It is our distinct honor and privilege to welcome you to this 125th anniversary celebration – an important milestone in the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine’s history. We want thank you all for taking the time from your busy schedules (or retired life!) to join us for this occasion. It is so wonderful to be in the company of so many alumni, students, faculty, staff, longtime friends and colleagues. The 125th celebration features a packed and varied program of events that includes continuing education courses, breakfasts, lunches, and a grand party to celebrate 125 years of educational excellence. We have a historic event with the deans - A Conversation with the Deans of the School of Dental Medicine. This event will showcase the school’s history during their time as dean. The Dittrick Museum of Medical History has recently opened an exhibit highlighting the dental profession and the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.

The celebration marks the strong links between alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends. The theme for our yearlong celebration is “125 Years of Excellence.” We kicked off the celebration last fall during Homecoming and Reunion. Then we held events in various cities to visit with alumni and bring the excitement to them. Now we’ve returned home to have the BIGGEST celebration the school has had to date – our Quasquicentennial Anniversary.

The celebration allows us to shine a bright light on the achievements and contributions made by our students, faculty and alumni that have defined the CWRU SODM as a top-tier institution making a global impact. As we look back at our history, we know we cannot rest on our laurels. We must begin to move into our next 125 years with the vision that continues to propel us to the forefront, allowing our impact to reach the local community, the national community and the global community.

Many thanks to the Alumni Association Board of Directors for serving as the planning committee to determine the many events, speakers and activities to include recognition of extraordinary alumni. Special thanks to our Department of Development and Alumni Relations, who handled the logistics of this important celebration.

We thank the many sponsors who offered support for our anniversary and our students. You will find them listed throughout this book and we encourage you to support their businesses. Some of the local politicians wanted to mark this milestone celebration and their proclamations have been included.

Borrowing a phrase from Abraham Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg Address but applying it to our celebration: we have a program of the community, by the community, and for the community. Over this weekend you will come to understand and appreciate what we mean. Let’s have a wonderful celebration!!!

CONGRATULATIONS to the Alumni Award Recipients

Dr. Dundon became inspired to achieve an impactful level of service during his general practice residency at the Cleveland VA by his mentors. A few his mentors were prior military service veterans and that encouraged him to pursue his rightful and distinguished path.

The Army has shaped his career by teaching leadership skills and selfless service through extensive military based officer education and dental education. Working at the VA as staff dentist, supervisor, general practice residency director and finally as service chief created an emphasis on community service and giving back to one’s country. For Dr. Dundon, the Army also gave him the opportunity to deliver healthcare in the Middle East, Central America, Western Europe, as well as Northern Alaska on various military deployments and humanitarian healthcare missions. While serving, his unit built dental clinics and provided dental care to thousands of uniformed service members, civilians, coalition forces, and contractors in five different locations in Iraq from Baghdad to Mosul. Considering this, Dr. Thomas Dundon was awarded the

U.S. Army Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. He was also recognized by the Red Cross and awarded the Greater Cleveland Red Cross Hero Award in 2016 for his many military and humanitarian accomplishments.

To date he is most proud of his military service and service to veterans, working with and educating residents, and having the opportunity to return to CWRU School of Dental Medicine and teach students for the last 15 years. Currently, he is working on integrating CAD-CAM into his VA dental service, Increasing dental access for Veterans, and treatment synchronization between active duty and Department of Veterans Affairs. When asked if he had the opportunity to change his path would he, his answer was simply, “I would not change a thing.” He remains eternally grateful to the CWRU School of Dental Medicine for initiating his career path. Dr. Thomas Dundon has offered significant contributions. He exemplifies all the qualities of service, leadership, family, and integrity to which we all aspire.

2017 DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS OF THE YEAR Colonel Thomas Dundon, DMD ’86

As a U.S. Army Colonel and the Chief of the Dental Service at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, he has been an Army Reserve Officer for the last 25 years with 12 consecutive years as a commander of two different Army units. He is currently Commander of the 912th Dental Company. “Dr. Dundon’s selfless service to our country, his soldiers, veterans, reservists, to the many people he has positively affected and

treated throughout the world, and to the many students he has taught over 15 years as a CWRU clinical instructor (Basic Procedures Fixed Prosthodontics), makes him a most worthy

‘Distinguished Alumnus of the Year’ for CWRU’s 125th anniversary,” said Dr. Stephen Atkins.

2017 OUTSTANDING NEW DENTIST AWARDAlex Mellion, DDS ‘11

Dr. Mellion was a graduate from the Class of 2011. From the very beginning of his journey he was highly engaged and active in volunteer work and student advocacy. Kari Cunningham, DMD stated that “Dr. Mellion practices servant leadership and is a great representation of the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine.”

His passion and involvement stemmed from growing up in a dental family where he was heavily influenced by his father showcasing a passion for his career and enjoying

involvement in organized dentistry.

CONGRATULATIONS to the Alumni Award Recipients

During his career, Dr. Stein developed the foundation for the graduate training program in oral and maxillofacial surgery and the division in the Department of Surgery at UH. This entailed three components, which were: establishing an oral and maxillofacial surgery service at University Hospitals, as the service was nonexistent, developing the residency program to provide advance education to trainees, and an administrative component which entailed establishing good working relationships with Medical and administrative staff within the hospital. Dr. Stein is extremely proud of this accomplishment and mentions, “At the end of my 17-year tenure as director of the division at UH, the scope of services provided was considerably expanded and the foundation for the service was firmly established. The base was provided from which greater expansion and growth occurred under the direction of subsequent directors.” The program is now one of the most sought after training programs in its field.

Dr. Stein is most certain that his greatest career highlights have been his academic role, his role at University Hospitals and serving as a volunteer on a long list of health related associations and organizations, including serving as president of the Ohio Division of the American Cancer Society and serving on the National Board of the American Society for twenty-one years. He enjoyed most serving as chairman of the Oral Surgery department at the school, working with students and residents and serving as Associate Dean and Interim Dean.

Currently Dr. Stein is not engaged in any professional activity. In his long and successful career, he believes he contributed all that he wanted to the dental profession and is quite satisfied with his achievements.

2017 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION SPECIAL RECOGNITION AWARD Murray Stein, DDS, MSc

Dr. Murray Stein, mentored by Dr. Paul Boyle during his fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania, quickly discovered that his passion for dentistry could be attributed to the wonderful service it provided to patients and the variety of career opportunities it provided. He mentions that it was Dr. Paul Boyle, who was an oral pathologist at

the University of Pennsylvania and later Dean of Case Western Reserve School of Dental Medicine, who inspired him to facilitate such an impactful level of service and his

connection to CWRU.

His involvement in organized dentistry began as the Dental school’s ASDA chapter President and as a national ASDA trustee. At Case Western Reserve, he was also active with the student alumni board and the Leadership Development Committee. All of these roles contributed to his passion for leadership positions within organized dentistry. He currently serves on committees of the Akron Dental Society and Ohio Dental Association and is the current chair of the ODA’s subcouncil to the new dentist.

Dr. Mellion is driven by his professional affiliations. His Doctoral memberships include the Cleveland Society of Orthodontics, the Ohio Dental Political Action Committee and a board position on the Saint Louis University Orthodontic Education and Research Foundation. For Alex there is a major importance behind organized dentistry and the future of the profession. He believes membership and involvement in organized dentistry allows dentists to control their future by maintaining their professional autonomy. Alex maintains his involvement

to control how he wants to practice and recognizes that membership and involvement give dentists a combined voice to impact their profession to better serve their patients.

He recently began his fourth year as a volunteer Assistant Clinical Professor in the Orthodontic department at Case Western Reserve which gives him an opportunity to be involved in academics and give back. His role as volunteer faculty gives him an opportunity to affect change and impact the residents’ learning experience. This position also keeps him current with new and different techniques in the profession.

He feels fortunate to practice with his father Joseph Mellion ’78 and brother Zachary Mellion ’04 who have majorly influenced his career. He and his wife Emily, a 2015 graduate of the school’s Pediatric Dentistry program, recently welcomed their first child on September 5th of this year and they are looking forward to the excitement and rewarding challenge parenthood will bring.

THE SCHOOL The School of Dental Medicine was organized on June 21, 1892, as the Dental Department of Western Reserve University, and opened that September with 21 students. For the first 25 years of its existence, the school was located in downtown Cleveland, on East Ninth Street and St. Clair.

In 1917, the School of Dental Medicine became an integral part of the university, with a building on Adelbert Road.

In 1969, it moved into a building adjacent to the School of Medicine, the School of Nursing, and University Hospitals of Cleveland as part of a large University expansion project. This move made it one of the most complete and modern educational and research units in the country, with space for 368 DDS students, 70 graduate students, and 250 patient chairs. In 2003, the name of the school officially changed from the School of Dentistry to the School of Dental Medicine, and the degree offered changed from Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) to Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Since its organization, it has conferred degrees on over 6,000 graduates and currently there are approximately 4,700 living alumni.
