Variable speeddrives ...HYDROVAR®
HYDROVAR® – the intelligent and user friendlyspeed controller for pumps!
HYDROVAR® is a pump or wall-mounted variable speed,
microprocessor based system controller, and was the world’s
first of its type to manage motor speed and match pump
performance to a range of hot and cold water applications.
Due to the unique modular design the HYDROVAR® unit can be
mounted or retrofitted to any existing centrifugal pump which
has a standard IEC motor.
This is the long-awaited solution for high-level installations
requiring failsafe systems with a superior range of features,
while its modularity also provides a cost-effective solution for
low-level, reduced feature demands.
The HYDROVAR® needs no additional master control and
enables virtually any configuration of pumps: up to 8 master
drives or a mix of master and slave drives.
The units are available in powers from 1.1 - 525 kW.
The HYDROVAR® does much more than just change the motor
speed. It truly manages your pump performance to match a wide
range of system conditions, allowing energy savings up to 70%
(approved byTUEV Austria)*
* Tests carried out by TUEV Austria (Austrian testing authority) on 5 March 2005 based
on comparative tables and data on intake performance at identical flow.
The HYDROVAR® eliminates the need for:Expensive additional master control panels and circuitry.
System control valves.
Large pressure vessels.
Features:Sizes available 1.1 – 45 kW.
Extension up to 525 kW with Hydrovar Smart.
Shuts off at zero demand.
Easy to integrate into BMS systems - ModBus communication
included as standard.
Can be mounted directly on any standard IEC motors.
Included 2 line LCD display.
Enclosure IP 55 protection.
Up to 8 HYDROVAR® pumps can be connected to one system.
2 sensor inputs for implementing of two actual value signals
within one system (min/max, difference) or for a second sensor
for safety reasons (Master Inverter).
Different types of sensors supported (4-20mA, 0-20mA,
0-10Vdc, 2-10Vdc).
Energy savings up to 70%.
Error Log with Time and date stamp.
Extended manual control mode with different fixed speed
values selectable via external contact.
16
Typical examples of applicationMaintaining a constant pressure, as in water boosting or irrigation.
Maintains a constant flow, as in water supply.
Compensating for losses in a system (following a system curve),
as in heating systems.
Control of pump performance by temperature sensors.
Emptying or filling tanks by level probes.
Control of boiler feed water.
Energy savingsEnergy saving is a large issue within the heating and ventilation marketand within the Lowara product portfolio we can offer a variable speeddrive, the HYDROVAR®. A unique parameter gives the HYDROVAR® an
added advantage. This parameter allows the pump to follow a system
curve, the minimum system head is set together with the maximum andthe pump will then operate between these two points. This option hasbeen specifically developed for use in the heating industry as it allowsthe user to save up to 70% energy costs over a fixed speed pump.
Typical energy savings
HYDROVAR® booster setsThe HYDROVAR® allows up to 8 units to be interfaced
together which offers the user ultimate flexibility.
The pumps have an automatic cyclic changeover facility and
in the case of failure the remaining pump/s take up the duty.
Retro-fittingThe HYDROVAR® speed controller can be mounted or retro-fitted to any
existing centrifugal pump manufacturer’s unit, which has a standard IEC
motor. The units are available in powers from 0.75kW to 525kW.
The units can be mounted directly on to the pump motor (horizontal or
vertical) or can be wall mounted.
The HYDROVAR® can also be connected by cable to another control
system with microprocess or using a included ModBus interface.
This enables the Hydrovar system to send information about the system
conditions to an external unit, and to be controlled from a distance.

Suction DiffusersThe Lowara Suction Diffuser is an angle pattern flow
straightening fitting that combines a diffuser-strainer orifice
cylinder and full length straightening vanes to provide ideal
flow conditions for the pump suction. It saves space and
money by eliminating the need for long or short radius
elbows, reducing flanges, and long lengths of pipe leading
into the suction side of the pump. Its full length
straightening vanes help provide a fully uniform flow
pattern into the pump, reducing uneven stress on the
pump impeller and shaft and extending the life of the pump.
Lowara Suction Diffusers are available in a wide range of
sizes, from 65mm to 250mm.
Triple Duty Valves andSuction Diffusers
Combination Surge Arrestor and Air Release ValvePipe system protector, dampens effect of water-hammer at
pump start up on fixed speed booster sets. Provides vacuum
protection when the pump stops and the riser drains.
Available in 1” or 2” BSP female thread.
Triple Duty ValvesThe Lowara Triple Duty Valve is a combination valve that
provides all of the functions normally required on the
discharge side of hydronic pump systems. The design
combines three valves into one: a calibrated balance
valve, a spring loaded check valve, and an isolation/
shut-off valve. The combination of multiple valves helps
save space and reduces installation time and money.
Sizes available from 65mm to 350mm
Maximum working pressure 8 Bar
Maximum temperature of pumped liquid: 120°c

Plate Heat Exchangers
Plate and Frame Heat Exchangers
GPX technology offers maximum efficiency in less space, with
outstanding application flexibility.Innovative plate design
allows GPX heat exchangers to provide more heat transfer
using less space. They perform with one-third to one-fifth the
surface area of conventional shell and tube heat exchangers
designed for the same application.
Features and Benefits
GPX models have higher surface area to volume ratios than
conventional shell and tube heat exchangers.
GPX offer superior heat transfer coefficients compared to
shell and tube heat exchangers.
GPX offers “true” countercurrent flow, which maximizes the
mean temperature difference between fluids.
Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers
Lowara Brazed Plate Heat Exchangers offer the highest level
of thermal efficiency and durability in a compact, low cost
unit. The corrugated plate design provides very high heat
transfer coefficients resulting in a more compact design.
The unit’s stainless steel plates are vacuum brazed together
to form a durable, integral piece that can withstand high
pressure and temperature.
Our Heat Exchangers are available in many different model
sizes ranging from ¾” to 2” BSP port size and are ideal for
industrial oil cooling, refrigerant evaporators and con-
densers, and residential and light commercial HVAC
hydronic systems. Larger sizes than 2” are available on
request, please contact our sales office.
22

Energy Audit
Fluid handling pumps, fans, compressors and motorsaccount for over 60% of energy usage, 24.8% on pumpapplications. With the EU Energy Commission’s Energy EfficiencyDirective (EED) came into force in December 2012, energymanagement and pumping system performance have fastbecome key focus areas for a range of businesses. According to the legislation, EU members need to fullyimplement the directive within buildings and industrialprocesses from the 5th June 2014. The most effective wayof assessing a building’s pumping efficiency is to undertakea full system energy audit. Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are excluded for the timebeing. For non SMEs, energy audits should be carried outin an independent and cost-effective manner or implement-ed and supervised by independent authorities undernational legislation three years after entry into force of thisdirective and the process must be repeated at least everyfour years from the date of the previous energy audit. However, in line with the EED, an energy audit must be carried out by a Certified Pump System Auditor (CPSA)scheme accredited pumping engineer. Lowara have twonow such CPSA’s for conducting energy audits. For more information on how Lowara can help you, go towww.lowara.co.uk
