1.1.1 Key Benefits

• Deliver timely information for BI and decision support

• Enable operational reporting without impacting production databases

• Replicate data without the need to install software on source and target databases

• Cost savings and lower total cost of ownership (TCO)

• Faster return on investment with quick time-to-value

• Single view with central control

Functional Capabilities

Attunity Replicate is a change data capture (CDC) solution for easily replicating data between

different databases. This data can come from almost any source, for example web, application

or simply imported to the source database. Change data capture systems read changes made

to a source database as they are being written and then copies these changes to the target

database. This ensures the data in the target database is up to date with the source.

Change data capture has many benefits compared to traditional approaches of replicating

data including:

• Moving less data

• No reliance on batch windows or processing

• Real time synchronisation between source and target

• Reduced load on network

• Reduced resource overhead on source and target systems

There are a number of ways of capturing changes at the source, the 2 most common

approaches are log based CDC and trigger based CDC.

Log based CDC is where the CDC tool reads the changes being made to the source from the

transaction log of the database, without having to refer to the physical database tables.

Trigger based CDC creates a copy of every change made to a source table, copies the change

to another table in the database, which is then copied to the target database often in a batch

mode.

It is generally accepted that log based CDC is the better approach as it has less overheads and

does not require changes to the source database. Attunity Replicate.is a log based CDC

solution.

Attunity Replicate consists of a Web-based console and a replication server to replicate data

across heterogeneous data sources. These capabilities provide users with instant visibility to

current and historical exceptions, status, performance, and resource usage information.

Attunity Replicate can execute replication between enterprise databases including Oracle,

Microsoft SQL Server, and IBM DB2. It uses a "Click-2-Replicate" design that simplifies the

replication process by automating the steps required to build a replication solution. The

Attunity Replicate software is easy to learn and to implement.

Replication is log based, which means that only the changes are read. This reduces the impact

on the source databases.

Attunity Replicate can carry out two types of replication: Full Load and Change Processing

(CDC).

Attunity Replicate’s architecture facilitates replication to and from many enterprise data

sources and targets, including distributed databases (i.e. Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and

Sybase), data warehouses (i.e. Teradata, Pivotal Greenplum and Microsoft APS), mainframe (for

example DB2, IMS and VSAM), files and Hadoop platforms over a WAN or in the cloud It is

designed to deliver quick time-to-value with its:

● Attunity TurboStream CDC and TurboStream DX (Data Transfer): These next-

generation technologies significantly improve the performance and security of high

volume data delivery in a data centre, over WAN and to the cloud - enabling quick

time to value.

● ‘Click-2-Replicate’ design: significantly simplifying user experience by automating

the steps required to build a replication solution with packaged software that is fast

to learn and implement.

● Zero-footprint’ technology: reducing impact on IT operations with non-intrusive

design based on log-based capture and delivery of transaction data that does not

require the Attunity software to be installed on source and target databases.

Attunity Replicate is a simple but powerful solution that provides replication between various

databases. Attunity Replicate lets you do the following:

● Load data efficiently and quickly to operational data stores/warehouses.

● Create copies of production databases.

● Distribute data across databases.

Attunity Replicate has high throughput, speed, and scale. It is designed to scale and support

large-scale enterprise data replication scenarios with a multi-server, multi-task, and multi-

threaded architecture.

When you run an Attunity Replicate task, two types of replication can occur:

● Full Load: The full load process creates files or tables at the target database,

automatically defines the metadata that is required at the target, and populates the

tables with data from the source.

● Change Processing (CDC): Change processing captures changes in the source

data or metadata as they occur and applies them to the target database as

soon as possible in near-real-time.

Attunity Replicate offers a web-based and intuitive user experience that enables users to

quickly configure as well as monitor replication tasks. With its ‘Click-2- Replicate’ design,

Attunity Replicate automates the replication of database schemas, full tables (snapshot

replication), and incremental changes (using TurboStream CDC).

1.1.1.1 Scalability, Monitoring and Control

Attunity Replicate is designed to scale and support large-scale enterprise data replication

scenarios with a multi-server, multi-task, and multi-threaded architecture. But in order to

alleviate the burden of designing and managing complex data flow configurations across the

enterprise, Attunity Replicate relies on Attunity Maestro, a highly-scalable platform that

orchestrates and automates the data transmission and deployment processes of Big Data

projects.

When deployed in conjunction with the Attunity Maestro platform, Attunity Replicate alleviates

the burden of designing and managing complex business processes by providing a single

Page 6: Commercial-In-Confidence · capture to deliver real-time data replication. Attunity Replicate uses a graphical interface to configure replication task and the solution includes full

point of control for defining, executing and monitoring data transfer and distribution tasks

throughout an organization.

This enterprise-grade platform comes packaged with a web-based monitor that enables users

to instantly view the status of replication servers and tasks using a dashboard. This dashboard

presents metrics, gauges, and alert notifications. Using a browser, users can view and manage

the system from anywhere, making it easier than ever before to control data (e.g.

start/stop/reset replication tasks). In addition, logs are produced to support enterprise

management systems. Additionally, the solution can scale to handle the replication of

hundreds and thousands of databases and tables, leveraging high-speed extract and load

technology for snapshot replication and log-based change data capture (CDC) for incremental

replication (featuring TurboStream CDC) from Attunity Replicate.

1.1.1.2 Transactional and High Volume Replication

With TurboStream CDC and Data Transfer (DX)

Attunity Replicate uses TurboStream CDC, a new and innovative change data capture (CDC)

technology that provides key optimizations for data warehousing. Using the specific data

warehouses’ native features and utilities, the technology optimizes the data delivery process

for optimal performance and agility. By replicating only the changes made to the source

database systems, the log-based CDC technology ensures efficiency and minimal impact.

Attunity’s TurboStream DX is innovative, highly secured and resilient. Its WAN transfer engine

optimizes transfer speeds when target databases are located off premises or in the cloud. Its

architecture is resilient to unpredictable events such as network outages, and includes

seamless recovery from interrupted transfers from the exact point of failure with 3-levels of

built-in security protocol.

1.1.1.3 Schema and DDL Replication

Attunity Replicate automates the generation of the target database based on the metadata

definitions of the source schema. Furthermore, it can capture changes made to the source

database schema (e.g. adding new tables or columns, changing data types) and replicate those

dynamically to the target. This simplifies and accelerates the process of handling metadata

changes to ensure the target is always in sync with the source.

Attunity Replicate is designed to work in a multitude of platform architectures. The Replicate

software can be run on cloud platforms including Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure or in a

chosen hosted environment. Where Replicate is required to work with existing non-cloud

based infrastructure it can still deliver data to the cloud, either being located in the cloud or on

premise, and can be migrated between when required.
