Our experience includes all aspects of
a flat-work project including pavement
design, drainage, striping, lighting and
signage, and NAVAID design.
AIRSIDE AND LANDSIDE PAVEMENTS
Because of our close working relationship with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and experience designing numerous pavement projects, our team is familiar with design procedures and guidelines required at commercial, general aviation and military airports.
When commercial flights began to take
off, convenience of passengers wasn’t
much of a concern. Simply getting them
from point A to point B was a feat in
and of itself. As the years have passed,
however, the needs and comfort level of
passengers have come to the forefront
as airlines and the industries that
support them recognized the role
of passengers in profitability.
Today, travelers’ comfort is critical
to the design process. Even before
arriving at the terminal, people need
to feel at ease with the process.
Burns & McDonnell works with airline
and airport clients to lessen friction
from the first step onto the property
through boarding at the gate.
By working with airlines and
stakeholders, we make design and
construction of terminal improvements
as seamless as possible for travelers and
airport staff alike. Whether the project
is parking improvements, wayfinding,
security or concessions, communication
is key in creating a positive airport
experience for passengers.
AVIATION PLANNING
We have partnered with aviation clients since the 1940s, equipping our design and construction teams to get any airport project off the ground.

EXPERIENCE
1 AIRSIDE AND LANDSIDE AIRPORT PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (APMS)Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA)Southern CaliforniaDetermining the reliable load
carrying capacity and reliable
service life and limitation of
pavements is fundamental to
the management of an airport’s
core business. Our team — the
prime firm among 11 subconsultants
— is updating the Airport Pavement
Management System (APMS) for
three LAWA airports in Southern
California. Using automated and
manual data collection techniques
via customized software on tablet
computers for field surveys, our
team will inspect more than 100
million square feet of airside and
landside pavement at Los Angeles
International Airport (LAX), LA/
Ontario International Airport and
Van Nuys Airport. LAWA will
prioritize its pavement maintenance
and capital improvement project
plan through this second phase of
the APMS program.
2 DELTA AIR LINESLaGuardia AirportNew York, New YorkDelta Air Lines is the primary
tenant at Terminals C and D
at LaGuardia Airport and has
made significant upgrades to the
facilities. The airline completed the
first phase of its long-term plans in
2014. We are the prime consultant
for the next phase optimization, a
four-year program that began in
2015. Our team will provide
project management, engineering
and construction administration
services for the major mechanical
systems in Terminals C and D. This
includes repairs and replacement
of cooling towers, chillers, air
handling units, VAV systems,
pumps and other equipment.
3 RUNWAY 1R-19L REHABILITATION
Kansas City International AirportKansas City, MissouriThe airport’s original Runway 1R-19L
and its taxiway connectors have
severe durability cracking that is
becoming progressively worse
and creating the potential for
foreign object debris (FOD). We
are providing civil and electrical
consulting for the Kansas City
Aviation Department for this
project and associated pavements
within the runway safety area.
Phasing considerations for this
project include development of
a complex construction safety
and phasing plan (CSPP) for
rehabilitating these pavements
while maximizing airfield operational
access on the intersecting crosswind
runway complex.

EXPERIENCE
5 MIDFIELD SATELLITE CONCOURSE PROGRAMLos Angeles International AirportLos Angeles, CaliforniaLos Angeles International Airport
(LAX) is the nation’s third-busiest
airport in annual passengers and
the fifth-busiest airport in annual
aircraft operations. Because
the main terminal complex was
constructed in 1961, its facilities
must be continually updated and
maintained to meet the needs of
airlines and travelers in the 21st
century. The Midfield Satellite
Concourse North Project is part of
a multibillion-dollar modernization
program at the terminal complex.
We are providing all ramp services,
engineering assistance, special
systems design, and aviation fueling
design services for the program.
6 GROUND TRANSPORTATION STAGING FACILITYAustin-Bergstrom International AirportAustin, TexasAustin-Bergstrom International
Airport required new security
systems and automatic vehicle
identification (AVI) for a new ground
transportation and staging facility
to manage taxicabs, shuttle buses
and limousines serving the airport.
We designed the AVI for the staging
lot with parking for 130 taxis, shuttle
buses and eight over-the-road tour
buses, a full-service building for
drivers, and lot entry and exit gates.
We also designed high definition and
standard cameras to cover indoor
and parking areas, integrating them
with the existing CCTV infrastructure
for monitoring transportation vehicles
and automatically dispatching taxis
from the staging lot to the curb.
4 SYSTEM TERMINAL RETRO-COMMISSIONING AND CONDITION ASSESSMENT PROGRAMHouston AirportsHouston, TexasThe Houston Airport System
(HAS) wanted to optimize and
improve its facility infrastructure
as its systems and equipment
have aged and in many cases were
never commissioned. Our team
performed condition assessments
combined with retro-commissioning
for more than 6 million square
feet of infrastructure at William P.
Hobby Airport (HOU), George Bush
Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and
IAH’s consolidated rental car facility.
