YOUR Community. YOUR Community Foundation.Since our existence, the Saginaw

Community Foundation (SCF) has worked extremely hard

to promote the many positives of Saginaw County, our community. Hence, the title of the SCF 2007 Annual Report, “Know Your Community. Know Your Community Foundation.”

SCF has so much to be proud of, and the year 2007 is a perfect example. It’s pretty evident that people are becoming more familiar with the Foundation based on the fact that we established thirty-three new funds in 2007. These new funds not only allow the Foundation to make a greater impact in the community, but they also connect us to individuals with whom we can make lasting relationships. In addition, members of the staff were invited by twenty-five groups, organizations and agencies, to speak about the Foundation. The common message we presented was SCF is a grantmaker, philanthropic vehicle, community leader, and volunteer organization. As a grantmaking organization, SCF is able to assist charitable agencies and activities that provide specific and necessary services in our community. In 2007, the SCF granted $2 million to various charitable organizations. Examples of those grantees can be found on pages 4 and 5 of this report.

As a philanthropic vehicle, the Foundation works with any and all individuals who want a means of giving back to the community in a broad or specific way. For example, the Stevens family, of Stevens Worldwide Vans Lines, established an endowment as a way of contributing to youth programs. You can read more about the Stevens Family Fund on page 6 of this report. Other examples include the King Family Fund and the Robert E. and Martin H. Stark Fund.

As a leader in the community, the Foundation works with organizations, such as the United Way of Saginaw County, to conduct community surveys. The surveys identify community needs in order to give funding organizations guidance as to where their funds should most appropriately be directed. Finally, as a volunteer organization, SCF gathers diverse groups of people to assist with various Foundation efforts. One such effort includes reviewing scholarship applications, which is a great opportunity for people to become familiar with the talented youth in our community.

We hope the SCF 2007 Annual Report helps our readers to better know our community and our Community Foundation.

Youth First

It’s an exciting time for the Foundation’s newest initiative! For those of you who are

unfamiliar with Youth First, it is the product of more than two years of investigative research and strategic planning to determine the most effective and efficient means for serving the youth development and recreation needs of children across Saginaw County.

In May 2007, members of the volunteer-driven Operation Recreation—including Renee Johnston, Joe Madison, and Hurley Coleman—published a 203-page strategic plan that outlined a detailed approach to planning and promoting positive programs. The plan spelled out four service areas:

programs, communications and public relations, technical assistance and training, and research and evaluation.

Coming up in September 2008, Youth First will implement a pilot program at two Saginaw County schools. Students at Carrollton Elementary and C.C. Coulter Elementary will participate in an after-school program designed to meet their developmental needs and offer them opportunities for leadership and community service.

Each school will convene a Youth Advisory Council who will represent their peers and guide the programmatic end of Youth First. Council members will select from a vendor catalog—a list of engaged community partners who will deliver quality programming across a range

of activity focus groups. Themes such as life skills, technology, career exploration, visual and performing arts, and academics will join sports, fitness, and recreation for a complete approach to youth development.

Modeled after the Bridges to the Future program in Genesee County, but adapted to fit the unique needs of each individual school and community of Saginaw County, Youth First is a positive program centered on collaboration and cooperation. The Youth First mission is “to preserve, enhance, and expand character-building and recreational opportunities for Saginaw County youth that will help them achieve their potential as individuals and citizens of our community.” Our pilot program is just one of the ways we will fulfill that mission.

Tell your friends! Share the news! Saginaw County has received the honor of being named one of the 100 Best Communities for

Young People in 2007! What a great achievement! Leaders in Saginaw County have worked hard to promote positive things for youth. America’s Promise – The Alliance for Youth and its distinguished panel of judges have seen what we are doing and believe that it is good!

This award is no small feat! Many hours were poured into the application process so that others can realize how important youth are in Saginaw County and how much we do for them. Youth serving organizations such as Saginaw County’s Promise, Saginaw Community Foundation, Saginaw County Business and Education Partnership, Child Abuse and Neglect Council, Saginaw County Parks and Recreation, Youth First, Youth Protection Council, Boys and Girls Clubs, YMCA of Saginaw and First Ward Community Center, (just to name a few) were part of the reason for this great achievement.

2007 was a great year for Promise, and the Steering Team is very excited about the achievements and changes that have been made! Saginaw County’s Promise (previously associated with Communities In Schools) is currently working with schools, but has also began working with other youth serving agencies in the community as well.

Saginaw County’s Promise has collaborated with Saginaw ISD Head Start to establish Roots & Shoots programs. Roots & Shoots is a program of the Jane Goodall Institute. It fosters service learning by developing curriculum for students from ages three and up. Saginaw ISD is working with three Head Start locations to implement the service learning curriculum.

In May 2007, the Saginaw County’s Promise

Healthy Start Task Force hosted Jump Start Your Health. This health fair was held for sixth grade students across Saginaw County. The Task Force included representatives from the Saginaw Community Foundation, St. Mary’s Field Neuroscience Institute, SVSU Occupational Therapy, Care Source (formerly known as Community Choice of Michigan), Health Delivery, Inc., Family Youth Initiative and Synergy Medical. Students that participated in Jump Start Your Health were able to learn new ideas about how to stay active and be fit. Vendors were available to teach students about various health topics and SVSU Occupational Therapy students were available to lead the participants in activities such as jump rope, yoga, aerobics and dance. Overall, about 1,600 students attended the event! Without help from organizations and businesses such as the Dow Chemical Company, Merck, Kellogg’s, Covenant, Shay’s Water and Dr. Jack Nash, DDS, the committee would never have been able to provide this exciting and free event to our youth. Thank you sponsors for helping to make the event such a great success!

Spring Into Service and Make A Difference Day were two events that the Giving Back Task Force

developed for students in 2007. In the spring, students assisted with planting flowers and clean up of several parks in the City of Saginaw, including Wickes’ Crayon Park, Garber Tennis Courts and the Westside floating docks. In the fall, students visited house of senior citizens throughout the community to garden, clean, paint and rake. These events are coordinated by the Giving Back Task Force of Saginaw County’s Promise. The Task Force is made up of representatives from United Way of Saginaw County, Saginaw Community Foundation, FORCE, Child Abuse and Neglect Council, MSU Extension Saginaw County 4-H Youth Development Program, Saginaw Township Community Schools, the Boys and Girls Club, Houghton-Jones Neighborhood Assoc., and Dawkins Consulting Services. Sponsors for the events include the Master Gardeners, DC Painting, the Foresters, Home Depot, Jimmy John’s, Meijer, Mid Michigan Screen Printing, Old Country Buffet, FORCE, Sam’s Club, Shay’s Water, Tim Horton’s, and many others.

In the future, the Saginaw County’s Promise Coordinator will assist in promoting the Five Promises: caring adult, safe place, healthy start, marketable skills, opportunities to give back. In addition the coordinator will analyze how the Five Promises are addressed in Saginaw County, serve as a youth liaison to coordinate community resources, develop events such as Jump Start Your Health, Roots & Shoots, Spring Into Service and Make A Difference Day, and assist with fundraising for the Saginaw County’s Promise endowment fund.

If you or someone you know is interested in contributing to or volunteering for this initiative, contact the Saginaw Community Foundation at (989) 755-0545.

GRANTS for ExcellenceSalmon in the Classroom

Dave Boswell, a 4th grade teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas School in Saginaw Township, received a $750 “Grants for Excellence” award to help supplement the cost of equipment needed to make the “Salmon in the Classroom” program a reality. Mr. Boswell had already received materials from the Department of Natural Resources, but was lacking additional equipment. With the $750 grant, he was able to purchase a chiller and filters necessary to regulate and filter the water to keep salmon alive.

“Salmon in the Classroom” is a very interactive participatory program in which students are responsible for raising, caring for, and releasing salmon hatchlings into thier natural environment. This project helps to educate students about the necessity of taking care of our natural resources, such as our fisheries and the Great Lakes. As Mr. Boswell stated, “Our Great Lakes ecology is changing at an astounding rate due to many factors; pollution, invasive species, and global warming to name a few. As teachers, it is important to give students the science behind these changes and give them the knowledge to take care of our resources for the future.”

SCF is proud to be able to support projects like “Salmon in the Classroom” through the Grants for Excellence Program. This program allows SCF to award teacher mini-grants to Saginaw County teachers who have projects for their students that go above and beyond what is expected of them. The typical grant amount is between $500 and $1,000. All teacher mini-grants are reviewed and scored by a group of community volunteers. Grant applications can be found at www.saginawfoundation.org.

Brianna Bivins, left, and Andrea Deprisco, below, of St. Thomas Aquinas School participate in “Salmon in the Classroom,” a project made possible in part by SCF.

YOUR Youth2007 was a big year for FORCE! With over 50 youth

members, ages 14-21, engaged in youth grantmaking and service projects throughout Saginaw County, FORCE members kept busy this year! Some of the highlights for FORCE included: granting out $53,558.18 into Saginaw County for youth programs; adopting and providing for three families for United Way’s Wish List program; participating in Artic Fest and D.E.A.R. at the Zoo; working with Habitat for Humanity; etc. But perhaps FORCE’s biggest accomplishment in 2007 was placing a youth member on the Saginaw Community Foundation’s Board of Directors.

The Saginaw Community Foundation has always had an innovative, engaged, and diverse Board of Directors representative of leaders throughout the community. Our Board has experience in various backgrounds and specialties including education, corporate businesses, finance, marketing, religious entities, volunteer groups, etc. As impossible as it sounds, in September 2007 our Board of Directors became even more diverse when it was approved that two young people from FORCE will now serve on our Board of Directors. Cory Jackson, a senior at Heritage, served as the Board member with full voting privileges; while Hannah Watson, a junior at Heritage, served as the junior Board member in training. They were elected by their peers on FORCE to serve these roles.

Not only has the Saginaw Community Foundation gained some fresh ideas, but we also gained a new

perspective. The youth in our community are frequently focused on, however, not always utilized to their full extent. In return, these young people gain the experience of making important decisions along side some of today’s greatest leaders. As Cory describes it: “Being part of the SCF Board has given me the opportunity to better appreciate Saginaw and have a

better understanding of what really happens [in the community].”

SCF would like to thank Cory and Hannah, as well as the rest of the FORCE Executive Committee, Wally Abramson, Breannah Alexander, and Joe Madison for being dedicated leaders and keeping FORCE on track throughout the course of the year. Great job to all!

The project also includes two separate accessible parking areas, a specially designed restroom facility, changing rooms and almost a mile of accessible paths throughout the park including a perimeter path and walkways to link the features of the complex together and to the other amenities within the park. This complex

will enable all children the same opportunity to participate in their favorite athletic competition.

The Bridgeport Charter Township Parks and Recreation Department anticipates that the Frank N. Andersen Recreational Complex will be used throughout the year by a variety of organizations from Saginaw, Bay and Midland counties. Weather permitting the field will be available throughout the spring, summer and fall seasons. Since this complex will be made available to all eligible organizations it has the potential to impact thousands of lives.

The primary focus of the complex will be an outdoor, multi-use field where people of all abilities can play baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, tennis, in-line hockey and other sports on an accessible surface. In addition to providing a variety of athletic leagues, the Parks and Recreation Department will be able to promote awareness for children and adults with special needs. The facility, due to its close proximity, will also be available on a daily

basis to the Millet Learning Center for use by their faculty and students. This will also enhance their physical education programs and allow the students there, and throughout the region, a more complete educational experience.

Frank N. Andersen Recreational Complex: A place for all athletes of all abilities where all can play!

Martin H. StarkBoard member of the Saginaw Community Foundation

A Donor’s Perspective

Martin Stark is a native of Saginaw and graduated from Arthur Hill

High School in 1941. He is the founder, former owner and manager of Arrow Paper Products Co. and is actively involved in the community. Marty was the Chairperson of OIC of Metro Saginaw from 1965 until 1999, former chairperson of the Saginaw Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Saginaw Manufacturing Association, and has held a position on the Saginaw Community Foundation Board of Directors since 2001. During his time with SCF, Stark has served on the bylaws and policies, marketing, and distribution committees

lending both his experience and attention to details.

In 2003, Stark established the Robert E. and Martin H. Stark Scholarship fund to further the educational opportunities for the people of Saginaw, and also founded the Robert E. and Martin H. Stark Foundation donor-advised fund to enhance the Saginaw area.

Donor-advised funds allow donors to be personally involved in grantmaking. Although grants are subject to approval, Stark has been able to grant to a wide variety of organizations via his fund. Some of the organizations that have benefited include: the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square, Emmaus House,

Delta College Foundation, Saginaw Valley State University Foundation, Historical Society of Saginaw County, Japanese Cultural Center, Friends of the Animal Shelter, and many many more!

Stark says, “My first impression of the Saginaw Community Foundation Board of Directors and staff was that they were very sincere and dedicated to fulfilling the mission of the Saginaw Community Foundation. As the years of my Board membership and as a donor go by, I continue to feel privileged and gratified by my commitment to the Saginaw Community Foundation. As a donor and Board member, may I offer my thanks for [SCF’s] help.”

The Stevens Family Fund

The Stevens family has a long history of support for Saginaw County through the family business, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines. Since 1905, Stevens Worldwide Van Lines has

traveled billions of miles, conducted millions of moves and provided a century of service to relocating families, corporations and businesses. From the horse and dray to the highly technological relocation services of today, Stevens is positioned to provide quality service every mile of the way. Family owned and operated without interruption for 100 years, Stevens is an internationally recognized leader in the industry. A winning combination of experience, leading-edge technology and a strong commitment to customer satisfaction keeps Steven’s customers very happy.

In 1989, the Stevens family extended their support for the community when they established an endowment fund with the Saginaw Community Foundation. The family had a strong interest in supporting organizational programs, activities and scholarships that directly impact youth. Examples of some of the activities they have supported include, the Hartley Outdoor Education Center; the Children’s Zoo at Celebration Square; and the Boy’s and Girl’s Club.

The Saginaw Community Foundation is pleased and honored that the Stevens family chose the Foundation as their philanthropic vehicle to give back to Saginaw County. This is an example of a family who has made their commitment to Saginaw County, a long-term commitment, For Good For Ever.

From top to bottom, Lindsay Stevens, Morrie Stevens Jr., Dawn Stevens, Pete Stevens, Chris Mehring, Angie Mehring, Julie Stevens, and Morrie Stevens Sr., pause for a portrait at the Detroit Athletic Club during the Annual Stevens Family Council Meeting.

The Lisa Krukowski-Whalen Nursing Scholarship was established by her family in 2007, in honor of Lisa Whalen,

who passed away January 8, 2007. Mrs. Whalen graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1983 with honors and from the University of Michigan School of Nursing in 1987 with honors. She began her nursing career at St. Luke’s hospital and found her niche in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. She was devoted to her profession and eventually taught students from SVSU’s nursing program the clinical nursing skills they needed to succeed. Lisa planned to continue her own education through graduate school to become a nurse anesthetist. Unfortunately, her goal would not be realized due to health issues.

Even though Lisa eventually left the nursing profession and health issues continued to challenge her, she remained positive, courageous, and determined to live each day to its fullest. Lisa had a tremendous sense of humor and a tremendous love for her alma mater, the University of Michigan.

Lisa was an excellent nurse, but more importantly, she was proud to be a nurse. Therefore, the family decided to honor her memory by establishing the Lisa Krukowski-Whalen Nursing Scholarship to provide financial assistance to a graduating senior or college student from Saginaw County who plans to pursue a nursing career.

At the Saginaw Community Foundation, our scholarships are not only dedicated to helping students achieve their educational goals, but many of the funds also act as an everlasting tribute. These funds honor outstanding people in our community that have impacted the lives’ of others. Many of our scholarships are set up in honor of or memory of mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends, family, and other special people that have life stories, like Lisa’s. Please contact SCF for more information on our scholarship programs and look for our scholarship application online, available in the fall, at www.saginawfoundation.org.

Financial SummaryWe believe it is important that an organization

be fiscally responsible and that the funds entrusted to its care be used as intended. The Saginaw Community Foundation takes our stewardship role very seriously. On this page, we have included a copy of our condensed financial statement, as well as a breakdown of our grants and administrative expenses. We’re very proud to note that our administrative expenses are consistently low, with just over one cent on the dollar going to administrative costs. If you would like to review a copy of the Foundation’s audit, please give us a call.
