Editorial

From the Editor in Chief Dr. Chawngthanliana. Director, RIPANS.

It gives me immense pleasure to introduce the first edition of Drug Information Bulletin by the Dept. of Phar-macy, RIPANS. I hope this bulletin will benefit all the readers. Pregnant and lactating mothers should be very cautious on taking drugs. Although the drugs may have cured the mother, the same drug can cause different health problems and/or even physical/mental abnormali-ties to the fetus or the lactating baby, the article in this bulletin examines the drugs use in pregnancy and lacta-tion, I hope it will be a good information to the readers.

From the Editor’s desk Dr. H. Lalhlenmawia. Head, Dept. of Pharmacy, RIPANS.

Every woman in the general population has

a 3–5% risk of having a child with a birth

defect or mental retardation. Two im-

portant factors to consider when assessing

the teratogenic potential of a medication

are the stage of pregnancy at which the

exposure occurred and the amount of medi-

cation taken. If a pregnant or breast feed-

ing patient who is currently taking, or con-

sidering taking a medication, the patient

needs to know about potential adverse

effects the medication could have on her

fetus or infant. The USFDA pregnancy

safety category (A,B,C,D & X) of the pre-

scribed or OTC drugs should always be

kept in mind when taking medications dur-

ing pregnancy. Children are the blessing

from above, maintaining their health and

welfare is the responsibility of every par-

ents from the time the baby in in the moth-

er’s womb. Prevention as far as we can is

always the better cure every now and then.
