COMMERICAL BRITISH RED CROSS RESOURCE CENTRE CHELMSFORD, ESSEX CLIENT: THE BRITISH RED CROSS ARCHITECT: SURSHAM TOMPKINS & PARTNERS QUANTITY SURVEYOR: TOMPKINS ROBINSONS SURVEYOR VALUE: £1,250,000 CONTRACT PERIOD: 38 WEEKS This 38 week long project involved the construction of a new build two storey Resource Centre for The British Red Cross. The steel frame structure was constructed on land owned by the British Red Cross adjacent to their existing offices. These offices remained in use throughout the construction phase and were later sold in order to fund the construction of the new build. The scheme is currently awaiting a BREEAM rating. BREEAM assessments use recognised measure’s which are set against established benchmarks to evaluate a buildings environmental performance across it’s specification, design, construction and use. In order to achieve BREEAM several environmental measures were put in place throughout the project. These included the monitoring and reduction of electricity, water, C02 and waste levels and the utilisation of sustainable construction materials such as Forest Stewardship Council approved timber. Now complete The Resource Centre will be used as offices and a first aid training centre by the Red Cross. The ground floor of the building provides a reception, training room, staff office and breakout room with a large open plan office, meeting room and hot desk area on the first floor. Externally, a new pedestrian walkway from the main road to the building was created along with a car park and new boundary walls.
