The SPEAKER Mike Dombeck

One of the most renowned and respected contemporary conservationists, Mike Dombeck serves as pioneer professor of global environmental management at UW-Stevens Point and a UW System fellow of global conservation. Before coming to UWSP, he dedicated a quarter of a century to managing federal lands and natural resources in the long-term public interest. His leadership in the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and as former chief of the Forest Service had an impact on nearly 500 million acres. His legacy is one of steadfast stewardship for the land, and he is most noted for significant efforts toward watershed health and restoration, sustainable forest ecosystem management, sound forest roads and roadless area protection.

He has written and edited numerous popular and scholarly articles and his book, "Watershed Restoration: Principles and Practices." He has also made frequent national and international scientific presentations.

At UWSP, Dombeck leads the planning and development of the Global Environmental Management Education Center. The $70 million project aims to develop and share educational programs in natural resources and environmental management for building a sustainable future locally and abroad.

Red and white honor cords represent Lambda Pi Eta, the Communication Honor Society.

Colored sashes are worn by students who have spent one or more semesters abroad and represent the host countries of UWSP's semester abroad program: Australia, England, France, Germany, Poland and Spain.

Twisted cords of white, black and blue are worn by students who are members of Omicron Delta Kappa, the National Leadership Honor Society.

The blue, brown and gold honor cord represents Gamma Theta Upsilon, the International Geographical Honor Society.

Twisted cords of green and purple are worn by students who are members of the Kappa Delta Pi Education Honor Society.

Twisted cords of purple, white and gold represent Phi Upsilon Omicron, the Family and Consumer Sciences National Honor Society.

The cloisonne enamel on brass-finish medallion which hangs from a red, grosgrain ribbon depicts the symbol and greek letters for Pi Sigma Alpha, the National Political Science Honor Society.

Phi Kappa Phi Phi Kappa Phi is a national honor society that encourages superior scholarship in all academic disciplines and recognizes those persons of good character who have excelled in scholarship. The names of those students who have earned this distinction are noted in the commencement program.

Undergraduate DONORS The faculty has established a program of academic honors to recognize undergraduate students for outstanding academic achievement. Students who have earned undergraduate honors are designated by one of three symbols within the commencement program.

There are three levels of undergraduate academic honors, which are awarded on the basis of grade point average for all courses attempted. Those students graduating cum laude have achieved an overall grade point average of 3.5 to 3. 74; those graduating magna cum laude have earned an overall grade point average of 3. 75 to 3.89. Those achieving a summa cum laude designation have earned an overall grade point average of 3.9 or above.

University of Wisconsin STEVENS POINT

On September 17, 1894, Stevens Point Normal School opened its doors to 13 faculty members and its first class of 300 students. Today, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is a leading comprehensive university serving more than 8, 700 students with 95 undergraduate and 16 graduate programs.

UWSP is a 435-acre campus that includes 13 major academic and administrative buildings, 14 residence halls, three residence centers and Schmeeckle Reserve, a 275-acre nature preserve with a 24-acre lake adjacent to campus. Students choose from 48 majors and 75 minors, and learn from more than 400 faculty members. The student-to-faculty ratio is about 20 to one. Over 180 extracurricular student organizations are also a part of the UWSP learning experience.

Everything - the majors and minors offered by four colleges, the co­curricular and campus activities, the innovative classroom technology and field internship choices, the international opportunities and residential living experiences - has been designed with students and their futures in mind. UWSP's student-centered approach to learning provides students with a transformational experience that helps them prepare a strong foundation for the future, develop relationships that are central to their lives and discover the s in1 the process.

UW-Stevens Point ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Alumni Association welcomes our Spring 2003 graduates to the ranks of UWSP alumni. To honor this occasion, members of the Student Alumni Association will present each new alumnus with the gift of a UWSP key chain. We hope this will serve as a reminder that, no matter where life may lead our graduates, they will always have a home at UWSP.

The Alumni Association serves to strengthen the ties between 55,000 Pointer alumni and their university home. Our alumni are among this university's most important assets and collectively constitute a major force in shaping the reputation of our campus.

The association seeks to help alumni stay in touch with former classmates and friends who have graduated from UWSP to make their mark, professionally and personally, on the nation and the world. The association also provides a variety of services to alumni and friends of UWSP, including the Pointer Alumnus newspaper, alumni reunions, homecoming, alumni travel, alumni directories and other special events.

All graduates and anyone who has attended UWSP are automatic, lifetime members of the non-dues paying association. Support for the Alumni Association is provided in part by the UWSP Foundation, by proceeds from an alumni endowment and by gifts from alumni and friends.
