Historical Performance and Program Accomplishments

• New people’s organizatin – yet to do projects with them as the primary instigator– focused on one big project: the land acquisition project

• When Kalayaan was still a member of PATAMABA-National, they implemented many programs after it was initially established.– Not really successful

• not well coordinated. One of the factors that the organization has mentioned was the – lack of project managers and thus a lack of monitoring of the project itself.

• Funds as a major concern.• In the process of establishing themselves as a separate entity from

their national chapter. – Currently, they are trying to rename their organization and change the

structure from a non-profit organization (NGO) to a People’s Organization.

Vision and Strategy

• VMO patterned after National PATAMABA’s– VMO is not aligned with the current situation of

its members

Page 15: Community Assessment

Organization Structure

Page 16: Community Assessment

Weakness

• A very new organization, • Great reliance on one particular individual• complicated organizational framework, • organization’s desires are myriad, but their

individual capabilities in terms of information and physical resources are severely limited,

Page 17: Community Assessment

Strengths

• members’ passion and enthusiasm for the organization’s projects, both current and proposed

• relative smallness of the organization lends itself to a personality-oriented leadership style, and the

• clear admiration for their leader’s work ethic translates into more effective involvement from the members.

• greater motivation and passion for the organization’s ideals of creating a better standard of living for their members.

TOWS AnalysisSTRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

OPPORTUNITIES Use the advantage of willing, available, and eager members in health projects that will benefit their community, given their desire for such

Engaging a few influential members of the organization can fast translate into engagement of others, given the smallness of the organizations

Establish possible linkages with existing municipal programs with community members in order to address their varying needs

Use desire for good health outcomes as a unifying factor in the drive toward establishing a strong organization

THREATS Equip otherwise unoccupied housewives as health workers and allow them to engage directly easily addressed health behaviors that will address their health problems

Utilize desire for engagement among unemployed home-based workers as human resources in livelihood opportunities

Use the project as an opportunity to test the current structure and leadership of the organization, as well as to unite the group towards common goals

Increase capabilities in terms of health knowledge and basic health care on a community level

Page 21: Community Assessment

Analysis of Issues• the scope of their as-yet-unstated vision has the

broad theme of– addressing individual economic– social stability of members

• the relatively weak individual capabilities of individuals in terms of resources. – Therefore the analysis of the difficulties includes

individual member concerns in addition to those of the larger group.

• The reality of the Philippine situation of widespread poverty

Page 22: Community Assessment

Analysis of Issues• General bleakness of the economic and social• Lack of economic stability

– prevents them from fully contributing to the virtuous cycle of investment-and-growth

• Microfinancing as an option to address this– but their knowledge and actual availability of such alternatives are

limited, given– limited opportunities for sponsorship r. Moreover, the

• No permanent residence – lack of security– no assets to pay

• Government social housing project opportunities are too few• Struggles in negotiating the partisan nature of local politics

Page 23: Community Assessment

Analysis of Issues• In terms of health

– Poverty makes it difficult for them to make this into a real priority.– Lack of health knowledge from poor educational opportunities

• Preponderance of both infectious and non-infectious diseases in their community. – Private healthcare is unaffordable to most of them– Unresponsive government-provided healthcare system

• Address several internal factors that can improve its effectivity– define what it wishes to do in terms of its vision, mission, and objectives– The leader of the group, asset as she may be given her strong capabilities,

should have plans in place for transition of responsibilities in the event that she can no longer fulfill them.

– The group should also focus on ways to generating sustainable income– address the lack of a headquarters to improve the functional capacity of the

organization.

Page 24: Community Assessment

Possible Programs to Address the Issues

• Fundraising for A Community Center• Microfinancing and Entrepreneurship• Multipurpose Cooperative• Health Education Programs
