CHAIR CITATIONCindy BosleyMasonic PathwaysWe are pleased to recognize Cindy Bosley for the Chair Citation Award. Cindy is the soon-to-be-retired Chief Executive Officer of the Michigan Masonic Home where she has worked for 25 years, serving as the CEO for the last 15. Cindy is not only the longest-tenured CEO

in the 127-year history of the Masonic Home; she is also the only woman to have served in that capacity.

Under her leadership the Masonic Home has generally maintained a five-star rating, begun a PACE program, acquired another nursing facility and realized financial gains from its operations in every year since 2007 whereas the Home had never posted an operating gain in its 106 preceding years. Cindy would be the first person to tell you that she did not accomplish these things on her own, but in fact she has a gift for recognizing the gifts and strengths of all the people around her thereby facilitating their success as well as her own.

Cindy also served as a member of the board of LeadingAge Michigan for many years and provided visionary leadership as the board chairman. She has provided valuable informal counsel in the years following the official end of her board service.

Cindy is wrapping up a career marked by accomplishment, initiative, collaboration and integrity. In grateful recognition of all she has accomplished, for all her service and for the person she is, we wish her & hers a much deserved long, prosperous and joyful retirement.

ADVOCACY AWARDTom NobelBaruch Senior MinistriesIn 2010, Baruch Ministries was denied its request for property tax exemption, real and personal, under Michigan Law by their local Township. The Township’s denial for the 2010, 2011, and 2012 tax years, was based upon the notion that Baruch Ministries did not

meet its burden of proof to demonstrate that they were, in fact, a charitable institution. And so, Tom Nobel, President and CEO of Baruch, began his journey with an appeal to The Michigan Tax Tribunal.

Tom convinced that Baruch Ministries did meet the standard as a charitable institution, continued his appeal to The Michigan Court of Appeals. While The Court of Appeals did reverse part of the MTT’s decision, it also held that Baruch was not entitled to the exemptions, stating that Baruch Ministries, by limiting the availability of its income-based subsidy, had offered its services on a discriminatory basis and did not meet one of the charitable tests in the law. Again, Baruch Ministries and Tom Nobel stood strong and argued that regardless of what its policies state, in reality it serves low income individuals. Tom and Baruch Ministries, having come this far, took the next step and filed an appeal in the Michigan Supreme Court. Ultimately, the Michigan Supreme Court decided to hear oral arguments on their case.

In the end, the Michigan Supreme Court agreed with Tom Nobel and Baruch Ministries by stating “the lower courts did not consider Baruch’s policies with the proper understanding of the key factors in Michigan case law” and the Court vacated the Court of Appeals’ and Tax Tribunal’s opinions in part and remanded this case to the Tax Tribunal for further proceedings.

Tom and Baruch Ministries, when faced with injustice, invested countless hours and more than $200,000 in legal fees for the original lawsuit. Since the Court’s precedent-setting decision in favor of Baruch Ministries and not-for-profit organizations across Michigan, Baruch Ministries has been able to recoup $2 Million in back taxes and $170,000 in interest owed them.

Because of Tom’s courage and personal resolve to take on this challenge, knowing the investment of time and treasure that would be required, tonight we are proud to recognize our colleague and friend, Mr. Tom Nobel, as LeadingAge Michigan’s 2018 Advocacy Award recipient.

LEADING EDGE CARE & SERVICESChef Timothy England & Farm to Fork Fine Dining Beacon Hill at EastgateExecutive Chef Timothy England’s role in food service is to live out the mission of Beacon Hill to enhance community among residents, staff, and the Eastgate neighborhood. For Tim, community is expressed by collaboration with food service staff and residents, creativity in food planning and preparation, and commitment to excellence at all levels.

Most of all, Tim excels in developing personal relationships with his constituents and helping them connect through the wonder and pleasure of eating together. One of Tim’s greatest joys is working with the culinary team to encourage them to use their gifts and imagination to create new recipes. Tim has created a culinary think tank. They are always trying different things. He also invites the Beacon Hill residents to submit their favorite recipes, often using them and giving them the credit. Chef Tim has been quoted saying “Our mission, from the food itself to the presentation, service, and ambiance, is to provide excellence in food service in order to enhance community. Why can’t a retirement home have 4 star fine dining? Why can’t we be the best restaurant in the area? We want food to be appetizing and taste good especially because food is one of the few joys some residents have. Food is also a prime way in which we can form community.” There is a half-acre community garden on the Beacon Hill property with 24 plots. Not only does Chef Tim and his team grow most of the vegetables and herbs and some fruit used at Beacon Hill, but he invites residents to till their own plot. Beacon Hill advertises the produce that is raised by residents and donated to the kitchen by listing it on the menu such as ‘Mr. Larsen’s Tomatoes.’ According to Chef Tim, “It’s all about getting involved and interacting with the residents. It’s where my heart is. I wouldn’t know anything else.”

LEADING EDGE CARE & SERVICESMemory ProjectEHM Senior Solutions & It’s Never 2 LateEHM Senior Solutions [EHM] is known for its innovative and technology-advanced programs targeted to serve individuals with memory loss or memory impairment. EHM’s Memory Support Center at Brecon Village in Saline, Michigan, strives to normalize the aging process and the

impact of declining memory for individuals faced with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Since 2010, EHM served nearly 800 individuals affected by memory impairment. Recently EHM partnered with Saline Area Schools, and It’s Never 2 Late (iN2L) a national technology provider focused on client engagement and life enriching experiences for persons with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and generalized memory impairment. EHM embarked on a project with the students in order to create a real-life personalized video experience to use with hand-held tablets over the course of four months. The iN2L handheld device provides brain fitness and memory “games” and, most importantly, personal photos and video contents to prompt reminiscence and memory therapy, elicit responses from a non-responsive dementia client, and even encourage simple conversation or nonverbal interactions such as laughter and smiles. This technology solution and joint project was designed to “bridge the gap” in a relationship between a fast paced millennial high school student and an older adult with memory impairment. The relationships formed crossed generational and intellectual barriers.

LEADING EDGE CARE & SERVICESWendy Brightman & UMRC Foundation United Methodist Retirement CommunitiesThe UMRC Foundation has elevated the field of philanthropy in the aging sector. Under Wendy’s leadership over the past five years, the UMRC Foundation has undergone a complete transformation from an organization that, on average, received $1.3 Million per year in contributions to a record of nearly $22 Million in just over two years. In

early 2013, the organization worked with consultants to assess its activities. Out of that assessment, the consultants made 37 recommendations to upgrade the Foundation’s activities and implement best practices. UMRC team was able to accomplish all of them within an 18-month period. These changes required a great deal of updates to the bylaws, staff training, and financial commitment. The Foundation invested in its philanthropic efforts both financially and emotionally. The UMRC President and CEO embraced his role in the fundraising process and attended the Lilly School of Philanthropy at Indiana University along with the UMRC Foundation President and other key staff members to learn best practices. The UMRC Foundation team rebranded itself and was able to re-engage many donors who had been neglected for years. Steadily, with passion and purpose, these donors plus hundreds of new ones embraced the Foundation’s efforts and reinvested in their mission. Over the next 26 months, the UMRC Foundation raised over $21.7 million and brought in 6 of the top 10 largest gifts to the aging sector in the nation over the last 10 years. Compiling best practices, training, knowledge and fortitude, the UMRC Foundation has become the benchmark for how senior living organizations can benefit from philanthropy across the country. The UMRC Foundation has changed the landscape of senior living!

INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARElaine J. Beresh Jewish Senior Life Whether you’re lunching in the Bistro, singing in the Brown Adult Day Program, or baking in the Memory Care Pavilion, Jewish Senior Life’s fairy godmother, Elaine J. Beresh, the most kind-hearted and charitable friend, will be there. Elaine took Jewish Senior Life by storm when she hit the ground running in the early 2000s. Her impact is profound; her desire to

give has no bounds. Elaine is a unique combination of donor and doer, and believes each is as important as the next. Even before her mother moved into JSL’s assisted living residence, she could be spotted at JSL up to five times a week. She has also served as the Jewish Auxiliary President for multiple terms, and remains instrumental on both the FRIENDS, and the Brown Adult Day Program advisory boards as co-chair.

In addition to her hands on volunteer work, Elaine is exceptionally philanthropic. She generously sponsors holiday and birthday parties for residents and staff. Every year at Passover, she sponsors a model Seder on the Memory Care Pavilion and invites all residents’ family and friends to enjoy. She also sponsors the Brown Center annual winter party for more than 100 people. She purchases amenities and special extras when needed and champions fundraising opportunities. On Christmas, Elaine provides meals for the staff. Elaine donated the funds to renovate our Multipurpose Room, a space where our residents and staff gather for social and professional activities. Although Elaine generally prefers anonymity, she believes her donations, if shared, may inspire others to give. Elaine’s gifts continue to significantly enhance and enrich the lives of residents on a daily basis.

GROUP VOLUNTEER OF THE YEARProject OutreachGlacier Hills & University of MichiganThe University of Michigan’s Project Outreach program has impacted Glacier Hills Senior Living Community for over 13 years. Project Outreach is a course offered at the University of Michigan combining classroom learning with practical experience in a healthcare setting. Each student

invests 40 hours per semester with our residents. Approximately 60 students are assigned to Glacier Hills each semester. Over the years, Project Outreach has become an integral part of Glacier Hills’ volunteer program.

Project Outreach students volunteer all over campus including one-on-one visits with residents, helping with games, discussion groups, and crafts. They accompany residents to concerts, religious services and programs. Project Outreach has expanded over the past three years to include a music section. Musicians perform in the households five days per week. The team of volunteers has increased Glacier Hills’ ability to provide the important one-to-one attention. The commitment the University of Michigan Project Outreach program and the Faculty Coordinator for the program - Dr. Jerry Miller - have made to Glacier Hills allows them to continue to provide extraordinary service to their residents.

SHINING STARKathleen LeslieBurcham HillsKathleen has been blessed with a servant spirit for those who struggle with dementia. From the residents to the family and friends who grapple with the changes of their loved ones, Kathleen is the calm, educated, supportive figure they can rely on. Kathleen accepted the position of Memory Care Manager at Burcham Hills in June 2014. Starting at the foundation, Kathleen began

educating not only the Burcham Community, but has also spent many hours outside of the building sharing her knowledge of dementia at the Sparrow Senior Health Series and at local senior centers. Through presentations and hands-on trainings Kathleen systematically created an environment of better understanding of the needs of a person with dementia. Kathleen shares a lot of focus on the day to day living environment of those with dementia. Not only did she work to create neighborhoods with calming décor, resident-produced artwork, and a staff that encourages positive interaction, but she also added several specialized interventions. A sensory room was designed by Kathleen complete with a bubble wall, aromatherapy, quiet music and tactile blankets. She implemented the warm, aromatherapy wash towels as well as the Music and Memory program. The most impactful change that Kathleen created in the Memory Care programming at Burcham Hills was the addition of two new neighborhoods for residents with dementia called, Assisted Connections. This program creates an environment for residents whose dementia affects their judgment and safety awareness, yet continue with all of their physical care needs. Kathleen initiated the Assisted Connections program in fall of 2015 to encompass a need that was lacking in memory care programs of the area. Kathleen continuously strives to support those affected by dementia. She has many more ideas for creating complementary interventions and living environments that will generate a meaningful, purposeful life for elders. We can expect to see Kathleen’s positive impact spread through the Lansing area and beyond as her brilliant intellect and kind hearted spirit break down the obstacles of dementia care.

SHINING STARJake JazwinskiSt. Ann’sJake Jazwinski is a West Michigan native who remains dedicated to his family, community and the senior care industry. Currently, he is Director of Environmental Services for St. Ann’s, providing hands-on leadership to the environmental services, housekeeping, and laundry teams. Jake continues to pursue his professional career path through LeadingAge leadership courses. As Jake has progressed on his professional career path, his loyalty to team and residents has grown exponentially. In addition to ensuring daily needs are met, Jake has the ability to focus on the big picture, and during the past two years in particular, helped St. Ann’s make significant improvements to its core buildings and systems, while working in tandem with architects, building trades, and vendors to meet a commitment to refurbish dozens of Assisted Living apartments and remodel Rehabilitation Services rooms and an activities center. CARING SPIRITBetsy MianeckiThe Village of East HarborBetsy started at The Village of East Harbor as a fitness instructor. Her super charged personality made her a resident favorite. It was soon evident her talents were needed to revamp the Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care activity programs. Her infectious laugh, boundless energy, and creative programming took the activity programs

to an all new level. The building became alive with activities. She was so successful at creating new programming, attendance quadrupled, and she helped create materials for programs that the community attended. She revamped the programming from top to bottom. She developed and created new programming from Men’s Club to Mystery Trips with Betsy where residents do not know where they are going until they get there. Betsy’s positive personality, enthusiasm, compassionate spirit, sense of adventure and creativity are loved and appreciated by all. It is not unusual for residents to comment and wonder how she ever does get everything done that she manages to. She is truly loved.

CARING SPIRITTheresa LightfootEHM Senior SolutionsThe mere mention of Theresa’s name brings about an immediate smile to those who work with her. Theresa never calls off for work, never gives less than her best, and often re-cleans an area that is not up to her high standard of cleanliness. She is an employee who give 110% every single day she arrives at work. Theresa is a model employee who is resident-

focused, hard-working, friendly, and passionate about helping the residents whenever asked. Theresa humbly mentions how she enjoys talking to the residents while she cleans their rooms, and listening to the stories about their lives. Recently, Theresa was tasked with re-purposing fifty bedspreads within the facility. Rather than throw these away or leave them in storage, Theresa washed, folded and boxed all of these items until she could ensure they were given to individuals in need. Theresa organized the donation of over fifty bedspreads to the Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team (MCREST). MCREST provides homeless and displaced individuals the opportunity for successful transition to independence and Theresa coordinated this needed donation during the coldest week of the year. Theresa serves as an example to her colleagues by maintaining her high standard of work and encourages them to go the extra mile. If a resident has a special request, Theresa will contact the appropriate person to ensure that their request is answered and that their overall care is excellent. Theresa has found the perfect role that allows her to meaningfully engage with seniors while helping them stay clean and comfortable in their “home”.

2018 MEMBER AWARDS GALA 15

TRUSTEE OF THE YEARJacob StoltzfusThurston Woods VillageJake came to the Thurston Woods Village (TWV) Board in 1993, as part of the Mennonite representation. Although living in Goshen, Indiana he became an important member of the board, accepting the position of Vice Chair at a time when the Board of Directors was conducting a CEO search, and chairing the search committee. He made the recommendation

to the Board of Directors to hire the first female CEO in the Mennonite Health Services organizations history. While this does not seem like a “big deal” in today’s standards, it is important to understand that his influence was one that broke the glass ceiling in the way women in leadership roles were evaluated within the Mennonite organization. Today there are dozens of women in these roles across the country - largely due to Jacob’s insistence on hiring the best person for the job regardless of gender. Jacob served from 1993 to 2006, before he was forced to retire from the board due to term limits. During his first tenure on the Thurston Woods Village board he was responsible for securing the major gifts to purchase a 14 passenger bus. While he never was one to draw attention to himself, it was well known one of the major gifts was from Jacob and his wife Barb. He served as Board Chair for 9 of the years. Then after a short absence, Jacob rejoined the Board of Directors in 2008, fulfilling a partial term before being appointed to his first 3-year term in 2009, again becoming a vital member of the TWV Board. He continued to provide his personal resources, as well as his time and talent as the campus continued its growth and development. Jacob served until January, 2015 when a health issue forced his resignation from the board. However, Jacob continues to meet with the board in a non-voting capacity, and continues to provide the financial resources when projects are presented to him. He truly represents what every board member should be - someone who loves the community, the residents, the staff, and provides for future development.

TRUSTEE OF THE YEARGeorge B. Millush, Jr.Presbyterian Villages of MichiganGeorge is now retired from being the Director of Financial Process Planning for Daimler-Chrysler, a unique position dedicated to process, systems, and organization development in pursuit of achieving best practice processes in finance. His talent and experience have been instrumental in the growth and success of Presbyterian Villages of Michigan (PVM) while he served

two consecutive terms as PVM Board Chair and previously as the Chair of The Village of Oakland Woods Board.
