Annual Report 2012
C o m m u n i t y A C t i o n P A r t n e r s
Community Action PArtners (CAP) was established in 1993
by the Harvard Business School Association of Boston to assist
nonprofit organizations in the Greater Boston area. CAP matches
Harvard Business School (HBS) and Harvard Kennedy School (HKS)
graduates with nonprofit organizations, allowing them to apply their
management skills as volunteer consultants working on challenging
and high impact projects.
Since our founding, over 1,000 HBS and HKS alumni have shared
their skills and passion for making a difference. Our volunteers have
worked on pro bono consulting projects to assist with strategic plan-
ning, marketing assessments, operational reviews and many other
business needs for over 200 nonprofit organizations across all mission
areas, including social services, youth and education, health care, arts
and culture, and environmental causes.
Every year, Community Action Partners volunteers provide an aver-
age of 15,000 hours of consulting, equivalent to over $3 million in pro
bono services to worthy nonprofits.
Our Mission Statement
CAP improves the lives of people in the Boston area by strengthening
the nonprofits that serve them.
We do this by:
• providing pro bono business consulting to nonprofit organizations
• providing opportunities for HBS and HKS alumni to channel
business skills into community service
We truly appreciate the support that the Harvard Business School Association of Boston and Harvard Kennedy School Alumni Association of New England clubs have given to Community Action Partners and extend our thanks to our donors who have sustained our mission and work through their generosity. Our deepest gratitude goes to our volunteers who have given their skills, time, and passion to our clients. The impact you have had in our community is tremendous.

What our clients say
“The CAP team combined a masterful group of caring, insightful and motivated individuals that displayed an unwavering commitment and passion to our organization from day one…Our board and staff were left with more than just a Strategic Plan: we now have the confidence, optimism and vision to move forward and grow our organization with purpose and sustainability… Your organization and the members of our CAP Team made a lasting difference in many people’s lives and for that we thank each of you from the bottom of our hearts.”
—Cliff Simmonds, Executive Director, Agassiz Village
“Our organization would not be where it is today without the support of CAP. Their advice and support has been invaluable to our growth and success.”
—Julie Rosen, Executive Director, The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare
“As a repeat CAP client, Historic New England has benefitted tremendously from the business skills that our CAP team members bring to our projects. We’ve challenged the teams with a wide range of issues from public programming, to membership, to function rentals, to farming operations. Each team has jumped in with enthusiasm, energy, focus, and invaluable skills to deliver practical recommendations that have moved our programs forward. We truly value the outstanding work that CAP does.”
—Diane Viera, Executive Vice President and COO, Historic New England
“We now have had two engagements with CAP and each has been instrumental to the success that we have enjoyed. In 2008-2009, with the downturn in the economy and significant internal turmoil, we had to drastically change the focus of our project from long-term strategy to short-term survival. CAP was able to help us through this magnificently so that we not only survived, but thrived. In our more recent engagement this past year, CAP has provided powerful data and in-sightful analysis that has allowed us to focus our mission in a way that should lead to longer-term success... One of the keys to success has been CAP’s ability to ensure that we buy into what we are undertaking.”
—Dan Hogan, Executive Director, Passim

Associated Early Care & Education works to “give Greater Boston’s youngest children in need, from birth to age five, the opportunity to reach their full potential by investing in school readiness, promoting healthy development, and strengthening families.” In 2014, Associated will open an innovative Learning Center that will take a cutting-edge approach to engaging children and families in the context of community. Associated has asked CAP to help identify a sustainable Funding Model to support growth and an enhanced delivery model, in light of a widening state funding gap.
Cradles to Crayons (C2C) provides children ages 0-12 living in homeless and low-income situations with the essential items they need to thrive – at home, at school, and at play. To help C2C achieve its rapid expansion goals, the CAP team is assisting with an Operations Plan, with the ultimate goal of revamping C2C’s current online ordering system to integrate with a new inventory management system.
Biomedical Science Careers Program (BSCP) has as its overall goal to increase the representation of under-represented minorities in the biomedical and other science-related fields. The CAP team is working on a Strategic Plan to guide the organization’s goals, strategies, and activi-ties as it enters a rapid phase of growth. The Plan will identify how BSCP can leverage its assets to deliver value to its constituencies, draw on best practices governance models of similar non-prof-its, and address issues of scope, scale and reach for BSCP.
NEADS/Dogs for Deaf and Disabled Americans works to provide indepen-dence for deaf and disabled people through the use of canine assistance. Founded in 1976, NEADS helps a broad array of individuals including wounded veterans, children on the autism spectrum, people with balance and stability issues and teachers, ministers and therapists who use the dogs to help others. The CAP team is creating a Communications Strategy for NEADS that will include recommendations for communications goals, brand positioning, messaging consistency, and targeted outreach to potential donors.

CAP Donors 2011 and 2012CAP relies on the generosity of our donors, our board and our volunteers. On a very modest budget of under $40,000, CAP delivers over $3 million annually in consulting services to carefully selected organizations, and they in turn serve our entire community better.
Thank you so much for your generous support!

Volunteers tell us they find working on CAP projects satisfying and valuable
on many levels.
“I enjoyed the intellectual, politi-cal and business challenges work-ing with the team and the client in developing a strategy. I particularly liked working with my teammates and the client’s Board.”
“It felt great to be able to offer insight and advice that the client valued so highly. It was personally invigorating to get out of what I do every day and think about new problems with new people.”
“I loved the opportunity to engage deeply with our client and the team, to apply my skills (and learn new ones)… and to make a difference to our client and the people they serve…CAP rocks!”
