STEP 1 Measure Camshaft Length. Length is measured from under the camshaft head to the beginning of the lock ring groove. (Measurement 1)

STEP 2 Measure the diameter of the Spider Journal

STEP 3 Measure the diameter of the Support Bushing Journal

STEP 4 Measure from under the cam head to the outside of the spider journal lock ring groove If there are two grooves measure the first (A) and then the second (B) spider journal groove

STEP 5 Count the number of Splines: 1-1/4” 10 or 24 spline; 1-1/2” 10 or 28 spline; 1-5/8” 28 or 37 spline; 1-3/4” 10 spline

STEP 6 Measure the diameter where the lock ring groove is at the end of the camshaft

STEP 7 Locate the Camshaft head type on Chart 1 below

CAM HEAD SIZE To identify the cam head size, measure across the points below:

ORIENTATION It is important to note that cam heads are Left and Right sided.

Camshafts with machine rolled and induction hardened shaft splines are strong and durable. Non-Hardened splines can wear prematurely and strip out.

Forged cam heads make for precision sizing and strength. Induction hardened heads give these cams long life and durability.

Worn cam heads cause erratic braking action

Precision machining assures correct journal diameter and proper concentricity between the cam head and shaft

Camshafts and bushings are matched components and should always be replaced together. Worn bushings and washers cause excessive camshaft deflection.

How Brake Camshafts Work

• Check camshaft radial play. If play exceeds 0.03”, check for worn bushings and camshaft journal.

• Check for broken or twisted splines.

• Check for a worn camshaft shaft, (flat spots, burnelling).

• Check for worn or undersized roller pins

When replacing the camshaft of your brakes on your truck, tractor or trailer, it is very important to replace the bushings, washers, seals and lock rings. These components should be replaced to avoid uneven wear between these items.

Such uneven wear can lead to excessive camshaft deflection, causing your brakes to function improperly or even fail.

The brake camshaft is a part of the brake linkage for heavy duty truck air brakes. The camshaft is the component responsible for spreading the brake shoes apart.

In air brake systems, the brake chamber expands and the operating rod pushes on the (brake) slack adjuster. As the operating rod pushes on the slack adjuster, it rotates around the shaft of the S-Cam. When the camshaft is rotated the eccentric shape of the cam head pushes the brake shoes apart. The brake shoes separate and cause friction between the brake lining and the brake drum. It is this friction that slows and stops the vehicle.
