Our coded welders and fabricators possess the skills and experience to work within the class requirements of DNV, Lloyds, RINA and BV on both steel and aluminium ship repairs and renewals, and new build modular fabrication.

Hull damage, repairs and renewals can be carried out either in dock or afloat. Skilled technical managers have experience in carrying out underwater repairs using innovative cofferdams designed by our in-house experts. Vast experience gained from working with numerous operators, vessels and directly for Incat, Austal, and BAE Systems, has given our operatives superior knowledge of jet propulsion systems, in-service repairs and technical inspections.

In 2009 we completed the world’s largest fast ferry conversion by transforming Incat hull no. 050 into ‘Manannan’, the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co’s flagship vessel. The conversion project transformed Incat hull no. 050 from a military specification vessel with a passenger capacity of 363 into Manannan, a fully fledged ship conversion with a 125% increase in passenger capacity to 820.

The conversion included a new aft accommodation module, a new sky lounge and a modified transom, including a 4-tonne stern loading ramp. The project was concluded with a state of the art interior refurbishment, including two independent modern passenger lift installations.

We possess all the necessary key skills in-house to carry out structural fabrication and project management on such a scale and have the necessary strategic partnerships in place with other key contractors to oversee an entire conversion project.

Burgess Marine directly manages major refits across Europe on a regular basis. Technical Managers are deployed both domestically and internationally, often at short notice, on a project management basis to oversee major structural renewals and repairs as well as main engine overhauls and replacements.

The business not only directly manages planned dockings it provides extensive skills support direct to operators and ship owners with regards to their own planned and emergency dockings.

A major part of Burgess Marine’s business is guaranteeing the availability of skilled project managers, coded steel and aluminium welder fabricators, OEM trained mechanical engineers and marine electricians to support dockings across the globe.

The business supports conventional commercial ship operators, the Superyacht sector and the ministry of defence via our long term purchasing agreement with BAE Systems in Portsmouth. This agreement allows us to utilise the facilities within HM Naval Base Portsmouth to include extensive workshops and six dry docks up to 180m in length

In recent years we have successfully supported dry dockings for a number of customers, including, but not limited to:

Burgess Marine has formally partnered with the Port of Cherbourg in support of the growing refit and repair market developing across the South Coast and the English Channel.

Since 2001, we have been the Port of Cherbourg’s primary engineering partner in respect of the Rolls-Royce Syncrolift facility in Cherbourg. The facility (with a lift 90m x 32m) comfortably caters for vessels over 90 metres in length, and offers a 4500 tons lift capacity. Having for many years utilised the facility specifically in support of High Speed Craft operated by Sea Containers, Condor Ferries and Brittany Ferries, we now intend to expand our commercial activities on the site in the support of both Superyachts and UK based ship owners and operators.

Skilled, experienced personnel that are capable of carrying out planned or emergency structural repairs and renewals, as well as mechanical repairs both above and below the waterline are routinely deployed, at short notice, from our various UK locations.

The Syncrolift, the largest and most modern in the region, is ideally located only 75 miles from Southampton and Portsmouth, 70 miles from Portland, and just 135 miles from the busy Dover Straits. The longevity of our partnership ensures lift rates are highly competitive and response times immediate.

The facilities at our Trafalgar Wharf site include a hangar of approximately 5,000m which houses three overhead 15T gantry cranes. The ship cradles can move vessels of around 60 metres in length overall and up to 877 tons using the railed system. There is also a movable internal rail system which operates throughout the hangar that allows for traversing and dry docking of multiple vessels, providing protection from the elements.

Maximum weight to be lifted (including vessel and cradles) is 1000 tons.

Maximum weight of vessel is 877 tons (approx). Weight of cradles and associated equipment is 123 tons (approx).

Maximum LOA of vessel to be lifted 60m (subject to vessel configuration).

Maximum beam of vessel is 13m (approx).

Maximum draft of vessel is 4.2m (approx).

The external hard-standing is approx. 66m x 27m and provides a solid and level working area with full access around vessels for cleaning down in readiness for painting.

The site benefits from a large wet dock, measuring 130m x 29m with an opening of 13m beam and a draft of 4.2m. The wet dock includes fixed pontoons and a sea wall. All working areas in the water are complete with services. As well as site wide infrastructure improvements, the ship lift has recently been fully refurbished, tested and certified. Project offices, equipment storage and welfare facilities are available to hire for the duration of your project.
