NAVARRO, CAMILLE S. I concur with Mr. Cuevas that “The study of Philippine literature is important because it is the reflection of our history.” It is one way of becoming mindful of the past and its effects. Since it is primarily taught in school, Filipinos especially the younger generation become aware of the fact that the present state of Philippine literature is certainly a product of the past. We are able to understand why we are not able to develop our own literature and we are apprised of the reasons that hinder its development even at present time. Our past illuminates the cause of the current struggle in literary development and its possible effect in the future. The occurrences in the past serve as a warning for us not to repeat our past mistakes that lead to literary stagnation. Through the progress brought by education, Filipinos become more aware of social realities. The study of Philippine literature can be a source of inspiration to Filipino writers to write literary pieces in our own language.
