(C&U) Focus on development of engineering graduates All companies and mentors to sign the new C&U Fastest and most effective way to develop a graduate is

through planned and structured training, Managed by an experienced and registered professional – the

mentor C&U offers guidance to companies and mentors alike

NEXT GENERATION OF ENGINEERING PROFESSIONALS

PLANNING PRINCIPLES

6

In planning workplace activities the following ingredients areessential:

o Activities must focus on required competencies (11 Exit Level

Outcomes)

o Activities must be varied

o Activities must increase Degree of Responsibility

o Activities must provide appropriate Levels of Development

Page 7: COMMITMENT AND UNDERTAKING OVERVIEW FOR · PDF file3 Response to the National Development Plan (NDP) ECSA developed the new Commitment and Undertaking (C&U) Focus on development of

months

B. Assisting Performs under close supervision

Limited for work output

Coaches and feedback

C. Participating Performs

under limited

supervision

Full for supervised work

Progressively reduces support 12 to

18 months

D. Contributing Performs with approval of work output

Full to supervisor for quality of work

Candidate articulates own reasoning and compares

E. Performing Works without supervision

Full as appropriate for a registered person

Candidate takes on without support/ limited guidance

12 months

4 Capability

CEs must demonstrate that they have the capability, independently or (at most) with limited

guidance, of performing the process and making the decisions required to reach the objectives

of each element and also that they have the capability of leading or supervising others in the

process.

3 Experience

CEs must demonstrate that they have, independently or under supervision, performed the

processes relating to each objective. Experience of the relevant techniques and functions must

be gained.

2 Knowledge

CEs must demonstrate that they have sufficient knowledge of how to carry out the processes that

are necessary to meet the objectives.

1 Appreciation

CEs must demonstrate that they have a general appreciation of the subject matter as well as of

the reasons for its inclusion in the training programme.

WHO IS INVOLVED?

15

Developing a candidate to professional competence is a TEAM effort

Candidate – who must commit to the process and put in the work etc.

Supervisor – who directs and controls the work of the candidate

Mentor – who guides and facilitates the professional development

Employer – who commits to providing the time and resources

Page 16: COMMITMENT AND UNDERTAKING OVERVIEW FOR · PDF file3 Response to the National Development Plan (NDP) ECSA developed the new Commitment and Undertaking (C&U) Focus on development of
