. And a member of Community Church of Cedar Grove. During his 53 years he brought “magic” to people’s lives. Passionate and committed to the youth of Cedar Grove, he volunteered endless hours to the town’s youth sports program. Always positive, always a friend, always a coach; Nick had a way of bringing out the best in people.

The mission of The NG Foundation is to support the youth of Cedar Grove by funding projects, programs and scholarships. Please support this wonderful organization by using a pew envelope mark “NG” or your thank offering envelope.

In August our Budget Amount will go to PAWS of Montclair. PAWS is a rescue and sheltering organization that has been serving Montclair and the surrounding communities for 38 years. We focus on at-risk dogs and cats throughout New Jersey and maintain two small sheltering facilities (one for dogs and one for cats) as well as an established fostering network. Finding forever homes, spay-neuter, and humane education are all central to PAWS’ mission.

Rescue and reduce are key principles in our work of finding animals good, appropriate, forever homes; preventing warehousing and/or euthanizing adoptable animals; changing public consciousness about the value of animals and our responsibilities to them; helping address the puppy mill issue; and promoting spay/neuter.PAWS operates as a highly responsive and flexible animal rescue group. Our sanctuaries, along with our strong fostering network, enable us to continue sheltering a limited number of animals in need, often “bully breed” dogs. At any given time, we typically care for about 10 dogs and up to 100 cats and kittens. We provide critical services to the local north Jersey communities, and also assist overcrowded shelters throughout NJ. PAWS connects people and animals, helping in numerous ways. For more information go to pawsmontclair.org.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

On the last day of regular church school the Christian Education department presented the children books in honor and appreciation of their continued attendance in church school throughout the year. Church school will continue over the summer for those children who attend worship service with their parents. Each lesson will have a Bible story and a craft or game to complete each week. Our VBS program this summer was titled ‘ROAR’. Each day we began with music and a Bible story. Sometimes we read the

story, other times the teachers took parts and acted out the story as we read our lines. Each

story talked our neighbors and how God is Good…. When Life is Unfair..God is Good; When Life Changes..Good is Good; When Life is Sad..God is Good; and When Life is Good..God is Good! We had music in the background, learned the hand motions to a song, made a different theme based snack each day, made time for recreation and a craft, and sang for our parents (and had them moving with the song!) All in all the 16 children had a great time. Thanks to Carolyn Mitchell, Gwen Milbrook, Betty Bethune, Jan Harder, Bailey Welch-Pomerantz and Rev. Sarah Welch Pomerantz for all their hard work.
