cultural and literary achievements is very important in ourgeneration. Mr. Saroyan's honest, courageous, and pioneeringworks highlight the history of Armenian Americans. And I'm noteven Armenian. I'm actually a Korean American with manyArmenian American friends and colleagues. We all can learn fromone another by respecting, preserving and celebrating each othercommunity's rich culture, art and history. I applaud the efforts ofeveryone involved for this special dedication project and hope thecommemoration event will become a reality. Congratulationsahead! And Thank you for believing in yourselves and believingin others for support. From my heart to yours! T.C. Kim,President, Korean American Foundation of Glendale

Communication from Public  Name: Mihran ToumajanDate Submitted: 09/19/2019 03:32 AMCouncil File No: 19-1051 Comments for Public Posting:  I wholeheartedly support Council file 19-1051. Armenian

American prolific author, playwright, and artist William Saroyan,who hailed from Fresno, California, is regarded as a giant in 20thcentury American literature. A museum in Fresno, which issituated in the author's former home, contains gems of Saroyan'sliterary manuscripts, parts of his archive, some of his artisticworks, and a wealth of information that is available on-site andalso in a virtual capacity by way of the Saroyan Museum'sdedicated app. Again, the naming of Saroyan Square in thedesignated area in the City of Los Angeles would educate thepublic about the life and achievements of this distinguishedArmenian American and son of California.

someone with no connection to the area other than his place ofemigration. Honor the native Americans who first lived here orthe writers, like Mcgroarty who did. Maybe someone from thefilm industry or space programs who have lived here whilereaching fame. Thank you for listening.

Communication from Public  Name:Date Submitted: 09/19/2019 09:58 AMCouncil File No: 19-1051 Comments for Public Posting:  In regards to naming the intersection of commerce and Valmont

"Saroyan square" - after Willam Saroyan -- Saroyan never lived inTujunga. He wrote nothing about Tujunga, he made no referencesto Tujunga. This makes no sense and is a very plainly pandering toa portion of the community that - also sees it as such. While Iappreciate the work of Saroyan, I'm against this and would beagainst anyone named that had no specific connection to the area.it's a badly conceived idea with an obviousness that does notreflect well on your political ethics.

community this way- this motion was put through without anyinput in the community- other than her select group of donors.This site (intersection in Tujunga) should not be used for herpolitical pandering- This is our one of only two historic sites inour community and should NOT be named after a man who hadabsolutely NO connection to this community. There are numerousSunland Tujunga residents who have contributed mightily to thiscommunity- yet, for whatever reason, Ms Rodriquez has chosen torush this motion through the committee WITHOUT bothering toinform or include the residents- her behavior in this is utterlyshameful. She does NOT represent this community- and neverhas- it is no wonder she is willing to sell out this community to thehighest bidder. If it is so important to her and her donors to givethem an intersection in this community- just so they can claimsomething- then why are there not any local members in ourcommunity who deserve this honor? Why must these people bringin a name from another city? Disgusting and shameful

Communication from Public  Name: Marjorie MaxonDate Submitted: 09/19/2019 07:09 PMCouncil File No: 19-1051 Comments for Public Posting:  I oppose this motion as written. 1) This appears to be an idea that

some active members of the Armenian community suggested toour councilwoman and she just did it, no community notice orinput from anyone else who lives here including those whovolunteer their time to Bolton Hall and the NeighborhoodCouncil. I live here and had no idea this was being planned andstill have no idea what it is going to look like. 2) Choosing thisparticular intersection is divisive. You do not show tolerance anddiversity by choosing the most historic corner in Tujunga andre-naming it for someone who never lived in or wrote about thearea. I have seen no rationale for why this particular intersectionhas to be chosen for Saroyan Square other than it is one of the fiveintersections that cross Commerce Ave. where there has been anArmenian Festival for 4 years if you count this year’s festival inOctober. This particular intersection is the location of Bolton Hall,a City of Los Angeles historical monument built by GeorgeHarris in 1913 and preserved by volunteers, most notably RobertaStewart, beginning in 1960. Countless volunteers have kept itopen as a museum and give monthly presentations on localhistory. As you can see by the public comments, many residentsoppose this location. 3) Any other corner in Sunland Tujungawould probably be fine or at least less controversial, including theother 4 intersections on Commerce where the Armenian Festivalis held. I have read the comments in favor of the motion and noneof them show the slightest interest in the actual history of thiscorner. This being the case, I see no reason why this street sign, orplaque or whatever it is could not be moved to another lesshistoric location. As was suggested in another comment theintersection of Foothill and Commerce, at the other end of thefestival area, is a much more prominent location. This wouldrecognize the Armenian community without putting inaccuratehistory on an historical corner.

Communication from Public  Name: Pat KramerDate Submitted: 09/19/2019 04:03 PMCouncil File No: 19-1051 Comments for Public Posting:  While as a writer I have tremendous respect for William Saroyan,

this particular location is not the right place. This is a veryimportant historic location already as it was the location for theLittle Landers colony of the early 1900s where pioneers met in thestone building on this very site to form a utopian community. Ithink that naming this square for William Saroyan, who was NOTa local resident and did NOT contribute directly to thiscommunity, it would be slighting the very history that occurred onthis location. I strongly urge the L.A. City Council to DENY thismotion. It is not the right place and it suggests that CM Rodriguezdoes not understand or value our local history here.

family . Installing a plaque with Saroyan’s name atValmont/Commerce intersection is not a good idea. It can be doneat some other place in town. I’m sure other Armenians in Sunland-Tujunga see this action unnecessary. The history of this townshouldn’t be changed/altered/touched.
