Astronomers used the way thatlight from distant stars wasdistorted by a huge galacticcluster known as Abell 1689 towork out the amount of darkenergy in the cosmos.

Dark energy is a mysteriousforce that speeds up theexpansion ofthe Universe.

Understanding the distributionof this force revealed that thelikely fate of the Universe was tokeep on expanding.

It will eventually become a cold, dead wasteland, researchers say.

The study, conducted by aninternational team led byProfessor Eric Jullo ofNasa's JetPropulsion Laboratory inCalifornia, is published in thejournal Science.

Dark energy makes up three-quarters of our Universe but is

totally invisible. We only knowit exists because of its effect onthe expansion ofthe Universe.

To work out how dark energy isspread through space, astronomers used the HubbleSpace Telescope to observe theway that light from distant starswas distorted around Abell1689, a nearby cluster ofgalaxies.

Abell 1689, found in theconstellation of Virgo, is one ofthe biggest galactic clustersknown to science.

Because of its huge mass, thecluster acts as a cosmicmagnifying glass, causing light tobend around it.

The way in which light isdistorted by this cosmic lensdepends on three factors: howfar away the distant object is; themass of Abell 1689; and thedistribution ofdark energy.

The astronomers were able tomeasure the first two variablesusing the European SouthernObservatory's Very Large

Plus, anti-Islamic rhetoric appears to be increasing on blogs, talkradio and in political campaigns, too.

Local opposition to newmosques is nothing new, butusually — at least publicly, anyway — the critics complainabout increased traffic, noiseand more traditional zoningconcerns.

But in Temecula, Calif.,protesters against a proposedmosque there weren't shy at allabout saying exactly why theydon't want this proposedmosque.

"I don't care for their religion, Idon't care for their politics," saidCynthia Daum, a mother andgrandmother who was one ofabout two dozen protesters at arecent demonstration.

"I don't want them here openingmosques in every city, trying toopen it up on Ground Zero inNew York, where they killedthousands and thousands ofpeople. They don't belong here."She said it twice for emphasis:"They don't belong here."

Though supporters of themosque outnumberedopponents in Temecula that day3 to 1 , such anti-Islamicsentiment appears to be growingstronger, in California and allacross the U.S.

There have been similar protestsagainst mosques inMurphreesboro, Tenn.,Sheboygan, Wis., and elsewhere. It's not just mosques being

targeted, but increasingly, theMuslim faith itself.

Voters in Oklahoma this fall arebeing asked in a referendum toban the use of Sharia, or Islamic, law in the state's courts, eventhough there has never been oneinstance of Sharia law beingcited or used in the U.S., nor anyrequest for Sharia law to be usedin any court in the U.S.

And last month in Tennessee, while campaigning for theRepublican nomination forgovernor in his state, Lt. Gov.Ron Ramsey suggested Islam is acult and may not be protectedby the First Amendment.
